@@TheHilltopPillbox Out of curiosity, I was thinking of picking up AA:Anniversary but after watching this I'm trying to decide whether I'd like AA:1940 Europe better (and maybe get Pacific as well). My thinking is that with 1940 you get the figures for the minor countries too, right? This would play well into potentially expanding into Global War 1939-1945 as I'd have most of the units I'd need (I'm also waiting to see what the GW 3rd edition map looks like). Are there any stand out differences between AA 1940 and AA Anniversary? I know 1940 has more countries represented and some new unit types...but what about research? Are the airbases and ports actually in the game or is that something you've modded into it? My hesitation with getting the Anniversary edition is that I've got the original AA classic, so they are somewhat similar - whereas 1940 has a more detailed map, units, etc. I plan to play this with my wife and daughter, so the additional complexity of 1940 might be an issue. Ahhhhhh...
I'm also considering getting Unconditional Surrender for something a bit different (and solitaire) - have you ever played that?
Anyhow, thanks again for the entertaining battle reports. The accents are hilarious... :)

@@Digitalfiendscom Thanks for watching and commenting! I have not played Unconditional Surrender, unless you're referring to when I finally give in to my wife and get around to cleaning the garage.
You do have a bit of a conundrum there. I will try to clear up some of the issues for you, and then you'll have a better idea as to what you need at this time.
I'll begin with the rules sets for each by simply saying this: there are a number of differences between the two! For more information on that, here's a link: www.axisandallies.org/forums/topic/29122/1940-global-and-anniversary-differences
(Even in that link there are other links to more discussions...)
Anniversary is less arduous, and a much better introductory game for newcomers.
Anniversary comes in one box, whereas G40 comes in two, and is much more costly.
Anniversary takes a fraction of the time to set up, learn, and play.
Anniversary is a smaller board, so you require less space, albeit, not much.
G40 is a much more involved game simply due to more playable countries. Anniversary has six playable powers, while G40 has eight (nine, if you include France).
Both Anniversary and 40 Editions give you units for the playable powers only - nothing for the neutrals or pro-Allied/Axis nations. G40 has more playable powers, though.
Air bases and Naval bases are in each game, and if you ever get a map download to send to a printer, they are typically printed right on the map. The OOB versions have little cardboard chits to place.
Regarding your hesitation with Anniversary being too much like the Classic, I wouldn't worry about that. They are very different in many respects.
If you are wanting to introduce your wife and daughter to the game, I personally recommend Anniversary, mainly because of the faster pace and fewer powers to play. The wait times in G40 can become quite long, and new players tend to drift off...
So, in a nutshell: Cost, Time, Area, Complexity, Playable Nations, Rules - all more intensive with G40. Not a bad thing, but it doesn't suit everyone.
I have tried to give you fact and not opinion here, so you can choose what's best for your situation. If I have the time and players, I prefer G40, but if I am introducing newcomers, or if I only have 4-5 hours, I use Anniversary.
I hope that helps a bit!

@@TheHilltopPillbox Wow, thank you for that very comprehensive response. My daughter currently plays Star Wars Armada and Legion with me, so complexity is not really a huge issue, but the time factor might be a problem. I'd definitely prefer a slightly more complex game. Thanks for the link discussing the differences between the products; I'm going to check that out now. :)

My favorite power of the allies is by far Russia. I really don't understand why the Russian player in this game pulled pack from Ukraine. To me, Ukraine, Rostov, and Novogrod are vital strategy territories to hold when Barbarossa starts.

In this situation, they just would have been smashed sooner, as Germany had a very strong presence on both flanks. Russia tried to trade space for time, but the US spent too much energy on the Pacific, giving Germany free rein in Europe.
