This was a fun thought experiment. I think you’d enjoy the book “Seven Eves” for many many reasons.
Hey Destin! Pretty cool to catch you over here on Corridor Crew!
An extremely fun book with one heck of an acid trip for a third act.
This is proof destin has been using cgi and all his experiments are fake! Lol just kidding
Yes! Another book that popped into my head was "The Three Body Problem" by the Chinese writer Liu Cixin. Also very interesting and fun to think about!
Destin! It would be awesome to see a cross over with you and Wren!
I legitimately want you guys to try to pitch this movie idea to Universal Studios.
And get Roland Emmerich on it!
And the universal logo in the start would flow straight into the movie.
@@MonthTea that would actually be really cool, similar to how columbia studios sometimes does their intros.
Just gave me an idea
@@MonthTea that would be neat
I can say with certainty that the Universal Logo that was introduced about 25 years ago or so was made of Solid Brass - about 1.25 inches thick. I made them for the design studio that was commissioned to create the new Universal opening. I used a company that had a Wire EDM machine (Electro Discharge Machining) to cut the letters into separate pieces. It was shot with a motor control camera system that "flew" the letters in one by one , with the proper offset to give the proper spacing for the letters. I would assume that the letters are now on some execs office at Universal . . they were each very heavy !
cool
So it would be a lot lighter in total, but if it ends up melting, doesn't brass give off toxic fumes when it melts? I wonder what impact that would have.
I'm gonna assume you're talking about the 1990 logo that was a complex rig before they switched to CGI.
There's a fun story about the opening titles for Waterworld. The concept in those titles is that the Universal logo appears as normal, then the Universal text fades out and the camera starts descending towards Earth while the oceans flood the continents. The VFX company hired to do the opening titles, PSF, assumed that the then current Universal logo (mid-90s) had been done with CGI and asked for the assets to be sent over. They did get the assets sent over - a 4-foot globe encased in a wooden crate.
In the end they had to recreate the Earth and surrounding space elements from scratch, with the Universal text carefully rotoed and composited in from a scan of the existing optical title elements.
@@Zacabeb PSF: "Yup, 4ft box. Takes up a lot of (1995) harddisks". 🤣
The Solid Brass Logo that I fabricated for the Universal Studios Logo, was for a company I believe called Studio Effects - they had also been part of the refresh for the Paramount Studios Movie Introduction . This was shot at a facility called the Chandler Stages located in the Marina Del Rey area of LA, where they had the large Motion Control Cameras System that shot the Letters as separate elements. If there was any CGI it would have been in the very early days of Digital Compositing - but that was in post production which I had no involvement.
so the logo was ACTUALLY made of metal?
FINALLY FIXED!!!! CZcams Editor glitched out and this video was unlisted for a bit. It's all back and fixed now, thanks for being patient. Enjoy the show!
I was wondering what had happened. I just started watching it and everything was out of sync.

Love how Wren managed to turn this insane world ending scenario into something wholesome at the end

This is a question I’ve never asked, but I in fact never knew I needed the answer to. Thank you Wren for reporting only the highest of intellectual questions!
Exactly!
I know right man
Dude right? This was awesome to think about. Especially when he went into the fact another object would be in space looking back at us; this was running through my head as soon as we got started - especially since that's how our moon was formed.

I think this is one of the best vids you guys have done. That was so interesting I want more!
I appreciate how you clipped the movie Another Earth in this video! It's always cool to see perhaps lesser known stuff getting some attention!
Wren is genuinely the greatest asset Corridor has. Seems like he constantly has ideas for interesting videos and they all convey his vision and the points of the videos perfectly.
Wren was one of their first hires way back and has always been a great addition to the team.
Ya go wren!!

Depending on how fast the logo would rotate, people could more efficiently tell the time by looking up into the sky and seeing where the logo is located and what letters are visible.

Plz do more of these ‘what if’ scenarios.. love it and truly educational … maybe a new colab channel on the horizon?
dope.
Since Universal is a movie company, I think the letters should be made as if they are props. My assumption is they would be wood with the minimal amount of internal structure. Gathering enough wood to make that would cause its own set of massive ecological issues.
@@JJBrothers2admig Since Universal needs to save money, the letters are hollow, covered only with a metal foil that is a few atoms thick.
What if other movie studios should the same thing of doing it in real life
I think plastic
The real damage is the deforestations we've made along the way.
If that were the case, the letters would plummet to Earth causing a extinction level event due to the gravitational pull of the Earth.
Honestly these type of vids with wren are my fav besides the super og vlogs
I was skeptical clicking this but you nailed it! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Absolutely! Someone should ask it in "What If?"

Undeniable proof that the world is round. How else would the universal logo go around the world?
It could rotate around the disc perpendicularly.

