Nobody could sing what lived in her heart better than Etta! Etta James, Janis Joplin, and Billie Holiday had more soul than any other women I’ve ever heard. There are other great voices, but nobody could declare the depth of soul like these. You have to live it to be able to sing from the heart like that. Praise the Lord for voices like this!

She is undoubtedly THE QUEEN of everything that is the blues. Tina Turner was bad too. But Etta is the one we all salute. I got a ride to Maryland when I was 14 years old to see her. When she stepped out of that limo I thought I was in the presence of a goddess! Just a fabulously gorgeous woman. Blues singers in those times often looked rough. She looked like milk and honey! And she was a sweet person to us too.

We don't need to sit back like we're on American Idol and compare legendary singers, just enjoy them and celebrate their talents.

I didn't know that Mick played slide. Great Jimmy Reed song. Check this song on "Rocks the House," where Etta makes her voice sound like a harp, and does an extended "harp" solo. You won't believe it.

Nina Simone who was very controversial to the power people never got her great position in the US Music world. BUT why not Etta? She was strictly Blues and she was all the other qualities they like in this country, light skin, shapely, pretty as a new born baby and can sing her ... off!

@DrAyaba Etta is fabulous no doubt about it, but the undisputed queen of the blues is Koko Taylor. She had a voice that could shatter bullet proof glass.
