I still miss the way you used to be able to catch glimpses of the ride in parts of the inside queue. Seeing the cars zooming by was a great way to amp up the excitement. This is from 80s/90s and I'm not even entirely sure the queue goes past the same areas anymore to even make that possible but it was a favorite part of the queue for me as a kid. For the ride itself I'd love to see an occasional easter egg projection of the chocolate chip cookie asteroid from the old days.

When space mountain first opened in Florida in 1974, the biggest advertising point (and warning) was that you would experience weightlessness three different times. I'll never forget my first ride. I was a supervision in the park back then. To test the new attractions (and to help train the opening crew) before opening them to the public, Disney would let its employees ride first. The first "plunge" was pretty awesome. The next two plunges got better and better. The third plunge was just long enough that you wondered momentarily if you were going to come out of it whole feeling totally weightless. Had there not been a metal bar over ones legs and lap, I am certain we would have "floated" out of our seats. There was just enough "give" in the bars that one actually experience weightlessness. Very exhilarating and very surprising that Disney would create such a "thrill" attraction. It was awesome. There were warning signed that pregnant women and people with heart issues should not ride this attraction and with good reason. No roller coater had ever achieved such a "weightlessness effect". It was also very dark in these plunge areas which added to the thrill as you plunged into darkness. Sadly, too many people ignored the warnings and there were medical emergencies while riding this new attraction. Not long after it opened, Disney closed it and reduced the dips and slowed the coater down before it re-opened.

This was the only roller coaster I ever been on in my life, I loved it because I'm afraid of heights, so in the dark it wasn't scary at all. Had gone on it 4 times, and that was back in the early 80's, and the seats were totally different, a set of 4 seats, two and two inline, so that you either sat alone, or have another person basically sitting in your lap, with both having seat belts of course. And what made it even better the first time, was just by chance that a beautiful young lady inline next to me, obliged to sit together when we saw how the seats were configured. Thanks for the great memories!

There is a lot of space in this area around Space Mountain and the old Captain EO/Shrunk the Audience. That whole area needs to be re-done because it is wasted space.
I wish Disneyland would close Tomorrowland and do a complete two-year overhaul. If they are not going to reinstall the PeopleMover, remove the pylons/tracks. It would be nice if that whole area were re-thought, re-imagined, re-designed. The space they have here can have so much more, maybe not Tron, but something. I do believe two roller coasters and/or rides can be added to this area. Keep the original white buildings and do something with world of motion. There is enough space there for a nice dark ride.

There is only so much they can do with an indoor roller coaster that originally opened in 1975 - nearly 50 years ago now. They renovated the interior look one time since it opened. The roller coaster was the first in history to use "block" security and there is a great video on CZcams that explains how it works. However, it is so old, and the computers running it have been replaced during that one renovation the blocks remain unchanged. Still it was an incredible ride for its time and today holds its own as entertainment in the 21st century. The blue lights he talks about they flash intentionally as there is a periodic current through those lights to create a strobe like effect. It is intentional. It has done it since that initial renovation occurred to show "lift off."

    My observations:
-The top half of the mountain definitely looks like it was fully painted, you're right about the lower half though. Everything in the outside queue looks re-painted and refixtured in places.
-For those complaining about the lights ("they had a month for this!!"), I imagine this wasn't even a priority for this particular refurb. I hold the theory that this will be heavily reimagined in a phase 2 refurb, which supports the truth that it would otherwise be easy and quick to fix **back to the state it was in before. The things they did in this refurb justify being done in a month (for Disney's lower standards).
-The on-ride projections and stars are really nice.
-If you DO expect 110% from Disney in 1 month, good luck. Hopefully the doubled parks budget goes to maintenance, not just a park expansion.

Space Mountain's been a classic favorite. But the Disney Paris had been revamped to Hyperspace Mountain (Star Wars theme), which they also made faster, or maybe just felt like it.. LOL

I have an idea for Disney if they refurbish the ride again, at the blue light tunnel, replace it with asteroids like the old version and make the asteroid tunnel still have the charging sound, making the blue lights glow and flash on the roller coaster trains at the sides, that would be a cool idea!

Haven't been to DL since early 2019 so it's hard to remember what it was like then. I think I do remember the starfield but they look more intense. Overall much more intense compared to WDW -- the Disneyland version is much better all around to me. Glad to hear they're still working on improving it, even if it's not all quite done yet. My only hope is that someday they'd restore the original entrance, but also with a route for people who can't use an escalator or PeopleMover style escalator ramp.

@@FreshBakedDisney So, I made that comment before hearing you say that they have a plan to make that pre-lift section even better. While that's great to hear, how long will we have to wait for that? Surely some light bulbs couldn't cost an arm and a leg in the meantime. I will say though, the projections in the ride itself look fantastic. I can't wait to see it in person. Thanks David.

FreshBaked. David, The Question is "Did they fix the blue lights"? the answer is no. But it was nice to hear that they will be doing something with that area in the near future. What does Disney mean by near future? That it's on the "Treehouse" fast tracked timeline. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Although I've never been to Disneyland, I've been to Disney World 100 times and any version of SM that doesn't look like the one in FL looks wonky to me. Especially how the one in FL is more narrow and you sit single file 3 to each cart. Plus the way the entry tunnel goes under the ground at a good angle and then you start going back up hill to get to the bank line prior to boarding.
I went to Epcot yesterday for only the 3rd time in my life (I'm 52 now) and the Test Track ride was pretty impressive & fun. My kids loved it & were screaming the enter time lol.

No, the best part of this ride is how dark it is so that you can't see the track. It feels like wearing a blindfold. It was even darker when it originally opened. I remember I couldn't even see my hand in front of me.

    • @ExpeditionSteve
      @ExpeditionSteve Před 10 měsíci

I like not seeing the track too, just meant they can project more space images on the screen, but keeping it still dark enough where you can’t see the track.

I rode this in June of 2023 and at that point it was hyperspace mountain and I was so depressed to ride it. It was a fun ride, but the star wars trimmings seemed like a needless wrapper that did not add anything to the experience. Especially with Batuu West being opened for what? 2 years now?

The last time I was on the mountain was in 2015. I'm 5'10"" and 170 lbs. and could have definitely used more leg room at the time. It kind of felt like I was a sardine being cramped in the cars. I wonder if they increased the room for passengers in this upgrade.
