How to use Toner

- In this video, I'll be demonstrating how to use toner. It's important to note that there are two major categories of toners, but the application method I'll show you can be effectively applied to both.
Hydrating toners can be beneficial for your skin as they help to restore its natural balance and moisture levels. These toners typically contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or glycerin, which can attract and retain water molecules, thereby hydrating the skin. Applying a hydrating toner after cleansing leaves your skin feeling soft and plump and can also enhance the absorption and effectiveness of the products applied afterward. These toners can be used daily, both in the morning and evening.
On the other hand, exfoliating acid toners can help to improve the texture and appearance of your skin. They usually contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or polyhydroxy acids (PHAs). These chemical exfoliants help to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and brighten the complexion. Regular use of an exfoliating acid toner can lead to smoother, more radiant skin with a reduced appearance of pores, blemishes, and fine lines. However, it's crucial to use these products cautiously, as overuse can potentially cause skin irritation. Therefore, start by using them every other day in your evening skincare routine and then gradually increase the frequency to daily usage, as needed and tolerated.
The general order of application for a complete skincare routine is:
Cleanser
Toner
Essence
Serum
Moisturizer
Sunscreen (during daytime)

I just use rose water for basically as many things as possible. Toner, light hydration, on my hair to prevent frizz, you can even add it as a flavoring if you get the right type of extract.
You’re my fav youtuber ever since I started my skin care ❤
That's helpful, thanks:)
Glad to hear that! 😀
I really like your videos ♥️ thank you a lot for sharing it ❤
Thanks, my mom gave me her toner and I didn’t know how to use it
@ MELLISA
I don’t use a cotton pad when applying toner. I just use my hands but I’m not sure how much I should be applying. I have tried completely wetting my whole face in toner. Is this too much? Is there any bad from using too much toner?
I demonstrated both methods in this short, so I recommend watching it ;)
@LeonorIsabel im not sure what toner she used but I think that you wanted a hydrating toner so here
❤
So after wash face, you dry it to apply toner? Do you wait till the toner is absorbed before putting cream on?
Correct. Yes, let each product absorb into the skin before moving onto the next step :)
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial how long should we wait?
I tried using the ordinary glycolic acid toner and glycolic acid toner from Boots pharmacy but they both would cause bumpy skin on my face and neck after one time use. Is this normal that it indicates my skin is ‘ purging ‘ or should i stop? Also the cleanser i use the foaming cleanser from Cerave i have oily skin
Well, it's hard to say after just one use, but it is not uncommon for glycolic acid formulations to have that effect. Personally, I also experience a similar reaction when I use glycolic acid products too frequently. As a result, I generally avoid using them regularly and reserve them for demonstrations. The cleanser you are using is alright, although glycolic acid is typically intended for dry skin, while salicylic acid is often recommended for oily skin.
Thank you and also i have a question. whenever i do my skin care i always cleanse, then moisturize. now that i added toner to this routine, how long do i wait after using toner until i use moisturizer?
If you have an exfoliating acid toner, such as an AHA, BHA, or PHA, I would give it a couple of minutes before applying moisturizer. For hydrating toners, just give it 30 seconds.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial thank you!!
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial do we wash of toner before moisturizer?
@@aianansofie Technically, no. Practically, it may depend on the toner you have and what you want to do. 😉
Hi, after using toner I used sunscreen and I got some rashes on my face .What should I do
Hey! 😊
What cleanser, toner, and sunscreen do you use?
Are those all new products? How do you use them?
With the good molecules nianicinamide brightening toner when I rub it together it kind of foams up a tiny bit is that okay?
Yes, this can happen with any liquid skincare product, don't worry! :)
Can I just apply toner if I’m doing the caveman regimen..? help
Me out. Thanks
I have never heard about that. What is it about?
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial It’s when you just stop using skin care products. Maybe just rinsing your face with water here and there. I’m on day 18. My skin is clearing up a lot more!
@@crlitoh Ah, okay. I've never heard about that. It's considered normal here where I am, lol. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that it's working for you. It does depend, because if you don't clean your skin properly before using toner, it may cause clogged pores, especially in oilier areas.
so i can use toner everyday? thank you for the video!❤
