I kept wondering when she would do that because it was said that Elizabeth changed her voice. I think she’s doing so well with this role, I can’t imagine another actress doing better. I’m no expert but I’m really impressed with her performance. She will never get type cast as a dumb blond type with this serious role. Just fooling around I tried to deepen my voice the last few days like her but couldn’t. However I have acid reflux on my vocal chords so if I yell at anyone, like my cat, I’m in pain. So I did develop a slightly deeper more authoritative tone so it doesn’t hurt.
I didn't think she resembled Elizabeth Holmes at all.

As a scientist this series was amazing and completely baffling. In the U.K. we have biomedical scientists who troubleshoot these machines using quality controls and and check validity of results before they are ever released to clinicians or patients. How they ever bought into the idea that this could go into retail without a medical professional overseeing results being released is crazy to me, and don’t even get me started on the technology. The scene in the dropout where Sunny doesn’t understand how a Siemens works and their little box doesn’t is so very telling that Elizabeth didn’t even understand the fundamentals of the science behind what goes on in the analysers and why they need to be so big. The public and investors were so blindly gullible
Throughout the Hulu series and in reality, anybody who questioned Elizabeth and Sunni were either isolated within the company or fired. Questions from external interests were met with ambiguous answers without proper follow up questions. From the series and everything I've read, Elizabeth was very deliberate on how she worded a question.
This is America. People out here are crazy. I find it incredible that she never explained exactly how this Edison box worked. Thats like saying you have a car that can travel faster than the speed of sound. Crazy if she had found a new way to run complex lab tests why did she not publish? She could have patented her design. Why did she say it was a secret? I find it amazing that the people invested did not question this. Well I guess Americans are all idiots.
They bought into it because they wanted to sleep with her. If she was old, fat and ugly ya think they’d shell out those kind of bucks? I think not.

One of the whistle blowers mentions in one of the documentaries that seeing the eyes before everything came to light was different to now. Before he spoke the eyes were one of the things that convinced him to drink the koolaid for a time.

I used to look at the others who were given it all the way you described. ROFL what you learn when you get old like me is most of the rich kids given everything don’t end up doing shit. So much of it is just a sponsored project by their parents etc.
I’m setting my kids up so they’ll never struggle like me but they’ll never have access to cash like the ruined rich kids have. I created generational wealth but now I need it to not fuck up my kids. Money makes people worthless.

I thought she and Sunny were bad to their employees but if you read the book Bad Blood it describes just how beyond horrid they treated their employees. It’s got to be the most Toxic work environment I have ever read in a book. And these employees weren’t even just your average work in an office employees. The majority of her employees were graduates from Ivy League schools, and had previous experience working in really well known companies and labs like NASA and Labcorp. They both deserve jail time and restitution not just to her investors but the employees that she threatened and in some cases destroyed their lives.
Yeah.... It was bad. There are other companies that function as a cult as well.

Elizabeth Holmes should have gone into MARKETING! The way she can talk things up and convince people... She could have made a legitimate fortune in the line of work.
But wasn't that basically... what she was doing?
I guess the major difference is people in marketing may not have all the information, and may also be seen to be innocent of culpability if things go wrong. But otherwise... she was marketing herself as inspiring, and an idea as possible. In that order.

That's what I thought, maybe she was a bit overly optimistic and truly believed her machine could work, in theory time travel is also possible but when you set out to do it it's not so simple. When she started the company she was too young, at 19 you can believe in fairy tales but later she caught on but still kept going in deeper and deeper because she did not want to admit to people and lose the fame and fortune and credibility she had received, even if it put millions of lives at risk.
People would think of her as a joke and no one would want to o vest with her ever again is probably what she thought, so she kept buying more time hoping her scientists and engineers will catch up and she wouldn't have to give up all her credibility, money and fame. Until she couldn't anymore.

