  • This trick is used to get your front map lights to turn on like your dome lights when set to the 'door' function. You'll notice stock 4th Gens do not light up in front when they are unlocked or the doors are opened. This easy wiring trick will help turn the map lights on with the 'door' function. Stock map light functions are still retained and not overridden.
    Tools:
    -wires (I used 18g)
    -taps (x2)
    -wire stripper
    -crimper/pliers to close taps
-10mm to undo bottom cover to access fuse box
-plastic trim remover (not really needed)

Thank you so much for this video!

A cleaner method may be to fish a wire from the center light to the front maps. Will need 2 or diodes splitting power to each map to isolate it so it doesn't back-feed to the rear and retain independent control when you manually turn on the map lights. This also keeps the wiring on FUSED Dome circuit.

I was going to make the same comment. So much more like the GX470 with the diodes and an LED mod. No backfeeding and lighting up the whole cabin any time you want to use either map light. Had this mod with the diodes and LEDs in my '06 since about 2012. Everyone who rides in it that also has a 4Runner is like "Dude! How did you do that? It's so bright in here!" Two 1N4004s and a little wire.

@@godzillafirebox7765 you have any sort of link to a write-up or video of this method you are talking about?

@@andreapiro7098 Sorry - no video or write-up. All I did was take a length of wire, hook it into the wiring that feeds the dome light just behind the sunroof, before the door/off/on switch, onto the wire that feeds the "Door" selection of the switch.
I pulled the wire over the headliner, to the left of the sunroof, and up and over to the opening for the map lights. I made two short jumpers with a 1N4004 diode (sorry - I can't remember if the lights are fed 12v or ground to come on - Toyota usually switches ground for some reason) and soldered one end of each of them together and to the end of the wire coming from the overhead light making a "Y" with two diode leads at the end of the wire.
I then carefully soldered each end of the "Y" to each map light after the switch so that the map lights would come on any time a door is opened. You just have to figure out if the cathode of the diodes need to be connected to the dome light "Door" wire, or to the overhead console lights. Sorry - it's been a decade!
Hooking it up this way makes it so that the dome light switch has no effect on the operation of the map lights, and each map light can be operated independently without any effect on the other map light or the dome light.

@@andreapiro7098 Sorry for taking so long to respond. I wish I did. I just kind of cobbled it up on the spot, but I’m sure many, many others have done exactly the same on here and other forums. I wish that I could be of more assistance.

It's been about 2 years since you posted this clip. If you're still around, do you mind clarifying for me which wire in that bundle in fuse box you tapped. Thx.

Would you mind posting a link for the "taps" you used for guys like me with absolutely no wiring experience?

Jordan Roberts something like this. Make sure it matches with the gauge of wire you're using. I think I used 18g. goo.gl/images/xPvDCB

So, how do actually control the new setup? Meaning, the center dome light has a switch to set to: ON (always on) , Door (on when door is open), and OFF (almost off).
What if you want them OFF all the time.. or ON all the time?

    • @ulrblitzer
      @ulrblitzer  Před 5 lety +2

They will be ON with the doors open. They'll function as normal push on/off with the doors closed.