Your videos are so good that I'm prepared to watch them even when the audio is completely out of sync 😂😂
My god, I thought I was the only one having this out of sync audio issue since I couldn't find any comments about it 😂

"I'm an Astrophysicist. I'm not a rocket scientist, I just play one on the internet." 😁😁
Seeing Scott Manley was a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
Manley is the man. Perfect colab for this video. GG
I know your scenario was using some magic force to keep the logo (generally) in place, but it would be fun to see it play out all the way. The logo is well within the Roche limit so it would be ripped apart and rain down on Earth, but as it did, it would also fall closer to Earth and have greater gravitational impact as the center of the letters mass descended. There would be a point where the remnants of the letters would have greater local gravitational pull than the Earth from the surface of Earth, though it would probably be VERY brief. Of course, that one's not so easy of a calculation. You might have to get Scott to take over the spreadsheet at that point.
The moment I saw Wren starting with the calculations I thought "Probably Scott will have something to say about it" and then... BAM! Scott helping Wren with the numbers.
is anybody else experiencing some wild desync on this video? the sound feels like it's 10 seconds behind what's happening on screen
This was freaking awesome Ren!!!

The amount of study and passion Wren puts in these videos is amazing. Love it.
“You might be safe in a submarine, but you won’t be safe for long” didn’t age too well
Always, Good job Wren
Seeing you together with Scott Manley in both of your videos really made one of the best cross over experiences for me I ever had ❤
There's an additional factor you didn't consider in your renderings. The letters are well within the "Roche limit" of the earth for their masses meaning not just are things on the earth being dragged up into the sky, but the letters are being torn apart by the differential strength of gravity between the near face and far faces of each letter. This would cause molten metal to stream off of the letters into lower orbits, quickly forming an accretion disk around the earth. It isn't just "splashes" of metal from collisions between the letters that will be raining but an entire accretion disk.
yeah they wouldn't form a moon, they would form an unstable ring.
13:25 he did explained why they wouldnt break forming a ring
I did actually! I calculated the Roche limit for every letter. Because that equation is density based, and because the density ratio we’re dealing with is so extreme, the Roche limit wasn’t actually ever reached! So the letters wouldn’t have turned into an accretion disk! I was a little surprised, as I had plans to make a big shiny disk around earth, and even calculated the diameter at various thicknesses.
But in the end it didn’t really feel necessary for this video because by the time the Roche limit was reached, the earth was already melting. And it would’ve been the earth that started breaking up, not the platinum. Hence why I ended it with the double earth scenario.
-Wren
@@CorridorCrew Now it makes me wonder about those other letters floating in space the begin with "It is a period of civil war..."
@@CorridorCrew the 'double earth' surprised me.
I figured the two spheres would just combine and Earth after it cooled in probably a million years would have a massive platinum core. I guess because the letters are in geosynchronous orbit they had enough momentum to keep separated? The atmosphere would have slowed them down a bit, especially since their own gravity would increase the drag, gravitational drag is a thing, momentum energy would transfer from one body to another.
I still applaud you on a very complex simulation.
This is normally given to supercomputers to figure out.
So excited by the surprise Scott Manley
The look on Wren's face when Nick ganks his sodawater is priceless!
The effect of the Universal Logo orbiting the Earth was shown in the intro to Waterworld (1995). It caused the polar ice caps to melt, flooding the entire planet.
But the nine letters in the 1995 Universal logo were smaller, thinner, and further from the planet. The calculations are made based on the current logo that has been used since 2012... Maybe they weren't so dangerous to the planet back then.
I think my CZcams is broken, the sound is off by like 6 seconds
Make a CZcams Sorts of the video with the Univeral Studio theme playing in the background. That would be fun to watch 😄
whenever you’re talking and i’m not looking, i just imagine Serial Designation N talking about this stuff
i like this
It would be nice to know how things would have turned out, if the logo was assumed to be hollow (which would be more realistic, if it were actually build).
Missed opportunity
No, the whole point was for things to escalate and get as crazy as possible
No known material could support a structure this big. It will be pulled apart by the earth's, the moon's and the sun's gravity while also collapsing under it's own. Debris rain down on earth as a less devastating but still a potentially civilisation ending meteor shower. The end.
@@icevlad148uhh it doesnt have to be supported magic exists

Also op asked for a "realistic" take on the idea, so i pumped out something more or less realistic.
Just because I love Wrens personality, I will always watch one of his videos. No matter the subject; he’s just so damn entertaining.
6:10 another way you could have looked at determining the composition of the letters is one: look at the sheen of the letters and match that level of sheen 2) the overall color. obviously these letters are shaped. therefore a melting and smithing process occurred. what metals behave like that after being smelted. 3) what metal in the universe is plentiful enough to do this? iron.
I liked the part where you mentioned that the equator was due south of LA. Yeah, that’s how the entire northern hemisphere works, actually. AND the equater is also SW, SE, SSW, SSE, etc of LA.

Would be fun to make a movie that starts with the universal logo as usual but the earth in the back reacts correctly and goes all kinds of crazy and then it slowly zooms in to focus on a certain spot with protagonists. Would be a cool oner (single camera take, no cuts).

What a fascinating thought experiment. I've always had a deep appreciation of movie studio logos in how they are the very few animated company logos (as in in motion, not just CGI type of animation). Also, being how many studios are over a century old, it's a great time capsule seeing how their logos evolved over that time.
