- I have cut my own hair quite a few times before, just to get rid of some of my split ends. This time I tried this technique to cut my own hair and it was AWFUL! When I was checking my hair the whole way through this I was looking in my camera viewer and I couldn't see what was actually going on... as you can tell! But I would 100% not recommend this way of cutting your hair to anyone.
So from this I am NEVER cutting my hair again and I'm so thankful to the hairdresser that has saved me!

To get it layered I think
this technique works well if you do it right, you made a few mistakes....the ponytail has to be at the very front of your head not back at all, it has to be combed and put in the pony tail as straight as possible with no bumps in your hair or twists in the ponytail, also you cut under the tie not above it, and lastly you have to take into consideration that your part after you take it down is to one side not down the middle......you just need to take more time when prepping for the cut and it turns out nice.
You're not meant to cut your hair in a ponytail at all. It brings the back hair forwards and when you actually cut it, it looks tacky because it's naturally layered and when you cut the back layers in line with the front layers you'll cut the back layers too long and the front layers too short.

@ivy heidenreich When cutting hair you must find out where you have your natural part and comb your hair straight down from scalp through the hair strand and then cut your desired length. I'm a licensed hairstylist so yea I do know what I'm talking about.

Two low even pigtails is the best way to cut your own hair at home in my experience. That’s how I do it and I’m always able to get it straight and even

If you put the ponytail on the top portion of your head you are only cutting hair off the top. Pulling the hair all the forward cuts more off the front and some of the hair off the top and usually not anything off the back or very little.

You did it completely wrong there is bumps in your hair and it's not all the way in the front and this d i.y is for layers
Ok, stop and think for a second..... you put a pony tail at the very front of your head. You didn't even cut off the hair from the back of your head. You end up cutting the front. Test it without the ponytail holder; hold onto a piece of hair from the back and pull it up over your head to the front. Does it reach? NO! You are cutting the front and sides of your hair.
it works if you have very long hair though. Did this for years

I have been cutting my own hair since age fourteen. It can be a bit tricky. It requires a hand mirror pointed at a bathroom mirror afterward to ensure the results are even in back, as well as flipping each side from front to back to get good side views, as well as taking smaller sections from back to front systematically to trim up, then checking against the other trimmed bits. It takes some practice. I hope to do a tutorial on my channel so people will be able to see what the heck I'm talking about. :0)
I'm a month late but look up "self cut system" on here, I've been cutting my own hair for a couple years and being able to use both hands recently thanks to my ghetto diy self cut system is *everything* lol

Right? It just doesn't work. You don't see what you're doing. I just brush it forward and take the same amount off both sides. Had she done that, it might have not been perfect but certainly better than this.
I think this is a method to get layers, not to take length off. But it's still not perfect.
If you want to get layers and if you know how to do it than it really works perfectly .... I cut my hair with a ponytail for a few years and I really love the method.... Takes me 2 minutes :)
If you do it correctly, your hair is just longest in the back of your head right above your neck and then it gets gently shorter and shorter what more you move to the front to your forhead.... It works, you just gotta do it well xD

For anyone reading: her hair ended up like this because she was not taking any length off the bottom. Only off the top. If you look at the pony tail at 2:01 and she says “why is there some hair here?” That’s her length from the nape of her neck (occipital bone and down). She never even cut the length because she is over directing the hair forward. She was literally only cutting the top of her head from about the crown forward- it wasn’t only the pony tail that was the issue, but the actual direction that she was pulling the hair. Hope this helps :)

You don't have to go to the salon to cut your hair, you just have to know how to do it... I've been cutting my hair since I was 10 and i never had any disaster, sometimes pieces were longer but it's normal since it's my own hair. It's not that hard (maybe a little bit hard on short hair), you don't have to put them in a ponytail or whatever, just wet them, straight them with your fingers and cut...
I've never been to a salon, I don't like the fact that I would pay someone a lot of money to do something that i can do myself for free

Tiana Rios exactly! i've always dyed my hair by myself, i've done balayages, bleach, purple, red, snow white, grey, blue, pink, all by myself and never had any disaster (my profile pic is an example of what I did all by myself). why would I pay someone hundreds to do that, it's not that hard...

I tried that technique before and my pic proves it! Mine layered and was short. I like the length of the professional cut on you, it suits you!
Wow it's not even brushed. The ponytail was all bumpy, how can you get a even cut with your hair all over the place smh. Also as I'm sure you realized with this technique you don't remove length, you remove weight the only hair coming out is from the interior. So you were right when you said your hair wasn't long enough at the start to account for all that length. In the salon people are always amazed at how much hair can be taken off without touching the length. Don't feel bad though we've all done this in one way or another

I did this method and my hair came out perfect. The problem is that she didn't thoroughly brush it smooth and put it to the front of her head. Makes all the difference in the world if the hair is placed in the right spot on the forehead.

