  • Luca Ascoli discusses the complex history of Jews of Italy. Jews have lived in Italy since ancient times. They were joined by Levantine (from the Ottoman Empire) and Portuguese Sephardim, as well as Ashkenazim who crossed the Alps to escape persecution in Germany. The patchwork of Italian states included Spanish rule in the south (and north) for a time, the Papal states, Tuscany, Venice, Milan, Piedmont, Ferrara and others. A significant Western Sephardic community was established in Livorno, under the rule of the the Medici of Florence and Tuscany. Genealogical records survive for many of the communities.

Shame that he didn't mention that most ashkenazi Jews (Germany, Poland and east europe) came from south italy. But nice video.

Because that wasn’t his topic. And that’s too broad a statement. Ashkenazi Jews didn’t originate in just one place, or time.
