Wow that Sharpie just added the right amount of pizzazz! Not too much! Love it and I would have never thought of it.
That is truly amazing. I've been sewing for over 50 years and I'm still not that brave. LOL. The jacket is just gorgeous and I love the Sharpie detail. Bravo!!!
The sharpie detail is genius and gorgeous. It looks so natural with the check pattern and the loose weave of the material. Bravo!
Glad you like it! I knew it wasn't for everyone, and some would think I was cuckoo, but my tribe would love it!! Thanks for being part of the tribe💖
LOL, when you said "Sharpie", I had to rewind to be sure I heard what I thought I heard!! But an excellent result. Way to think outside the box!!!
You should see my face, thinking about all those oversize jackets in my closet. OMG, you have created a monster!!!
That's hilarious, and the best kind of monster I've ever created!🤣
Catherine. This was amazing to watch. I love that when you de-construct to then construct something new I learn more about construction of garments and can see it in my minds eye. I love that you did the trim with your sharpie. I’m working my way back through your videos. You should have a lot more subscribers. I’m going to let everyone I know about you. Karen x
Awww, thanks Karen! I appreciate the support so much!!
"It'll be fine. Don't worry..." she says with a laugh. I laughed right out loud, Catherine. You are such an amazing teacher! So much helpful detail😊
The sharpie makes it perfect. Genius!
What?!!! A Sharpie?!!! It's brilliant!! I'd love to have that level of design confidence!
Janelle, I'm loving all your comments and your enthusiastic response to my videos! It's really gratifying, and I'm so glad you found me!
Smart lady...appreciate the time and effort to inspire to upcycle instead of simply throwing out. Bodes well for sustainable living and looking after our planet for generations to come. Keep up the good work.
That's right, friend! That's the guiding principle! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Catherine how adorable, you and your jacket❤😊
Love this Catherine, the Sharpie was a stroke of genius, just goes to show if you step away from a project for a while inspiration comes!
Right!? Sometimes that break is all you need to see it in a fresh light! Thanks for stopping by, Frugalisama!
Watching you remake your awesome finds brings back memories! I was a seamstress (as my home business) for almost 30 years! I would say 80% was alterations, which I came to love! Sometimes a little stressful since it was someone else’s clothing. I’m almost 67 and have slowed down quite a bit, sewing now for myself and family. I LOVE TO SEW!!!
I love going on these sewing adventures with you! 🎉
Awww, that's so nice to hear! I'm so happy to have you along for the adventure!
i LOVE the way you teach! You make it all so clear and easy to understand. We CZcams viewers and your school students are lucky to have such a great teacher!
Awww, thanks, Sheri! Great to have you on board!
Girl, you are crazy! But in a good way. Love the result - very creative and really pretty.
Haha, thanks, Vickie!
Wow Catherine! I didn't know whether you were going to pull this one off, but the
Sharpie made all the difference. What imagination!!! Way to go Girl!
Haha, thanks Momzilla! Great to have the moral support!
You are fearless!! Awesome job on making it yours.
Thanks, Nadine! It definitely ended up feeling like ME!
I loved this. I thought it was about the same as making a tailored jacket but you didn’t have to buy the fabric. Plus no button holes! Yea.
Right!? Plus I didn't have to make the cute tab detail on the pockets and cuffs. It was definitely easier than making the jacket from scratch. And $4? You could never buy the fabric, lining, thread and buttons for that price!
So cool!!! Very creative and high end looking. Gives it a more edgy look.
What a twist! The result looks great, kind of like scattered seed beads. I think I would have cobbled together a back facing out of the scraps.
Yes, I know what you mean! I was surprised that there was no back neck facing in the original jacket.
You do a great job. I don't think I'd ever tackle some of the things you do but I enjoy watching. Maybe I will try someday. Thanks!
Wow I am blown away with this project 👏👍😎🐕🦺
Wow Catherine, this was great! The first time I have seen someone alter the big shoulder pad look, and I would never have thought to cut off the top of the sleeve! And making the arm eye smaller by lifting the whole jacket is really cool. So often the huge arm’s eye just ruins the whole fit. Congratulations!🎊🍾🎈
Thanks, Melissa! Your detailed comment sows me that you know what you're talking about! You've been there!
This is the corret way to retailor a jacket, not cut the lenght. That way the wrist is elegant, especially for petite bodies, the width wrist is sooo important.
Not for the faint of heart! LOL! What impressed me the most was how you didn’t mess with armscye/underarm. Smart. That way lies madness! 😅
I love your attitude and way you do things, you make trying new or things out of your comfort zone less intimidating ❤
I’m very impressed with your insight and skill. That jacket turned out very cute!
It was fun seeing how you truly remade this jacket! But I could not believe how fiddly it was…😳 You are definitely a trooper for seeing this to the end. Your added dots gave it just the right look! Well done…👏
Thanks so much! It was definitely fiddly, especially that understitching, but still fun to make!
Forgot about the secret entrance through the lining😮thanks for a fun journey!
