Great video Bill. The canteen trick absolutely works! I've used it at Winter Forge and even did a short video featuring it. Other guys have mentioned keeping the canteens inside their sleeping bag at night as well.

The reverse waterbottle trick is still used in the British Army. This is why the 1958 Ptn waterbottle is still the issue canteen bottle, there is no "artic" or "cold weather" waterbottle. Another tip is to engineer a duct tape "handle" onto the bottom of your waterbottle, make the loop big enough to accommodate the wearing of gloves and/or mittens , this makes it a lot easier to pull your waterbottle out of the canteen pouch, when you are carrying it reversed. @@johndalessandro6433 John , another good tip if you are "winterising" your waterbottle is to add a strong attachment loop to the base of the threads that the bottle top fastens up on. Use bankline or a similar strong cord to create a loop that you can use to attach paracord to, so you can dip your water bottle through a hole in the ice or can use to lower into a stream from the top of an embankment. Obviously give it a good test before going out into the wilds. Lots of folk attach paracord to the bottle top retainer but this can fail when hauling up,a full waterbottle. Our Canteen holders were insulated, I never had water freeze even in Alaska at Northern Warfare School (yes I’m Cold War old). If you get the chance to sleep you don’t take off your LBE and your body heat keeps it from freezing. A two qrt makes a great pillow. When you’re moving they are being agitated so they don’t freeze, remember your canteen is either full or empty, sloshing water violates noise discipline SOP.
I think in part to the thickness of American made cold war canteens you can hardly squeeze them in at all , So the type of container is important. The Chinese knock off canteens are thinner and garbage 🗑️. If it doesn't have a united states contract number from the at least 1980s don't buy it.

Also-one trick we do (in addition to inverting the water bottles) is to heat some water to almost boiling and fill out Nalgene water bottles with it. Screw the tops on good and tight then into a clean hiking sock then they go right into our sleeping bags for the night. Not only does it help keep you warm all night you have a guaranteed thawed coffee water supply in the morning! That warm water bottle at yer feet or between yer thighs (femoral arteries) is a Godsend on those sub-zero nights out in the bush.
Just make sure your bottle doesn’t leak before. I remember using this trick in scouts and one of the boys didn’t tighten the lid all the way… he had a rough night

it also tries out whatever socks you put over the bottle, mountaineers still use this trick
I made a sleeve out of one of those windshield reflective things( cause I'm too cheap to buy reflective from the big box store lol) . It works great so far. Good for keepin' water cold in warm weather and keepin' water from freezin' in winter. I haven't had it down to sub zero Temps yet,but,like you said keep it close to your body and it should be fine

Had Giarda twice in my life. First time it resolved itself in a week or so and was not too bad but had gas and the runs. 2nd time was way worse and I had to be evacuated out of the field to base hospital. STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, SMELL. Bill, your looking more like Rigg’s as time goes on buddy.

I love these canteens because I've had them freeze solid while nearly full more times than I can count. And I've had the same three for over a decade now. Never had a failure. That makes them worth their weight in winter.
My favorite videos are when you're in your natural setting sharing wisdom. Funny. You really know you're getting old when the younger folks are making you wiser. Lol😂
I don't remember seeing this canteen trick. I always kept at least one in my coat or sleeping bag. In the civilian world before and after my time in the Marines I used the old metal ones with the canteen cup.
I had what I believe was Giardia when I worked as a Wilderness Ranger for the Forest Service in the 70's. It was years later before I knew what the illness maybe was. I was designated Wilderness Area miles from a road in high alpine terrain and off the trail. Great weight loss program by the way. Any time you travel in the backcountry your constant companion is a guy named Murphy.
Ya, i went from a buff 175 to a emaciated 145, in a manner of three weeks do to intestinal parasites. If i hadnt been treated in the hospital, in Da Nang, im sure i would have died.