AS someone who studied and worked with body fluids, it's basic knowledge, among medical professionals, that blood drawn from using a needle (venous blood) and blood drawn by just pricking a finger (capillary) or even a regular wound, have very different components. Did she even talk to lab scientist or a doctor?? Nope, she talked to a bunch of engineers, and rich men with high ego. Now, that's what I call "smart", but not too smart to convince medical experts😉😉
Exactly! As an actual hospital laboratory scientist doing these tests on a day to day basis, it astounded me that the company even managed to stay afloat for that long and even attract investors. The basic principles of blood and the analysers made no sense

Having not known the story prior to seeing Dropout, I couldn’t figure Amanda out, the voice changes I thought was bad acting. But when I researched Elizabeth after, I realized how DEAD ON Amanda played her.

The genius part about what she did was find individuals who believed her, who had no idea what she was talking about because they were investors not scientists, when she did approach people who had an inkling that she was sketchy they questioned her and she moved on from them. Classic con artist, who was disguised by her family’s former wealth.

Her husband is like that guy in the episode of House who finds out that his wife has traits of a sociopath. She showed no remorse or guilt for anything she was accused of doing. It's almost impossible to tell what a sociopath is thinking.
At a certain point I think Holmes’ bizarre obsession with becoming Steve Jobs took over. In her mind, nothing else mattered. What brought her down was that Theranos was running out of cash towards the end, and to keep the scam afloat they had to sign a deal with Walmart and use the bogus machine on real patients.

Amanda Seyfried was absolutely the perfect choice to portray Elizabeth, just the side by side of the interview with the rapid fire questions is what peaked my interest because of how eerily similar Amanda could make her voice sound like Elizabeth's "voice"

Amanda is knocking it out of the ball park with her portrayal of EH.
Her and her crazy boyfriend knew exactly what they were doing. They could’ve caused severe damage to people that really relied on their testing. Though her idea was fantastic, how did no one realize that it wasn’t working?
This story fascinates me, I have watched and researched several docs, and Elizabeth and her company leaders were extremely threatening to any employees that questioned the what why and how. Plus Theranos covered up the failures and lied about anything that looked bad.
I don't think the idea is impossible but just a small amount of blood really?
highly recommend watching the doc on hulu. Pretty much anyone who tried to dispute her or the tech, she quickly discredited or got rid of them. Pressure from investors, retailers made her lie even more. A domino effect if you ask me

I never believe in her idea. Firstly, if you've ever had blood test you know if they're testing for a variety of issues or diseases many vials are required. The fact that this was going to be down to one drop of blood that quickly made no sense.

With so much science fiction nowdays and people praising technology and tech idols a lot of people would fall for the "one drop of blood test", if the idea was pitched to me i would personally say "is interesting" but i dont think i would say "this is BS" since the very first moment, later of course after i asked for second opinions or read on the subject.
People need to understand the context of the 2000s and 2010s too, people wanted to jump on the Mark Zukerberg bandwagon, tech companies were being created left and right with kids fresh out of college getting billions of dollars for their tech products (youtube being bough by google, whatsapp being bought by facebook, etc...). A lot of people hate Facebook nowdays but back when it was created almost everyone wanted to be part of it.
Look at the makeup of the Theranos board. Most of them were old, rich, established white men without a scientific background living out a fantasy with EH as the head of their club.
If there was one women on the board, I think EH would've been called out for details about the Edison and there would be no book or TV show.

Just look at how easy a but of strategic gaslighting sways public opinion. Elizabeth however wasn't dealing with the general public, but instead used similar strategy to persuade men of influence. Being a blonde, fairly attractive female with a unique ability to lie without blinking enabled her to reach deeper and deeper into the pockets of investors.
She pulled the get pregnant/become a mom move to soften the jury’s heart for a softer punishment.
Damn...imagine that child was born simply to cushion the blow of the trial. Wonder if she is so messed up she doesn't even really care for the child. Does she even have maternal instincts?
Or she realized that she facing 20 years in prison, meaning once she got out she's be almost 60, and thus too old to have a baby. She probably decided this might be her only chance to become a mother. I'd do the same thing if I was risking the prospect of perhaps never becoming a parent.

