  • Hi Everyone, last service video on the Ducati 1098S, in this one I am going to be carrying out a basic service on the front forks which are the standard Ducati 1098S Ohlins, model number FG5110.
    In the video I will be stripping and cleaning all the major components before replacing the leaking fork oil seal, dust seal and refilling with fresh fork oil and setting the air gap back to the standard setting.
    If you enjoy the video, please like, share and subscribe for more content.
    This bike will be listed for sale shortly and I will load a video to show potential buyers around the bike.

    May I suggest putting seals on inner tube first in order of dust seal, lock ring, oil seal and washer. I find that added security that fork will not leak due to damaged seals.

      Its on the Ohlins service card for the FG5110 fork.

    Shouldn't you pump the damper rod to fill it with oil before you measure with the syringe?

    • @Nellie-zv7tz
      @Nellie-zv7tz Před 10 měsíci

    Great video as always !!!
    Only one doubt: why didn't you close the fork cap to the tightening torque, not needed?
    What tool did you use for the cap?
    What paper did you polish the stem with?
    Ok ... there are three questions ... :D

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Teo,
      Cap is only done up to 10nm which is not much more that gentle force, I used a pin wrench (similar to angle grinder disc tool) this time but I also have a cap socket for the ohlins.
      I used an 800 grit wet and dry paper to clean the stanchion.

    • @DesmoWerx

      They are usually stamped on the bottom of the fork leg, either at the very bottom or on the lower face of the caliper mount.

    Hey Nellie,
    Thanks for the video and all the others. They are super informative for us DIYers.
    I serviced my forks with your instructions but my compression damp8ning now has 35 clicks on both legs and I cannot understand why or if thats what it should be.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated, sir.
    Thabk you and please keep up with great videos.

      Can anyone give me an 8dea why this would happen? Thank you

    • @vintagevalhalla7523
      @vintagevalhalla7523 Před 9 měsíci

      I am no expert, as I just recently did my forks for the first time… but on assembly, it seems an easy mistake to make is to not fully seat the cap onto the damping rod. In this video, I believe he uses a notched plate to hold the spring compressed against the lock nut (fully threaded down). If you don’t do this, the cap is going to mate to the top of the spring retainer before it is fully seated on the damping rod. It seems this would create a gap between the adjuster and the damping rod, causing more clicks to get into the adjustment?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  Před 8 měsíci

      If they are both 35 clicks then thats likely the adjustment range on your forks, I don't have any data in my service manuals or service sheets that tell me the full range/number of clicks. I was always taught work from fully closed when setting them up so never counted fully out, the manual guides the same as well.
      As I don't have one in the workshop now I cannot check to see what I have as a range. Sorry I cannot be more help.

    If I want to replace the oil in my 996 forks, are oil and dust seals the only parts I need to replace?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  Před rokem +1

      Hi Harry if just doing an oil change you can get away with just the oil and dust seals. Personally I would check the bushes are not excessively worn as if they are then you might as well replace at the same time 😊

      @DesmoWerx  Před 3 lety

      Hi Michael, there is no wear showing on the bushes, the bike has only done just over 3500 miles in total, and only about 700 of that in my ownership, they may have been replaced before I got the bike as they look pristine.

      Love your videos. Thanks for all the info and time spent on them.
      I recently serviced my forks on my 012 ducati streetfighter 1098s. It was leaking from one leg and following your instructions, I was able to service them.
      However, my rebo7nd damping turns 30 some clicks.
      Does that sound right to you? If not, what do you think I did wrong that it now reads 35 clicks?
      Thanks again
