Atomstack A5 Laser Engraver Review & Tutorial | Banggood Woodworking Tools Review
Banggood.com sent me this Atomstack A5 Laser Engraver to test and review. This is a great product for woodworker. One thing to note is, the advertisement says it's a 20W laser, but the actual output of the laser is 5W, therefore this laser is NOT powerful enough to mark/engrave bare metal. This laser is very suitable for woodworking and I'm extremely pleased with it! The maximum engraving area is 410mm x 400mm.

I created the 410mm x 400mm grid. For anyone interested, you can find my file for the grid here: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

I struggled for two days to see how this amazing tool works to no avail, until I saw your video. Thank you very much for your help. I certainly couldn't do it on my own. The directions are precise and understandable.
Thank you very much !
Thanks man,
I just bought the laser. And with your tutorial it was super easy for me to get it up and running.
I bought the 30W last week and almost gave up because I had no clue what I got myself into.. Thank you very much for the help with this video! I cant wait to start engraving frames for my photography business!
Just engraved my first test piece after watching this super helpful video. Was about to ask about your reference grid when I found the link posted in the video description. Thanks a bunch!
I bought this model before I saw this video. It is yet to arrive but after watching your video, I am excited. Thanks for a great video that is not only informative but also gives confidence to a newbie like me.
this is the best tutorial i have seen for assembly and use of software, made my life a lot easier, many thanks 😀👍
I just got mine. It's amazing how well it's build.
Oh my god, you're a lifesaver. Thank you SO MUCH for making this video. I'm going to try it out tomorrow.
Thank you - I bought the A5 because of your good information!
Thanks Fritz! It’s an awesome feeling knowing my video was helpful to you!
Thank you for this great video ! I have had this atomstack engraver for a year and could not figure it out. I have watched other videos and still could not figure it out. watched your video and I am getting it done !
Thanks for making such a detailed and helpful video. Also thank you for sharing your awesome base plate grid in your comments. Keep the great videos coming!
Happy engraving!
Thank you, I assembled my engraver then.... yeah I was lost so I put it away and until I watched this video I had a good-priced laser engraver or an expensive white elephant. I am now ready to try again.
This video helped me get my Atomstack A5 Pro going!!! I'm not very techie and this video helped me setup the computer side of it!!! Thanks!!!
I found this video extremely helpful with the fact that I'm a newbie to laser engraving, no operating or design software experience. Thanks.
Cool! Happy engraving!
Great info!! I'm engraving your scale grid as we speak! It is perfect!!! Thank you Ding!! Greetings from Holland!
Looking to buy this laser and haven't found a clearer more helpful video than this anywhere! Amazingly good tutorial. Thank you so much! :)
Thanks for your message! I’m glad this was helpful to you!
@@DingsWorkshop Subscribed too...forgot to do it before. Thanks again, Ding.
Same!!
Thank you Ding! very helpful quick introduction!
Watching this guy, I got the equipment together in 30 minutes. I am a newbie. I feel a bit proud.
I installed my laser engraver without any issues thanks to your detailed video. Big thank you 👍
Cool! Happy engraving!
@@DingsWorkshop am facing a challenge of alignment when engraving. Example if am engraving the word BANG the N is being engraved on top of A.
What can I do to correct this?
I received a similar machine for Christmas and have NO clue how to use it. But this video is SO detailed, I feel more confident I can use it. Thank you so much..
Happy engraving!!
Thanks for the helpful video. The note about the custom buttons was especially helpful. Just received one as a gift and looking forward to getting it set up.
Happy engraving!
This was AMAZING!!! Thanks so much! The video was quick and concise.
Thanks for a very informative video helps a great deal. Sadly the one I got has the countersunk holes on the ruler side on the wrong side and seems to put the X-axis at t very slight angle.
Very good presentation. Spot on. Clear speech. Wonderful instructions. Thanks.
Just what I was looking for the day before our unit arrives. Thanks much Ding, you have a new subscriber!
Thanks Gary! Happy engraving! 😆
Mine just got delivered. Gonna watch your video while setting it up. Thank you!
Happy engraving!
I want to thank you very much. I put it together with no problem but when I went to use LaserGRBL I was so lost. Then I found your video and learned it perfectly by the way you taught. Again thanks so much!!!
Thank you for letting me know! I’m so glad to hear my video was helpful to you!
What’s the thickest wood it can cut through 1/8” or 1/16”? Can it cut through thin metal
Thanks
Thanks so much for the video! I followed everything step-by-step and it got me going! Awesome
Awesome!