That’s why Ive only ever trimmed my hair and I do it myself and only do a half inch at a time. A ponytail at the nape of your neck with a second hair tie put just under it and then slid down to the length you want to trim is a super fail proof way of doing it! I’ve done mine that way and I can 100% back up the efficacy of it. Gloria glam here on CZcams is a lifesaver!!! I love her!!

This exact same thing happened to me, and I could not figure out why because I just pulled my hair into a pony tail like all these videos showed, but then it turned out that most of the cut came off the front and very little in the back, even though I cut quite a bit off. Your hair looks adorable. I want a short hair cut lie this, but I do not trust myself to cut it short like this so I will also have to go to the hair dresser.
My worst memory with my hair was when I was 6 and I wanted to curl my hair so I got a comb that had really small bristles that were close together. So anyways I got the comb and wrapped my hair around it. I waited a few minutes like you would with a hair curler and I yanked on it and ripped half my hair out and the rest of my hair was just matted.
No poor thing! I saw that for a long time in the video and I was like wait was it like that before, is she going to notice that chunk of hair! I felt so bad for you!❤️😭

What happens with this method is you are taking more length from the front--and since your part is to the side, that's why you had an uneven section. You were taking no length off the back. When you ponytail your hair up like that, think about how your hair lays---the longest pieces when placing a ponytail on the top of your head will be the front hairs and those closest to the ponytail. The ponytail method will give you layers, but not cut length.
A better way is having a ponytail, but I put my head upside down. This way I can feel, before I ponytail it, what hairs are where. For me, I have more growth in the front than in the back/underneath, so this method helps even out my hair.

You should have stopped after the first cut because I thought it looked absolutely gorgeous on you. Then you hastily threw your hair up again without brushing it for the 2nd cut and I think that’s where you may have messed up. And since you centered it on the cut, but then parted it on the side afterwards it looked a bit lopsided. You got scissor happy girl. ☺️

This technic works aktually really good for me. I always cut my hair like this. But you have to make the ponytail right at the front so the front part blends in better. For me it works. 🙈

I just cut 2 inches off of mine today. All I do is shower and when it is still damp but not too wet I part it down the center and run through it with a wide toothed comb. After that I put both sides over my shoulder I eye the length. It’s really unconventional and most people would put a hair tie in to determine length but idk I always though that just eyeing works so much better. I’m 16 and have been cutting my own hair since I was about 13. You are very beautiful by the way!!!

The shorter bit is because the ponytail was to the right so that side was closer to your head. For anyone wanting to try this technique, make sure the ponytail is right at the hairline. and when you cut, cut towards your face, you get a more even finish.hope this helps anybody!!

Ok so it isn’t even... but I like it like that! It honestly looks so good on you. This kind of inspired me.
Once in a tight pony tail in the front of your head centered at the tip of your nose, the shorter part of the pony tail is the length of you hair. So to make that particular technique work you should have measured the amount off the shorter part. But actually your hair was too short for that technique anyways. You have to have really long hair for that technique.

If anything, I think that people who cut their own hair (even though it's not the best decision in the first place) should use a technique similar to the standard technique we always see that's used but with the sectioned off bits in the back, not in the front where we can see them because the back is going to be a mess the normal way. Does that make any sense?

I always trim my hair like this. It's never gone too bad. I think it only works with really long hair. I always cut 3-4 inches and it's barely noticeable.

For future reference you're suppose to wet your hair so it stretches to it's maximum length. Then you section off a part of your hair with a comb. Cut off the length you want. Hold a piece of the last section as you move into another section, for reference. Repeat, then cross check. You can texture by cutting vertically into a section
I actually cut my own hair all the time. And yes, you do want to put it into a kind of ponytail. We call it the "unicorn cut" which layers it but also puts a deep "V" in the back. After doing that, I even it up across the ends and then I'm done. My hair is curly; curly hair is a lot more "forgiving" than straight hair can be. You hair looks fantastic after you went to the beauty shop.

I've done this technique and it worked out ok for me. But I have way longer hair then you. Also you didn't have the ponytail placed in thr right spot. It has to be at your hairline and you didn't comb out your hair until it was flat and smooth up against your scalp. That could be why it didn't work.

So I did this a week ago and pretty much ended up with the same result.... when parting my hair on the side there is that shorter piece on the parted side. I haven't had time to go to a hairdresser but after a treatment and some texturising product my normally straight hair is looking really healthy with a nice wave/curl to it so it is blending in quite fine now.. especially with a couple of bobby pins. Think about what hair is going to be cut before trying this. It doesn't have to end in a total disaster, but it might if you cut too much. Use proper scissors and go slow.
