Cohen gave us so much, I saw him in Vancouver on hia last tour. He was incredible, putrting on a high powered show at his age. If you would like a dive into some of his sharpest work, I would recommend The Future, and its title number. Hallelujah is probably his most famous and popular tune but not the greatest.

Leonard Cohen started as a poet in the 1960's he then turned to songwriting. His lyrics are always well thought out. No one else could marry words and thoughts and messages, the way he does. First We Take Manhattan, Suzanne, Birds On A Wire, So Long Maryanne, my favourite - Tower Of Song, and so many more examples of his talent are there to explore.
She does this song better than anyone. To me one of the most Canadian moments I have witnessed was when k.d. lang sang this song in 2010. The best female vocalist we have produced singing a song by the best songwriter we have produced ( no insult meant to Neil Young or Gordon Lightfoot or even to Stompin Tom Connors) at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Her songs, Constant Craving, Miss Chatelaine, and Helpless, as well as her cover of Roy Orbison's Crying are all priceless.
She's also had memorable collaborations with Tony Bennett, Elton John, and the Killers, to name a few.
She came up around the same time as The Tragically Hip, winning the (US) Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Artist in both 1989 and 1993.
Constant Craving was a collaboration with Ben Mink (whose name you may recall for his collaboration with Rush on the 1982 track, Losing It). The two of them received co-writing credits for the Rolling Stones' 1997 song, Has Anybody Seen My Baby. Jagger and Richards were allegedly flabbergasted when first informed of the uncanny similarity of their song to Lang's 1992 song. But Jagger later realized that he had unintentionally nicked it because Lang's tune was a favourite of his daughter's, so he had actually heard it often in the background of daily life.

Totally agree with your assessment and the comparison to FM as well. As an artist, she was actually interpreting the song. It was unique; and she was not trying to be "pretty" or to show off her vocal talent, she was trying to do justice to the depth and the cynicism and pain in that song.

While she does an incredible job on this song, my favorite will always be an older Leonard Cohen singing this live. He puts so much emotion into it and he feels ever word, plus his band and back up singers are the absolute best. I love this song and have been listening to it since it first came out back in 1984 when I was already a huge L. Cohen fan. His poetic sense is unparalleled in my opinion, perhaps Bob Dylan can sit in the same place but if you asked Bob I bet he would say Leonard was better. The actual poem that this song was taken from is 80 stanzas. It is said that Cohen actually wrote about 180 stanzas before settling on 80. Most of his poems are at least 10 stanzas.

Wonderful song. Wonderful singer. Wonderful version.
There are other videos of KD singing this song and all of them are good: e,g, 2010 - Vancouver Winter Olympics; 2020 - Fire Fight Australia.
K D started out very country. She recorded three albums with her band The Reclines then went to Nashville and recorded a solo album "Shadowland" with Patsy Cline's producer Owen Bradley.
This album was a lush, 50s-style Nashville production which really showcased her vocals.
Her second solo album "Ingenue" was a more cabaret style collection.
She has since recorded several albums - solo and collaborative, studio and live.
    A few of my favourites:
"Crying" - live at Wembley 1993

There are 3 versions of Hallelujah
Leonard Cohens : I believe he wrote maybe 100 + verses im not sure he knew how to finish it
This is one song even Dylan marvels at
John Cale : he redefined the song with his cover . He slowed it down and performed it with solo piano on the tribute album
    Im Your Man
Jeff Buckley : the greatest voice of all time
Every other version is a nod to the 3 above