If the globe-button is greyed out for you too put the laser roughly in the middle of the devige and then try moving the motors of the Laser digitally by pressing one of the blue/green buttons on the bottom left of LaserGRBL. After i pressed one of these arrows the Laser moved and then the globe button was clickable. So i moved the laser-head manually to the 0-0 origine and then pressed the globe button.
Da will ich mich mal in ein neues Thema fuchsen... wen finde ich Tomary ^^
Thank you. Unfortunately the arrow buttons are also greyed out.
Thank you!
I love you. Thanks!
At long last the days of cracking my head have come to an end. I was stuck with this machine and software but could not figure the software out. This video was very helpful
Excellent information video. Thanks for taking the time to do a good job. Has helped me a lot in selecting my first laser.
Thanks for the compliment! :)
Great information and much appreciated for the informative tutorial on the software. I just purchased this unit from Amazon and cant wait to put it through its paces!
Thanks! I’m so glad this was helpful! Happy engraving!
Thank you very much you at least don't act like people walked right out of the laser shop and starting running one or knew anything about it been through a lot of videos yours is the only one that has made sense thanks again
Never mind I needed to install the device driver. You are so helpful in your video!!
Glad you resolved the issue. Happy engraving!
Amazing tutorial video !
What program within lasergrbl would you recommend for cutting 4 mm plywood ?
You sir are the man I tried to connect my account and to no go you explained it well and got me up and running
Cool! Happy engraving!
As a newbie this helped, thank you
Do you have a video on setting up the settings for cutting wood with this machine?? Haven't found out how to do that yet.
make a guide on how to clean the laser head and lens.. thanks!
This was so helpfu; i was able to follow and learn how to use this. I want to use it on leather and now need to learn how to set up a cut file... going to follow you for sure thanks for the help!!!
Awesome! Happy engraving!
Just what I was looking for. Thanks!
I have just purchased the portable 50W version from Atomstach. Great video particularly the part on the use of the software. Thanks
Happy engraving!
Thank you for this tutorial it really helped I had to restart my computer to get the software to work and I can cut out a .jpg but I designed a glider for a school project and I have a whole bunch of dxf files now from the design and I'm apparently supposed to turning them into gcode but nothing seems to be working I have fusion 360 as a hobbyist so I can only export as dxf.
Can you do one with lightburn software and add to your items aluminum cards? Thank you.
Thanks for the detailed walkthrough 👍 It looks like you posted this about 2 months ago now, have you had any issues during that time frame? I have been researching engravers heavily and I am very interested in this product. Second question, how difficult is it to adjust the laser head? It looked like you used either 1/2" or 3/4" plywood for the demo, will adjusting the head allow thicker material underneath? Thank you
Thanks for great tutorial! I have a problem that my laser won't fire. I set the ''home'', it's well connected and when I start engraving, the laser is moving like it's engraving but without fire. Can you help me with this? Thanks!
Thanks for the video! It was super helpful!
Awesome video!!! Just got a similar atomstack and this helped tremendously!
Happy engraving!
Do you need the custom buttons? Unfortunately my computers will not open a .gz file. Or can you offer help with this?
Would you be able to dither on aluminum with a 40w attachment laser?
I just ordered the the 40 W off of Walmart for $308. I figured after baggoods price and shipping it was only $28 for more power.. I cant wait also excellent lasergrbl explanation Thanks
How is the performance? Worth buying?
Thank you for the very detailed information .
Good teaching skills you have.
Today I ordered mine because you explained very well
I will work with acrylic can you please make a movie on acrylic
You are one of the best one this platform
Thank you again
José Soares
Me to!
Can you tell me more?
I'm making flight simulator panels with backlighting. I will be engraving painted PLA. Just bought it, can't wait until it arrives
Thanks for this video, actually there is a pdf with instructions for using it but they didn't mentioned it in the site at all. You have to find it for download from other sources or ask them directly for it.
Thanks. Great video in readiness for receiving mine tomorrow.
Happy engraving!
hello, i have a question,
can i cut acrylic 3mm with it?
Thanks
So helpful thank you so much for making this video
Thank you Mr. Ding for the grid it’s awesome I got it engraved, my laser head seems like it’s loose after I mounted it, my protective coverings was already on mine? Do I need to take them off and tighten something? You can rock the laser back and forth pretty easily
odd - the laser module shouldn't feel loose. there are 2 mounting screws which are used to adjust the height of the module, can you make sure they are tight?