Suddenly her actions are not out of selfishness?
These people are highly smart and tactful, and they do not have the same 'emotional hang-ups' or virtue shackles of the everyday person. Having a child for practical selfish means is as old as social gathering. Plenty of Mother have had kids the same way others would buy the latest iPhone...because other people are doing it and you don't want to feel left out. The child is simply an accessory, a fashion statement, or a bullet proof vest from judgement.

No see, this is where you are wrong. Elizabeth was the “idea machine” who hired the qualified personnel to create her idea. All of that money went into trying to create the product she dreamt up. Still, yes, ur right, ahole rich ppl doing dumb shizz. But, this is what rich ppl do. They hire a team to create their idea so eventually it builds and builds into so,etching else entirely. It creates its own monster. Regardless, she didn’t need to have a degree when she was able to hire ppl to create it. Obviously she build such a big mote around her so no one would find out she had no clue of the science behind it.
It was actually a great idea. If she had just been honest about the limitations of the device, I think things could have gone alot better for her.

I agree. However, the reason it 'sucked at what it did' was because she/ Theranos wasn't honest about what it could do. It could have been a great device that tested a few dozen disorders, instead of over 200 or however many they claimed.

It really wasn't. I wish it were that simple. Some lab test need just the serum out of whole blood as red blood cells and plasma interfere with the reaction that's being tested, some tests just need plasma and others just red blood cells. To get those different blood products out of whole blood it requires a centrifuge. After that you need reagents to run the tests in the right amount and temp controlled incubation for the reaction to occur. You'll also need a reader for the test and waste portion of the reaction. Also, sometimes peoples' whole blood is not easily separated into the right portions from whole blood and require either special testing, more sample or need to be diluted out. Like the video says she had no lab scientist on the board because she knew it was sketchy.
The idea was great to con investors but EH ignored the science. That's why she evaded scientists and the FDA like the plague.
For investors, this should be a lesson on how not to invest in a company with bad science, a single drop of blood would be ideal for measuring blood sugar, not enough for everything else.

Holmes was part of a generation that, when asked what they wanted to be when they grew up answered "rich and famous". She just wanted to be "great", she didn't care how. And to be a good liar, you have to kind of convince yourself the lies are true. She was more of a product than an entrepreneur. Sadly I think a lot of people look at this story trying to understand how to do the same thing but not get caught.

Did she though? My boss has Narcissistic Personality Disorder and its opened my eyes to the depths of wickedness that a person can have. The limitless energy that some people can put into creating an illusion for their ego and their wealth. The uncaring nature of the damage they inflict on others to achieve their goals. I can never believe that someone wants to improve the world based solely on their statement that they want to improve the world.

It is SO good. Seyfied is spectacular. Its dramatic, funny, awkward, infuriating, and so freaking WATCHABLE.
I followed this story for years. Could not wait for that trial. Am thrilled with the verdict but the best is yet to come. Watch her baby blues try to charm up the judge at sentencing, and use the baby she bred to avoid jail in front of him. The big drama is coming to the sentencing show

Imagine finding out your mother only had you as a prop to try to avoid jail. The child will be genuinely better off without her, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if she’s now desperately trying to get pregnant again, to avoid the correct consequence for her irresponsible and arrogant behaviour.
I hope she gets the maximum amount of prison time.
Is it normal to schedule the sentencing hearing so far in advance? I just found out it’s not until September. Apparently she’s free on bond. I wouldn’t put it past her to try and escape before the sentence hearing and I can see her possibly succeeding. Where do white collar criminals go to hide? Is it somewhere in South America?
If you've ever had a finger stick, you'll know how incredibly painful it is compared to a regular blood draw. Anyone who is fooled by Holmes' delusion is just a head shaker.
This is what confuses me so much. I was so adverse to finger pricks as a kid. I understand some people don’t have accessible veins… but I think most people do?