Saigon fell when I was in Marine boot camp. I spent a month as a guard in the Vietnamese/ Cambodian refugee camp at San Onefre Camp Pendlton. I got a good education about the world during those 2 years.
I was shocked to finally see someone demo how to fill there water container properly. It always killed me seeing supposed experts, including Bear Grylls doing wrong and many other YT channels. I caught your (stop, look, listen) during your creep demo. I learned the up side canteen trick from my gramps, he was a WW1 and WW2 vet.

I’ve used this for years. I didn’t learn it in the Army, but I learned it from my Army recruiter!
He also introduced me to not only hiking, but hiking in the winter. No doubt, he learned it while in the Army.

Definitely have iodine tabs in winter as your filter could freeze and become useless.
You can also burry your water bottles in the snow if you have some. Water will freeze under the snow but it takes way longer.

I've had so call survival experts say something to the affect of " ...water freezes at 32° degrees, so ice won't get colder than 32°... [ 0°C ] ".

I use the Sawyer Squeeze System or Grayl Filter System and both are great. Out on a daily or sometimes weekend Patrol like hike pending where I go I just take my Grayl, it's simple, I put a bandanna in the opening of the cup and slowly dip it, when it's filled with water I insert the filter cup and slowly push down, pop the lid and I'm drinking water. On some weekends or extended trips I take my Sawyer Squeeze System utilizing it with several of the Cnoc Outdoor water container bags which allows me to make plenty of clean water. I sometimes still take the Grayl along with me just because I feel better having it with me. I have a way to back wash the filter on the Sawyer System not on the Grayl so I keep the Purifier Pills as a back up for if something ever happens to either filter. I only use the Sawyer in winter cause it's easier to keep filter from freezing.
Thanks, Bill I haven't seen nor heard of anyone doing that trixk in a long time. I was shown by my Dad in the 70s how to do that and it does work. He learned it from his cold weather training in Alaska while in the Army.

As kids we always drank from the streams that 'looked' clean with no probs. I will tell you from experience that a stream with a dead deer in it looks just as clean.....😂😂

In extreme cold, one can carry their canteen on the inside of their jacket in a pocket. Many good parkas as made with this in mind. In addition, carry canteens upside down on long movements as water can freeze when moving or sleeping with LBE on (tactical). Last, I prefer a steel one quart or aluminum civilian bc they can be put into ashes or a fire to heat up or boil water whereas the plastics cannot.
Def works brother good stuff I've done this when I was I. Germany in the 80s I just did a 5 mile ruck over the weekend in -5 degrees my ruck is my patrol pack 25 lbs

Something that I ran into a while back, we pee electrolyte and drink water. That doesn't always end well. Aqua tabs are chlorine, so no help there.
A simple electrolyte is 3 parts sugar to 1 part salt. One teaspoon of that mix per pint. Carry it dry and mix in. It's by no means a complete electrolyte mix but it's pulled me through some long treks. Gatrorade used to make a powdered form that you could use the same way. You may be able to others as well. But if you can't, now you have a basic one that you can make at home.
So, there I was, ranger coming toward me down the trail as I pull out my baggie of powered white stuff. . . 😀

Top, thanks again for the great lesson about the canteen. The high for the day here was 19. Even with two years in Korea and another two in Wyoming during the Cold War, I never learned this.

Great Video Bill, during winter survival in finland, with finish military in 2013, thay learned me this trick. Allso keeping a bottle up side down in your pack and by exream cold on your boddy under your shirt. Allso making fire with cartridge poeder and a iron wire. 🤙🏼🤙🏼

I heard about this trick many years ago (CZcams?) , use it all the time during winter hiking since then. I believe the acronym was SLLS - stop, look around, listen, smell.

I like to fill my canteen with boiling water, wrap it in a scarf, and keep it in my sleeping bag at night as a "heater." (My canteen seals quite well and reliably.)

No, didn't know that trick. Used to have a metal canteen with the boiling water last thing at night, wrap some cloth around it and it went in the sleeping bag, you have your clean water for the AM and a warm sleeping bag. Your trick would be much better in a cold camp situation, good stuff Bill!!!

