    The crazy thing about how the Meteor actually performs is that it can literally control throttle, so it would travel towards the target at a certain speed then the idea is that it would accelerate towards the target when it got closer, which is what gives it such a crazy no escape zone

    By seeing a BVR engagement you can abstract the relevance of a good MAWS system, it not only provides warning against missiles launched under passive tracking conditions or with lpi techniques but is also able to provide exceptional situational awareness in a BVR engagement, giving the pilot the ideal clues to switch between offensive or defensive postures.

    The Meteor missile has the ability to throttle up and down, it’s range is superior to the AMRAAM and it’s more maneuverable. How it’s modeled in DCS well that’s highly subjective based on the fact that true Meteor specs are highly classified. Great vid as always GS.

    • @christianm1533
      @christianm1533 Před 2 lety +46

      Agreed. But since energy expenditure by drag is squared that of velocity at high speed flows (M1+), halving the speed (M2,5 instead of M5) will reduce your energy expenditure to a quarter (correction: Energy expeniture to overcome drag is cubed. So energy use is reduced to 1/8). I'm sure that anyone with basic math skills can draw some conclusions from that.
      Either way. A missile coming at you at M2,5 with energy to spare is still an extremely lethal missile last time I checked.

      Strange modeling. You can't jam a modern missile this way.
      As Gripen will send midair updates to the Meteor and IRIS-T. Gripen has very directional and very jam-proof updates to both missiles and other Gripens.
      You need to jam both the aircraft and the missile continuously with more power than a focused directional link (not going to happen unless you stand in the direct beam way).

    The Meteor can control its speed and fuel comsumption. It means that it can slow down it's engine to economize fuel or to have more time to maneuver into the target, it can save its fuel to use its engine in final maneuvers to hit the target. Meaning that it doesnt rely only in its kinect energy like other misiles, that wastes all its fuel and after goes with no energy to pursuit the bandit. It performs MUCH better than a AIM-120.

    • @MrFarnanonical
      @MrFarnanonical Před 2 lety +4

      Slowing down the missile isn't something they're going to use against a fighter, once you lose that energy it's not coming back. The slower the missile goes the easier it is to defeat, plain and simple, it doesn't matter how much fuel it still has. forcing the missile to pull Gs is going to bleed energy. The thing that makes the Meteor dangerous for fighters is the speed, not the theorical range, not it's fuel efficiency.
      When they talk about these missiles having a massive 300 mile range it's exactly like the Aim-54, you're not going to hit a fast moving fighter at 300 miles, you might be able to hit a bomber, or a tanker. The Meteor should be quite a bit more lethal at lets say. 40-50 miles than an Aim-120, just because of how fast it is. It's still going to be fast if the enemy is defending hard, trying to to slow it down.

      The modelling on the Meteor is strange. The is only a slim chance that the F-15 would survive any of these within a 50 mile radius coming from high altitude. The no escape zone is about 30 miles, all altitudes, as the missile will fight drag less on low altitude by controlling the burn.
      The low altitude difference between the AMRAAM and the Meteor is even greater than the high altitude one.

    Gripen is on goodlookin airplane, at least my eyes like it alot. You should try em really against different Russian planes. Saab always announces that "What comes to Sukhois, E/F models are made most spesific against Sukhois. In that we have a black belt". Well those are commercials ofc that was alot on the airshows etc, when here in Finland new fighter type was about to be selected. Actually the pair that got to "finals" were F-35 and Gripen. F-35 won, somehow cost of usage / milage / Finnish defence politics that got f-35 points high. At the times f-35 was still banging head, with its problems, Gripen was long favorite for many pilots. It is very capable fighter, and BTW Meteor is a missile that has shown alot of interest in USAF also. If and when it is going to work as intented, it really will be very hot in markets. What is really problem for many ppl with Gripen is lack of real combat experience, though they were in Libya in NATO/US Air dominance coalition. But if I remember right, missions was left somekind of protecting the protectors of escorts / strikes etc. What i have heard, it is also very nice plane to fly and the turnaround time is worlds high-end! Though it has not reverse gear like Viggen did ;D It is also designed to use roads etc. as "moving" airfields / ground controls. Sweden has always been good making their own war gear for use in their own country. Also worlds top in Naval warfare. Specially in missileboats and submarines.

    RX: a different strategy vs Gripen. Fire a pair off from initial highest altitude, crank, shoot again, crank more, shoot again. The direction of the cranks should match his cranks. There's an old sniper's maxim when shooting at targets running between cover. If you miss, shoot slightly ahead of general direction of travel. Then shoot behind, then shoot exactly where your original shot missed. It's very effective I'm told. I don't think human behavior is going to change bc you're sitting in an aircraft. What you should end up with is missiles somewhat line-abreast closing in a pincer maneuver as the 1st two missiles probably lofted and therefore will take more time getting to the target, the 3rd missiles you'd want to loft a little (find that launch altitude) and the 4th, not at all. This should have them all arriving at about the same time from different directions and angles of approach.
    This would be a lot more effective if the missiles were talking to each other or to "The Hive" via DataLink, which is still SciFi (but much closer than in '04 when I was thinking on it), but I think this would be worth investigating in DCS if you can find a willing adversary pilot. If I were that pilot I'd want to 1st investigate the performance of Meteor in DCS to know when to crank, recommit and when to get the hell out of Dodge. Meteor may well change the dimensions of the MAR.

The advantage I guess the eagle has in this Bvr engagement is it has a much higher climbing rate than the Gripen, considering Eagle has two engines than a single engined Gripen. But its been knows as well that Gripen is lethal in Bvr engagements, Im sure because of the Meteor missiles it carries.
