The career tournaments also were fun in that you can entirely skip a race if you placed first in all other races, you can still win the tournament. Used that to avoid hell races like "Summit, Mirrored, Backwards, Night, Weather, 8 Laps" combination.
@@TheNugler There were those tournaments - couple of them on each "level". Each of the had couple of races. To have the tournament ticked off as successful you had to be in top 3 (and better top 1). Since you've got from memory 10 points for winning the race, 8 for second place, 6 for 3rd and then it went down to 1 or 0 at the last place, if let's say the tournament consisted of 6 races and you've won 5 of them you had 50 points, the person behind you if they were always in second place - would have 40. You could try to skip the 6th race, since you would have the first place joined with the player who was always second, assuming that they've won the 6th race. You'd both would have 50 points. But usually the fight for second place was tough - it was rare to have the same person in second place always. And if you wanted you could always make a slower start and bump them out of the road, making them get 3rd place in race 5. Which would make their total 38, while yours would still be 50. So even if by forfeiting last race you gained 0 points, you still led in the tournament. It was useful strategy in more complicated later tournaments. Also from memory sometimes you didn't even need to finish all of the tournaments to have the chance to fight in the last race of the level. Since it was often high stakes challenge (2 drivers, the one who wins keeps their car and gain the car of the opponent), frankly the only limit was financial and time. If you've lost would you have enough money to buy the same car again and upgrade it 3 times? If yes, then you could take the risk. Which was difficult in the beginning of the game since you've only had money for a car and IIRC just enough to buy 1 upgrade, but then you didn't have money to repair the car. Or just had like 1000$ for repairs. And if you've entered the tournament with upgraded car, everyone else would have their upgraded as well. I think it was possible to enter it without an upgrade, win the first race without too much damage and upgrade the car, since the first tournament was 2 or 3 races long. At worst you'd be driving slightly battered car, but upgraded. And enemies couldn't upgrade their cars during the tournament. While you could. Also fun fact - if you went into the tournament with all upgrades, some of your enemies would have non-upgraded cars from one class higher (which closely, but not exactly corresponds to level) So if you had BMW Z3 with Upgrade 3 (B class car), some enemies would be driving Pontiacs without any upgrades (cheapest and weakest car of class A). Mind you - I haven't played the game in over a decade. I would love to, but it doesn't work on my Windows 10, despite trying super patch and nglide etc.
@@jannegrey593 Thanks for the info! I got mine working by downloading the modern patch after installing the game and running it in compatibility mode. It worked, it might work for you. I would give that a try.
@@TheNugler Yeah - after months of trying and even buying new old computer after responding to you I've decided to give it one last shot. And it worked. Not with glide mind you, so it aint that pretty, but it works. And it carshes every half an hour or 45 minutes. But only after races, never during. So as you can see it was 30 points for winning and 5 less for each consecutive place (first 3 are what matters). Though it can be tweaked if there are less opponents. First 2 Tours (big ones - European and High Stakes) are almost a tutorial. Real challenge begins with the 3rd one (World). Like really, really big difference in opponents quality and how tough the tracks are. 2 advices from person that spent over 15 years playing this game: 1. Remember that L is for lights. Always in dry weather click L twice, so that they are fully lit. Normally they are fully lit only at night. In rain only position light are switched on. That combined with backview mirror should help you have better awareness of where you are on the track. Today or tomorrow if I manage to hook up OBS to that I will make a video of me playing the game. I still aced the first race, even though I didn't play in almost a decade. Over 30 seconds better than the worst opponents. On 2 laps of Celtic. If I release this video I might as well release tutorial. I lived with this game for almost half of my life. My whole family played it. So - without light at night on Dolphin Cove - you have no chances unless you "cheat" by changing Gamma a lot. 2. Learn to use handbrake. Super useful in rain. Especially on the Snowy map. Otherwise you won't be even able to take turns with fingers off your throttle. There are at least 4 ways of taking a sharp turn and each is the best in certain conditions. That being said, don't take turns, drive straight if you can. The time measurement of how much in front, behind your enemies are is made on the middle curve of the road - just like enemies drive. You can literally cut corners and in 0.3 seconds take on someone who was 2 seconds ahead of you. There is a lot more, but I'll work on a video later. Finally a game that doesn't brake my PC (Trackmania does - in menu it tries to get as fast FPS as possible. Motherboard shuts down, when CPU temperature is over 105 C - and this happens fast)
@@leruty NFS 4 is the better NFS3, as it includes all tracks from NFS3, better graphics, career mode and car-damage. There is no reason why NFS3 should be better ;)
@@mTwMarco Already said one reason, dynamic music. Also the NFS3 soundtrack isn´t included in NFS4. For me the sound mixing is bad, using VEG on NFS3, sound is fixed there but there are only some smaller patches for NFS4. The NFS3 cop ugrade isn´t available for NS4.