My proyects are coming out with the border of the engraving burn to deep. Where I can set up to stop this or what Im doing wrong? Thanks.
Thanks for a very informative video. Thanks so much!
This is a great and very helpful Video, thanks for taking the time to share.
Happy engraving!
Ding, we should connect in person as I live in Seattle! I loved your video. It's really the first one I watched, and it gave me everything I was looking for. You do a great job!
Just purchased the newer A5 pro m50 similar, but has power switch and emergency off button and also a lcd touch control with a sd card slot so you can load gcode so eliminate the need for it being connected to a computer.
But your guide is still a good reference for my machine.
Thanks! great video. I'm considering this laser and your explanation was very helpful.
Thanks! I also made a comparison between the A5 and the A5 Pro, in case you are curious on the differences: czcams.com/video/LjgJgktgiFA/video.html
@@DingsWorkshop Hi Ding. I purchased the A5 and with the help of my engineer son-in-law set up the laser last night and made a few etchings. Your video was extremely helpful. Thanks again.... Jack
That’s awesome Jack! Happy engraving!
This is a very good instructional tutorial
Thinking to get proper controller on mine. Wifi , stop buttons etc.
Great piece of machinery
hallo Sir, any others sofware can use for Atomstack A5 Pro?
which can use Cad format.
Thanks. Very useful video. My problem: my laser does not center properly. It only move to X:35 Y:32. Please help..
Anyone recommend the optimal setting for images or potrait engraving regarding lines, speed & power in lasergrbl?
does it work well on lenses for sunglasses such as cr-39 plastic
Can i engrave acrylic? Can you tell me more about the options to engrave acrylic
Thankyou
Can you please help! I just bought the Autostack A5 Pro. I put It all together and plugged it into my computer but it won’t find a com port. What am I doing wrong? They are both on and I have a little red light on on the AutoStack. I unplug the usb on my computer 💻 and plug it back in but no com port shows up.
Just ordered the A5 Pro. Can’t wait to start. Do you have a video explaining how you made the box with the grid? I definitely wanna make one of those.
HI Ryno. I created the grid using Inkscape. I uploaded here, you can download it here (free for my viewers 😆) drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dtfZVsNwGoDr9DcNOHGcreMq_--gfgh4?usp=sharing
Hello! Thank you so much for the tutorial! What size and type of wood do you use to make the grid?
Thanks! It has to be at least 410mm x 400mm, as that is the max engraving area for the engraver. I just used a piece of 1/2" birch plywood
Is there a rotary attachment for this machine? Or will there be?
I see a model of 30 W but when i check the products thru the manufacturer does not exist. any body know about the 30 Watts model? thanks.
I bought laser head separately from amazon.. I'm using arduino controller board and wiring up 12v,gnd,pwm to d11pins but laserburn always even inbetween travelling cuts.... What should I do?
Fantastic clear tutorial thanks
Great video...we are setup and ready to try our first graving.
Awesome! Happy engraving!!
Thanks for the video and review of Atomstack. I just recently purchase a YoroHome 6550 and I wish I would have seen this video before. My experience with The yorohome 6550 has been nothing but a complete nightmare so far. I'm extremely dissapointed with my purchase and I wish I would have bought a Atomstack now. Now I feel stupid.
Hello, When I went to set the zero point the globe button was inoperable. Can you help me with this?
very helpful video, im thinking about one but the only concern was lack of manuals other than assembly, you made it very easy to get started, the rest is just how creative i want to get, thank you sir.
Happy engraving!
@@DingsWorkshop i ordered the a5 pro 40, you did a good job of convincing me its the right one.
Great tutorial!!! How do you determine the distance above the object you should set the laser?
The green cover should be about 2mm above the surface of your material
I just bought this laser used and it did not come with the laser focus plate. How thick is that plate?
I am thankful for your video. I was wondering if you made the board that is under the laser? If so would you be willing to do a tutorial on it?
HI Khristina. I created the grid using Inkscape. I uploaded the file for you to download it here (free for my viewers 😆) drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dtfZVsNwGoDr9DcNOHGcreMq_--gfgh4?usp=sharing
will it cut fabric and can you retro fit limiters?
Ding, Do you have any plans to review the Atomstack Roller? Looks fun for a turner like me. Your videos are well made and easy to follow
Thanks. I have Mac so need to use LaserBurn. Setup just fine but unclear how high to set Z axis, height of laser.