Elizabeth Holmes missed her calling. She should have written a book called "How to speak without saying anything"
Even if people think you're absolutely BRILLIANT, DO NOT drop out of college when you only have a few classes left.. not because college isn't a scam (it is often), but mainly in case you need a back-up if your "plan" fails. You can always go back of course (or you can go later), but when you've spent four years of your life working on a degree it is worth seeing it all the way through. I didn't have stellar grades in college and I contemplated dropping out, but I'm glad I finished because when I found what I was passionate about even with my not great grades in undergrad I was able to continue to pursue it because I "ticked" that box.. College isn't for everyone of course, but if you've spent so much time working towards something and are all the way done, it's worth finishing it

It took until I saw the typography of the series title that "DROPout" also refers to a DROP of blood.
I just finished watching the show with my mother, and we both loved it!
If they had bothered to ask any biomedical science or medical experts, even a student from that field, they would not be in this mess. Anyone from those two fields would have answered that her idea of using 1 or 2 drops of finger prick blood to do 100s or 1000s of test is impossible. Basic knowledge of physiology and logic will tell you it is impossible. So I don't feel sorry for the investors, they did not do any due diligence and have only themselves to blame.
When this girl started her company @ 19 years old, I was 22 years old. I had never heard of her until literally yesterday (when I found out about the Hulu show). So while her story is somewhat fascinating, what's even more interesting is that she was apparently well-known for almost 20 years now and I somehow missed it. 😅
Same, only heard about her when the trailer for The Dropout came out and I'm in the medical field! (Not in America though).
I live in the Silicon Valley and didn't know about her until about three years ago.

Binge-watched the first 7 episodes in one night. Look forward to seeing Episode 8 tonight! Holmes should really get the maximum sentence - hope her baby's father is a quality human being in case he's left to raise the child on his own. It's sad how someone has absolutely no conscience to do the right and humane thing! One day we all will answer for our choices!

I've watched the first season and the actress has her down to a tea great acting and quite a good story I know of miss holmes and this was not always factual but it is very entertning

Amanda Seyfried hit a homerun. I was thinking she could not be that good playing EH - DAMn, she was way way better than I could imagine anyone. I hope she gets the career boost she deserves.

Whoever told her that deepening her voice was good, is a fool.
She sounds scary and silly.
I think she kind of did that on her own accord, nobody told her to do it.
I wonder if the voice actually did help her, by making her seem more masculine and intimidating so people would question her less.
If you read. It's not proven or anything that she actually changed her voice. Her parent have sworn she has always had a deep voice. And perception (people's memory) is way too inaccurate to be "proof".

@@kaylaclark4459 maybe it was just the audio, but I've watched a couple other videos of her speaking years ago and her voice was much higher in each of the different clips. One of her professors said she was "shocked" upon hearing the change in her voice in a matter of months.

Hollywood cant never get enough of glorifying frauds & Psychos. What a revolutionary she is, that she actually deserves her own movie.
It's really interesting to me how narratives can be coloured. Consider the "she talked her way into Stanford's Mandarin program" bit. In a vacuum, without knowing where this story was going, one might be confused by the tone: Why cast a high school student as a manipulative villain for seizing an opportunity to persuade --- without malice or dishonesty --- a university to accept her on her proven merits? And yet, somehow, knowing the path she walks later in life, doing so comes naturally.
You should read the book by John Carreyrou "Bad Blood". You won't be able to put it down. It will also explain why she was "Driven" as she was.

Wacthing the first episode now! I love Amanda Seyfried. She is an awesome actress and she is so pretty! She is doing a great job imo. She gives a little bit of the voice in certain inflections before she changed it so that it wasn't as much of a shocking distracting change imo. I thought it was a mistake at first but then I realized I was trying to find Amanda's natural voice not the character of Elizabeth's natural voice. Which now I think was a genius choice. 👍 Really good so far!!!
I have followed this story in book form, podcast and Dropout. Series brought to life these greedy characters.

I followed this for years but haven’t watched the series yet. It’s on Netflix now as well. I think her delivery as a person commands so much attention it negates the actual bull she’s telling or not telling. Evading the truth. She would have made a better politician and maybe avoided a court case.

This story is all about ego. Elizabeth's ego to not recognize her idea was just not realisable. Investor's ego to deny obvious facts and being tricked by a young woman, and the ego of the former neighbor to have not being asked for advises. But the worst for me, is that she has been recognised guilty for frauds and lying to investors. Nothing about jeopardise people health.