I can understand that people who are used to the graphics of the latest games may wonder what's so special about High Stakes. And I could agree with them, having been exposed to high fidelity graphics myself for over a decade now. On the other hand when High Stakes came out, back then this was really high end. It was an indescribable feeling for it's time.
The PS dual shock had joysticks and rumbled too. It was another commonplace thing today that was a flat out miracle at the time. Such a great game, I spent lots of time on it.

This is the first game I ever modded, Made my own cars, changed tracks by adding routes and secret passages (took me ages), even set the weight of every single traffic vehicle to 1kg so they would fly in the sky as I hit them xD
This is the best NFS till date, also NFS Porsche Unleased / Porsche 2k was the most unique NFS of all. It had classic cars to modern cars. It came with all the info of Porsche and its cars. Apart from that it had awesome music and tracks with very beautiful locations.
I'm torn between this game and the original Hot Pursuit. This one is more complete, but I hate how the transparent windows and car models look compared to III. The wheels are visible on 4, while in III the cars look like hovercrafts (handle like them, too), but still there's some simple elegance on its graphics, that's somehow lost in 4. As if High Stakes tried to look like a next gen game (Sega Model 3 or something like that), but PC hardware wasn't there yet, so the car models end up looking unpolished and sketchy. Hot Pursuit embraces its contemporary hardware environment (mainly the Voodoo board) with happiness and pride, thus producing a simpler but perhaps nicer game. The 2D dashboards, while archaic even for its time, remind us of the original Test Drive, the game that set the roots for the NFS saga

This was one of the first games I discovered mods for. I added so many cars to it and it never missed a beat. Underground II is probably the best NFS overall, but this was absolutely the best of the 'traditional' NFS games. The intro video still makes the hairs stand up.

It's so cool to see the PC version with widescreen, i think the PC version had a few more cars and tracks that the console version didn't have. i don't remember this track at all.

Yes (if memory serves right), as you progress in career mode, you unlock the cars/tracks. I am guessing there are other ways of unlocking them (e.g., cheat code).

I was recently trying to install this game again on my Windows 10 PC, but whenever I run the game, I get an error message saying: Exception caught! Do you know what's funny? That this game, along with all other games from that time, runs in Linux better than it does in Windows. :D Not to mention that Windows 7/8/10/11 won't run 16-bit games, such as Twisted Metal 2, whereas Linux runs them just fine. :D

I've played this game a lot with my vodoo3 3000 along hot pursuit 2 from 2002 and Porsche. This were the best NFS games ever made.

The cops were pathetic on the pc versions of High Stakes and NFS 3. On the PS1 versions the police chases are really intense and challenging

PC version have better graphics than PS1.
@@Victor_2000s PS 1 is more real and its almost a Simulation. From what I've seen on this video and my experience playing.

@@Willnottcomply3 If you want simulation just play Gran Turismo. High Stakes on PS1 is a failed attempt just by mixing realistic physics on an arcade setting. That just doesnt work.

is high stakes, look the main menu and the soundtrack is different from the nfs 3, the PC version of High Stakes have the tracks of the NFS 3 too!