What to you use for material bed, especially when cutting?
hi Barry, the focus point of the laser is 2mm from the bottom of the green acrylic cover. Therefore the optimal height is 2mm above the material you want to process
My new laser is just like this. It’s never engraved anything yet. It has places where it drops into a dip or rut and don’t want to move? What is the problem?
Can anyone help me? I bought A5 machine recently. While cutting 1.5mm ply the X-axis is not cut properly and there is no issue with Y-axis. I have seen when moving on X-axis the laser focus is not perfect.
Hi Ding, tyvm for your videos! Please help with an issue. I purchased this Laser based upon your review. Problem is, I can't get the center track to go into the grooves on the sides. It definitely looks easy on the video, however, the wheels on the central track I received seem way too wide to fit into the rails. I've tried lifting the end like you did, many times. The center track just won't go in. Any tips? Help!
sorry I just saw your question. I'm wondering if assembled the square frame correctly? Your description of wheels appears to be "too wide" sounds like the frame was not assembled in the correct order....
Awesome video. I got this to engrave words on pine. I am having issues getting the wording to come out clear. I have tried multiple adjustments in the program and it is still spotty and not clear. Any advice or do I need a higher quality machine.
Thanks
What’s the height of your laser? Optimal distance is 2mm off of the green protective cover
Great video very usefull. I ordered one.
Hi. Great Video. It helped me so much! How did you get that grid that is underneath your machine?
HI Heather, I created the grid using Inkscape. In the descriptions, I included a link you can use to download my grid file :)
Thank you!!
I am actually looking for something that can cut cardstock, preferably a few layers of 100lb cardstock at a time - do you think this machine would do the trick?
FYI, Newer models have a line switch between the transformer and main controller for convenience, the guard protecting the user from exposure is already attached and a thumbscrew replaces the two set screws to hold the laser module in place. Everything else remained the same.
Good thing they’re keep improving the product!
Thankyou for this video, very helpful, I've just received my machine this morning.
How is your machine? Would you recommend this over the Orturo master 2?
Hi, I have no experience with the Ortur and a complete newbie to laser engraving, I have been frustrated by my inability to produce something satisfactory with grey scale, my machine seems to just want to burn at 100% (or close to) or zero with no mid tones no matter what settings or photo quality or alterations I have used. Even my tests go from black to nothing with a slight alteration, I don't know if it's something I'm doing wrong, the software or the machine! It's also an auto-focus machine so can't do clear acrylic although I'm trying to figure a way of making it recognise the surface with something that can be washed off later (paint and markers get embedded in, tried chalk, crayon, stamping ink unsuccessfully too) Feeling very disheartened at the minute to be honest. I tried the settings given for the photo in this video on plywood using a high quality photo and on dither, it didn't make a mark for 1000 speed at 25% or even 50% power, I ended up on 85% and it missed nearly all the dither dots in the grey areas.
@@kazpaul75 hey thanks for replying!
Man sounds rough. I hope you can figure out what is causing the issues you're having. Don't get disheartened man! Everything takes some trial and error. But based on what you said I guess I might lean toward the Orturo more.
Update on the machine, the issue was me! Lol. I understood the machine to be 'autofocus' meaning it will adjust itself, but it's not it's 'fixed' focus and I should have set it 2mm from the bottom of the eye guard, I'd had it at 2cm! I should have read the online manual, the one that came with it just said how to construct it, not how to set it up. So for once I'm happy to discover I've been a dipstick and that it's not the machine that's at fault, lol. It's producing some brilliant stuff now it's set up right. It's probably the same as the Ortur apart from the focus. All the best with your machine when you get one :)
Also, with regards to the clear acrylic not being recognised, I've just come across somebody's idea of using rubberised paint that easily peels off later so that the laser recognises that as the surface. They also advised raising the acrylic up slightly so that the underside doesn't get charred. I haven't tried it yet but it looks promising 😀
thank you for this very useful video, can you provide me with the ''maximum power'' that you used to engrave metal, I will be very grateful
Thank you for the video Sir, You are pretty awesome!
Hi Ding. Great video. I’m looking at getting this laser. Can the laser be moved up to get thicker bits of wood under? Also I would like to etch part of wooden dowels, can a long dowel fit under the frame for etching?
HI Ryan, the laser is not limited by the size of the material. for example, if you have a large material, you can place the machine on the material directly. The machine rests on 4 legs so dowels can definitely move freely between the legs.