Wow, not a project for the faint at heart. Hard. Great job!
I really like the remake of this jacket. It did seem a little more work than I would tackle. It turned out really cute and I LOVE the Sharpie trim!!!
Your skills and creativity together make you unstoppable. Not to mention your bravery! Shortening the sleeves by drawing a new LINED armhole is gutsy!
Thank you so much! It's definitely easier to face a challenge when the jacket only cost $4!!
You are so creative and, brave. The Sharpie worked like magic. The finished project looks great.
Love it...and agree, the softer look of the "trim" is perfect 🥰
Yes! Thank you, I'm so glad you agree.
Love the attention to detail. Thanks for the lesson on the sleeve reduction, that’s completely new information for me.
Yeah Catherine!! You just added thousands of little seed beads (sharpie dots) to the jacket!! Awesome😊 Maybe a few sewn on black seed beads added to the mix of dots would really add eye appeal, awe, and added value😊. LindaRae
Ooooh, I like that idea, LindaRae! I might just give that a try! Thanks!
Yes! Great idea!
That sharpie Pointillism technique looks FABULOUS! Reminds me of lace. I think the right lace appliqué would work as well. Great job. Beautiful Jacket. My mom had some Chanel inspired jackets, so I’m going to alter them to fit me, Thanks💖
Yes, pointalism! That's it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I keep trying on jackets at the thrift store and never like the fit. As an experienced seamstress I would remove the linning.....then I saw your video and wow you just left it in place and worked around it. I love your remake and the sharpie drawing was brilliant!!!
I'm happy to see you just go for it! When you say your might be out $ and some time you fail to grasp what you learned and experienced! Don't sell that part short. Beautiful!
I appreciate that!
Fantastic! Loved the video, although your understitching was not for the faint of heart. I think I would have wussed out, pressed it well then top stitched to make everything behave. You're a wonder.
Thanks, Mary! I did consider doing exactly what you've said. It would have been easier, and maybe it would have been just fine!
Brilliant sharpie, my husband calls that thinking outside the box❤ I love watching your videos, so talented and sweet😊
The result is just amazing. All the white on white made it a little difficult to see, but you are a true tailor. Keep going with coat/jacket alterations.
Kind of cool, right!?
Wow, you have an amazing eye for beautiful details! Great makeover; thanks for sharing!
All I can say is WOW! I was silently screaming DON"T DO IT when you mentioned the sharpy, but it looks amazing.
Haha, so was my husband! He thought it was a terrible idea!
Totally awesome !! Love how the jacket turned out. What a great idea to use the sharpie. It sure would have scared me a lot to do something like that. Sometimes I do not get things like that done because I procrastinate to much. Love your approach of just doing it.
I was also sceptical about the sharpie but it looks really good I am amazed
I like the update on this jacket a lot more than the shoulder pads.
You can't beat quality. I love it as is.
This is super inspiring, and the trim at the end was an enormous, delightful surprise!
I have a Ralph Lauren jacket I bought about fifteen years ago on eBay that I have been wanting to resize. It is a size 14 and I am an 8. This video has inspired me to give it a try! Thank you for all your videos! I love watching them!
Wow. The Sharpie added so much! Amazing
This sewing project is so, so fab. I was kind of scared for you, the whole time. I am learning you have to be brave, to sew ahead, with many sewing projects. Harsh, to you. Thx.
The sharpie - heart in my mouth!!! But it worked :) Great tutorial and gorgeous jacket.
Inspiring and just plain cool!
I was skeptical about the sharpie. But Holy Moly It made it into a whole NEW cool look. Way to be BRAVE and go for it
I don't sew yet am plagued all the time with what I want to change in clothing all the time. Seeing your video made me realize I was right, I just need the skills. The Sharpie came out incredibly nice.
Thanks Millie! And I agree that sewing is such a valuable life skill!
You should be over the moon... great project. Thanks for the journey wiith you.
What a wonderful plot twist. Love the effect!!!
Can I just say how much I love your videos!! They are so helpful. Actual tailoring!! These are what I need for my flips to not flop! LOVE. Thank you.
You really made that jacket turn out the way you wanted it. It looks great and you look marvelous in it. Someone’s going to wonder where you got it from. I know I would!
Cute. Clever. Contemporary. Courageous.
Oh my gosh! The possibilities. Great job. This gets me excited to go through my closet and start changing the things I don’t like.
What a brilliant transformation. WOW!!! I absolutely love it and you make it seem so simple. I love upcycling old garments but not very good at it. It never comes out as good as what I have in mind. Watching your videos is so inspiring. Well done!!
Thanks, Amina! Keep trying and you'll get better and better with each project!
Love, love, love the Sharpie trim. You nailed it! So inspiring. Thnx so much.
Thanks so much, Diana! That means so much!
Thanks for all the tipps & tricks you share in this video - great tutorial
You are so inspiring! Thank You!! I always feel like 'I CAN DO THAT!' 😄. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Really love watching your shows bc you are so real with us, especially when you say 'I'm scared'... I think some of us were feeling scared with you before you said it!😄.