Hydrating toner, yes. For an exfoliating acid toner, it depends on the formulation and the acids used, such as AHA (like glycolic acid) or BHA (like salicylic acid), and your personal skin tolerance. So, if it's low strength, it can work well, but mid to high strength will become too much at some point.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial thank you so much!
Should I use AHA BHA PHA toner daily? Or how many days a week? Can you suggest please
It depends on your overall skin tolerance. If that is the only acid you are using and you do not use any retinol or other strong active ingredients, then it can work. Essentially, you need to find the right frequency for your personal needs.
From what I’ve read, introduce acid gradually to your skin to avoid irritation. Maybe try it 3x a week and at night, and slowly increase the frequency as your skin gets used to the acid. Also, be careful in using AHA/BHA together with retinol since both are acids and could cause some side effects on your skin. Some suggests not to use them together, however if you really want to mix them together, use them at least 30 minutes apart.
Hi Melissa. I want to incorporate a toner in my routine, but don’t want any actives in it. My skincare is curated by my dermatologist, morning: cleanser, peptide eye serum by ordinary, clindamycin+niacinamide gel, moisturiser, sunscreen; night: balm cleanser, cleanser, adapalene+benzoyl peroxide cream, moisturiser. How should I fit in a toner here?
Hey! :) Well, the short should have helped you add toner to your skincare routine :)
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Sorry I didn’t frame my question properly. I meant, is it okay if I use toner with all these actives I use daily, especially adapalene and benzoyl peroxide? And what toner do you recommend?
@@amritamazumder2656As long as it's a hydrating toner and not an exfoliating acid toner, yes, you can use it along with all your active skincare products.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thanks❤️
Should i need to wash my face after applying toner? Im a beginner in face routine 😅
No, simply follow the demonstration! 😃 Additionally, if you're interested in using other products, this video provides a step-by-step guide that might be helpful: czcams.com/users/shortsRGqwdAuPOco
I have a question? I use the ordinary glycolic acid and I want to use the snail mucin essence after it but, I heard that u need to dampen ur skin before applying it so it can work, so should I dampen my skin after using the toner and use the essence or can I apply it on dry skin?
Sadly, that is misinformation, one that even some "doctors" are spreading, leading to a lot of sensitivities or layering issues. Your way of thinking is exactly why it happens. This situation is the perfect example of why damp skin is not the same as wet skin. 😠
Wet skin: This is skin that has a noticeable layer of water on it. You can see water droplets on the skin surface, and you can feel the water when you touch the skin.
Damp skin: This refers to skin that has been patted dry on the surface but retains moisture internally. There are no visible water drops on the skin surface. It's similar to a sponge or a piece of clothing that no longer drips water but remains moist to the touch.
So, you clean your face,
pat it dry with a towel (this means that it is still damp on the inside, and that is what you want),
then you apply glycolic acid,
wait 1-2 minutes,
apply snail mucin (to lock in the moisture that the skin already has absorbed before).
So, what I demonstrated in this video is actually damp skin.
I explained it here in another video:
"How to Apply Skincare on Damp Skin?"
czcams.com/video/xNUUUr81rLE/video.html
If you want to apply skincare to dry skin, as sometimes the dampness contributes to irritation when used with exfoliating acids or retinols, you do the following:
First, clean your face,
Then, pat it dry with a towel and wait 5-10 minutes,
Next, apply glycolic acid,
Wait 1-2 minutes,
Finally, apply snail mucin.
Since glycolic acid and snail mucin already contain water, they have everything they need to work properly.

Can we transfer our toner to a spray bottle? & then massage?
It depends on the toner. If it's a hydrating toner, usually there shouldn't be an issue. However, if it's an exfoliant, you need to avoid certain areas of the face, which can become very difficult if you spray it.
Why should you avoid the eyelids?
This mainly applies to exfoliating acid toners, as they can irritate such a thin and delicate area. With any toner, there is a risk of it getting into your eyes.
Can we use 2 toners at the same time
Yes, a hydrating and exfoliating acid toner, or alternatively, two hydrating toners. However, I would not recommend using two exfoliating acid toners simultaneously, as this can lead to serious irritation over time, depending on the strength of both.
How long should i leave it on my face?
For the entire day and/or night-depending on when you apply it.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial ok thx❀(*´▽`*)❀
can i put aloevera gel after?
yes
You dont have to yell 😂
Well, sometimes I do this. This behavior stems from my childhood, as my father was always very loud with my mother when I was younger 😞. Now, when I'm nervous or stressed, I tend to do that too.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial try to relax sometimes when you talk loud in your head you think you speak normally but others find it different