This may work well because of the shape of the canteen or even the material but I tried this once with a stainless tubular canteen and it cracked the seem as the ice expanded. Thanks for sharing the cool tricks.

At about the 7:50 mark you were chillin and asked about the acronym. I’ve learned it as SLLS or a “seals” halt. Stop, Look, Listen, Smell.
Giardia gave me the water shits for three days, I lost 25 lbs(I am not a heavy man to begin with) and was so dehydrated by the experience that I stooped to drinking scalding hot water because I couldn't purify it fast enough.

Another little known trick is if you are in the snow, put your water bottles right into the snow and they wont freeze. Snow is 90% air and a good insulator

Good video- hydration is important in cold weather. I remember getting issued the old arctic canteens when I was up in Alaska years ago and they and other old school issue items were part of inspections during PLDC (Primary Leadership Development Course) which was 30 days course and you marched everywhere, lots of D&C back when the Army was not woke. The arctic canteens worked well during guard duty when it was very cold. Do troops do guard duty anymore?

Yes, have had giardia and lived to tell about it! Actually was not that bad, just felt like a gut punch for a few weeks till I figured out what the problem was. (was a bit of diarrhea involved as well) Good old Adirondack lakes and streams to blame and my steripen that apparently did not do the job as advertised.... Also-awesome pup you got there my friend! I am on #4 GSD myself.

What a great video, and super message at the end! I really enjoyed this video, Bill. I hardly recognized you with a beard. Lol it looks good. I’m a backpacker and in the backpacking community in cold weather, having your water bottle upside down in your pack while you are hiking, is pretty common. At night we just keep it inside of our bag close to our feet.
I have a question about making sure that the threads of your water bottle have disinfected water on them. I’m 67 and grew up swimming in lakes and ponds that were used heavily by cattle. My quandary is, if you couldn’t get one or one drop or two drops of Contaminated water in your mouth, you wouldn’t be able to swim anywhere in the United States. Like the stream that you got your water from. If it was feeding a lake, would you say that you would not be able to swim in it because while you’re swimming, you’re gonna get drops of water in your mouth. I’m not saying drinking the water, but while swimming you get water in your mouth. I’ve never been sick from swimming and any Lake or pond. I think you have to get enough bugs in you to overwhelm your own immune system. It seems to me, common sense wise, that The amount of contaminants contained in a couple of drops of water wouldn’t be enough to overwhelm your immune system. It’s just a thought. I see lots of people worrying about getting the threads of their water bottle spotlessly clean. Have a blessed week my friend. John.
It’s an attention to detail thing tbh. Never been overly concerned about it.
In the rain 🌧️ when a deer 🦌 or other desired animal is moving, when it shakes the water off it's back it's almost white and gives them away and they do that more often in heavyer raining. When you're senses are bombarded by noise in the rain 🌧️ , sight becomes key 🗝️ , looking up scanning while checking for tracks.
canadian here , if your plastic canteen freezes overnight put a chemical hand warmer in the bottom of the pouch and the canteen in top of the hand warmer. that'll thaw it out.

Back when I was living in the wilderness all the water was so clean you never even thought of a water filter but now days when ever I go into the woods I always take a water filter and water perfection tablets, even if I only plan to be out there for a day. And a small fire kit I made that fits in my pocket.
You know, a lot of people aclimate to drinking creek water. I guess once your bowels get used to it.
I always watched my dog , they would smell someone first, hear someone first. Especially a growl , even in the rain and nosies going on they can see things and movement before i could detect anything, they stop and listen 👂 to and will be directly looking in the direction they heard or smell something, extra sensory detection ! Keeping clothes rotated from a bag with green pine needles helps with scent and not being detected with animals and humans and provides a fresh woody scent that is natural.

Canadian armed forces ( CAF ) taught me that trick, we also Barry our canteens in the snow , mostly the Blk; water Jerry cans cover with snow.
Learned that in 2001 army infantry if we didn’t do that in the winter field problems our platoon daddy would smoke the hell out of us 😂
Do as the Romans did, dig 2 foot deep hole, ground is 7-8C° good winter or summer
