    As long as you dance with your lady, whether it's in the kitchen or in the front yard or on the ballroom floor your love will never die. I used to dance with my granddaughter on the front porch buy the wood burning stove and still to this day she loves me to pieces

    Correct! Like all things "Swing Dancing" has evolved from what was first made popular back in the 1940's. I know over "10" different genres of Swing Dancing, each with it's on division, signifying moves, and styles, ALL of them Swing Dancing.
    Just to name a few' Lindy Hop, East Coast, West Coast, Collegiate Shag, Balboa, Rockabilly Jive, Boogie Woogie, Western Swing, Charleston Jazz, Lindy Blues, Swango Blues (more of a crossover though), Ballroom Jive. And the list does go on.

    I believe the term “swing” in swing dancing derived more from the music of the time rather than being defined by the leader “swinging” the follower around. The beauty of WCS, a slotted, rather than circular (East Coast Swing) dance, the basic pattern of which is a six-count pattern against 4/4 time (also ECS) used to be done mostly to music more commonly called swing. However, the beauty of it is it can be adapted to more contemporary music in 4/4 time, and is flexible enough to allow for some interpretation by the dancers. A most important HOWEVER, though, is that the interpretation must occur within the patterns and the count (6 or 8, generally, w/a possible extension to 10), but with an obvious anchor, designating the end of the pattern, w/a new start forward on the 1 of the music measure. Only loose familiarity with the dance would make it difficult to recognize those things are all happening within the interpretation in these videos. Though the interpretation may be spontaneous, there is nothing haphazard about it because it must be done within the structure of the dance. Therefore, it’s a difficult skill to acquire. But, for those of us who love WCS, it is precisely for the fact it allows for some self-expression rather than being locked into a limited series of patterns only - remembering that it still must be within certain structure and counts!

    it's kind of silly to argue if this is swing dance or not. in my opinion, adhering to a rigid form or style makes someone stagnate in what they do. if anything i respect west coast swing because of the premium they place on improvisation. that means that whoever dances west cost and dances it well has to have background in at least several types of dances. that's commendable.

    @wanderer123:
    West Coast Swing is a completely different dance than Lindy Hop.
    Lindy Hop is the father of a whole group of dances in the "Swing" family which include:
    -Balboa
    -Lindy
    -East Coast Swing
    -Jitterbug
    -Jive
    -Carolina Shag
    -West Coast Swing
    Each dance has a completely different aesthetic and dance. However, the roots waaay far back originated in the same area. West Coast Swing, as evidenced in the 2nd half of the video, can be danced to either contemporary or more traditional bluesy slow swing songs. However, West Coast is a smoother, more latin-like flavour of swing dancing and cannot be compared to "traditional" swing; this dance wasn't even in existence at that time!
    If you prefer your traditional swing, look up Lindy Hop instead. :)

    This is the style of West Coast Swing. I wonder if you are thinking of East Coast or Lindy - that's more the style of the 40s and 50s.

  • @ajmeowmeow
    @ajmeowmeow Před 12 lety +3

    But it IS a swing. =P The guy swings the girl and she's keeps moving until the guy swings her back. Just because most people think swing should look like lindy or east coast swing doesn't mean West Coast Swing isn't a swing dance.

  • @RayMailman
    @RayMailman Před 13 lety +1

    @bgredhd Yeah, that's just the way it is with West Coast Swing - it's almost always done to Top 40 music, which typically doesn't swing. Calling it swing dancing is sort of misleading, that way.

  • @Wanderer123
    @Wanderer123 Před 11 lety +1

    Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. I simply reasoned that one would do a Swing dance to 'swinging' music (Swing, Western Swing, Jump Blues, Rockabilly - 4/4 Swing !). Someone wrote here: "the guy swings the girl...", so in that sense West Coast Swing is still a 'swing' dance. But it's not a terribly strong argument... and if you really love American roots music, you would also enjoy the DANCES from the 30ies, 40ies and 50ies.Totally different outlooks...

  • @Wanderer123
    @Wanderer123 Před 11 lety +1

    I do understand your point of view, BUT when you're playing drums or rhythm guitar to swing music (30ies, 40ies) you're not playing just 'A' (some) 'beat'. 4/4 Swing is quite specific and subtle, and it may take some time to really get the hang of it. This would also go for dancing to swing music, I guess. BUT of course when you're of the opinion that anything goes, this won't sound terrible important. Personally I don't like watered- down versions of anything...