Love the jacket and the sharpie great idea
OMG! OMG! OM! Catherine, what a great tutorial. The way to rearrange that jacket and then top it with Sharpie is just too much. You are a genius. Thank you, thank you very much. I will have to try this tutorial with an old jacket😍🥰😍
I thought I would just hate that Sharpie effect but NO!! I really, like it 😀
Right!? It was a crazy thing to try, but when I did it on the scrap pieces, I fell in love!
This is great, I thrifted a fine camel hair blazer top and it’s shoulders are like yours here ..it’s a similar alteration. It nice. I am glad you posted this. I will be self fitting too.
That is awesome! Good for you, and good luck with it!
I love it too! Great idea, much more subtle and pretty than the trim. I once used a colored sharpie to color some crochet lace I wanted to use as trim for some pants pockets. I wear those pants all the time and the trim still looks great.
Thanks, I think the sharpie is surprisingly pretty too! And I love your idea of using coloured sharpies on lace!
A sharpie?? Genius!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
That looks sooo good!I would have never thought of that sharpie detail but it is just what it needed! It almost gave it a hand stitched look. You are so smart!
Wonderful tutorial. Thank you. BTW super cute too.
Wow ! What a beautiful transformation ! And the Sharpie just BRILLIANT ! GREAT JOB !
Really interesting about the sleeve Catherine.
Thank you! Shortening a sleeve from the top seems intimidating, but it's actually not that bad!
I've been planning to make a longer line channel style jacket for over a year now. It took me a while to assemble all of the materials i needed, but I have been putting it of for a few months now becuaase of "the fear". Having watched this video I now feelna lot braver.
Good luck to you! I've made the "full Chanel" only once, and it was a very satisfying process. Truth be told though, I like this upcycled jacket better than the one I made from scratch!
Thanks for sharing. I am an accomplished seamstress but avoid alterations. You have given me confidence. Binge watching. 😉
Wonderful clear step by step tutorial and lovely result, thank you. Will gather my courage and have a go at a similar jacket that I have been putting off doing!
Wow!! What courage! I was biting my nails through this adventure. It looks fantastic! !🙌
Just amazing. I have a man’s jackets that I want to alter for myself but was scared and didn’t know where to start. This was great and now I’m going to have a go. Thanks for the inspiration.
Go for it, Jane! I hope it turns out great!
I love this and thank you for your in depth and easy to follow explanations. The Sharpie trim was inspired!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed watching!
Amazing! I've sewn since high school, which seems a century ago, but I gleaned lots from your video! You have a lot of imagination because I dont believe i would have thought of the marking pen for trim but it was terrific! It really did need a trim and you came up with the perfect one! This was the second video I watched of yours, but I'm subscribing!! Wonderful!!
Sharpie: genius!
You are one fearless lady! Wonderful job, thank you so much for sharing x x
Thank you so much for your videos! Because of this one, I learned how to shorten the sleeves on a vintage wool tuxedo jacket. I finished yesterday, in time to have something warm to wear to my brother's wedding. (We're in Central Alberta)
I had the jacket for three years but didn't quite know where to start. I took in the sleeves and shortened them from the top down to preserve the cuffs and buttons. Thank you Catherine!
Thank you so much for doing this .I loved the process. I learnt a lot and will tackle this one myself. The trim is perfect .perfect
New subscriber here and I just love your tutorial on refashioning this gorgeous jacket. The finished design is beautiful and the Sharpie trim was genius!!!!
Thank you so much! Great to have you on board!
Excellent job, Catherine! You're living my dream!! I'm going to the thrift store for a $4 top to make my own 👍🏼😍
Yay! Great to hear, Tricia! Good luck!❤️
Awesome idea with the sharpi!!
Brilliant 👏
Love that!!
Now I must fing a jacket like yours!
Wish me luck😊
Bonnie Ohio ❤
Sharpie was def. the way to go. It looks GREAT!!
I’ve altered a too large jacket, but I’m embarked to say, I didn’t do it the right way-your way. This technique will definitely go in my -right way to do - file.
Great job, brilliant idea with the Sharpie.
Once again, an inspiring project! Thank you! Totally loved the final look with the "sharpie bead" trim. So much better than the heavy black trim or the lighter one. Could not believe it was going to turn out. What a final twist!
Thanks, Charlie! I'm glad you agree. I was surprised how much I didn't like the black trim!!
Soooo wonderful when you got the skills. Live watching these.
Thanks, Sandy! So glad to have you on board!
I love the sharpie add-on!!!
Thanks, Brenda! Me too!
Brava! The Sharpie detail is too cute. Love it. 💕🎉
I love it. The Sharpie idea is genius!!!
A black Sharpie is the Duck Tape of sewing. So many uses. Who knew???
I love watching your videos. I learn so much. When you used the sharpie for trim work a light bulb came on in my mind. I would love to see trim work done with beautiful thread and special machine stitching.➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️😂
love the sharpie trim
Thanks, me too!
