    I was feeling nostalgic and while doing laundry, quotes and rotating my tires (I am frugal.. AKA Cheap Ol' SOB) I went back to your 2017 Episodes 60 thru 65. I reckon it was due to a conversation that I was drawn into last week... either or... Your definition/explanation of Heaving To and the subsequent explanation of actions and forces while Hove To was the best I have seen. I loved the visuals. They were very entertaining and informative in a "Crayola" sort of way. I don't see a lot in the sailing Vloggers talking about seamanship. Backing sails are as important as making way. And as you two have weathered that and other storms... I wanted to say Thanks.
    As for the whaling, as one of your followers commented, I too am of mixed feelings. I am glad that we have moved past this time in our history. I have been in the presence of humps, killer, sperm and Narwhals...up close and scary personal. Those animals are glorious in their majesty. And they gave us so much.
    I could go into a diatribe of transitions... blubber to petrochemical, sail to steam (coal then petrochemical) and the worst of all.... Paper to plastic. The last, I believe, is an example of the short sighted, yet well meaning, attempts to improve and better our environment. in the 60's and 70's we had paper grocery bags that were reusable, biodegradable and sourced from a renewable crop... TREES... They grow like corn. Now we have oceans full of plastic debris and over flowing landfills.

      We sure have come a long way but we always like to teach something in every episode. I learn by reading and doing, but it would really be nice to see it in action as well! Most of the topics covered in the videos are things I had looked for but could never find back when I was still reading. Glad it can be of help to you, and we are all still learning :)

      I teach or as one of my "kids" has termed it... I provide an opportunity for experiance. I can be an A**hole for safety and they learn to master, question and improve. Kids with autism, kids that are being raised by their elderly grandparents, adults that have never had access to a real world role model and all forms in between. I am not perfect by any means, but watching people take information and building self confidence is something you just can't put a price on!
      I will be using your definition of Heaving To "Verbatim" .
      One of my favorite things is to take folks out on the lake or river and hand the wheel or tiller to them. The glee on faces is something... I just went wordless... That joy is awesome.

    Oh the fun of traveling abroad. The kids were in Italy. Note to self, don't go to Italy. Flores looked to be a nice place and you got lots of great photo's to paint. Loved the panoramas and vistas. Now you can always look at the photos while your out at sea and talk about all the fun you had there.

      Rigging Doctor I remember the family planning on going up to San Francisco from Los Angeles taking the pacific Coast Hwy. Well, we got a bit farther than the Hearst Castle until we gave up and turned around. We enjoyed many stops on the way up, but, it got to be a winding, foggy, cliff hugging drive with loggers trailing their redwoods like bats out of hell as they knew the road like the backs of their hands. My mom was having none of it. 😂

      Rigging Doctor So, the falls don’t dry up in the summer? Oh! And a couple of other things, heights never used to bother me too much, until now. Those videos overlooking the cliffs from a selfie stick or a drone freak me out. They really make me squirm. And running on that slippery, rocky trail so close to the edge? No thank you. I’m not going to name names, but, she knows who she is.😂

      I agree on having a bed vs having no bed, but this place touts itself as being a fancy hotel! Be true to yourself, and be honest to tourists that are booking these rooms just off of descriptions.
      The B&B we were in was wonderful and much cheaper than this hotel! I feel bad for those who pay all that money to stay there.

    I'm so conflicted about Whaling. Defiantly so difficult because the lowly whalers were just doing a very hard job with amazing skills and seamanship. This was matched to the fragility of the equipment they had. Once the air/steam powered harpoon came it it all changed and the rate of harvesting when thru the roof. I'm so glad it has stopped, but it's a shame the skill of the whalers could not translate well into other industries.
    The oil( actually a sort of wax) from sperm whales was actually from the Spermaceti organ in its head and body holding over 500gal of extremely pure lubrication oil even used by aerospace as it was better than any petroleum based oil. Unfortunately the saddest use for the oil was for 'rich folks' to use for 'oil lamps' as it has a bright odorless flame. Used once and done. Better uses were oil for dampening compasses and the like. It was banned for use as an additive in automatic transmissions in 1972 in USA leading to an 8 fold increase in trans failure. Final total ban on sperm whale oil sales was as late as in 1987 with the international ban on whaling. ( yes I did look some of this up). Apparently the oil is actually used in the whales sound transmission and communication. Even dolphins have it in smaller amounts but it's not settled science.
    Very interesting looking industrial museum , my favorite kind.
    I was wondering when the really bad weather was coming! You found it.

      Oh...love those shots of the variable pitch turbo props. They change pitch so much! Cheers Warren

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor  Před 5 lety

      Apparently, the Azorians used hand harpoons up until the end! These guys were BAD@$$ standing on the bow of the little boat and throwing the harpoon by hand!!
      Mechanized whaling did really tip the scales in a bad way though. It’s like turkey hunting to turkey farm production numbers!

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor  Před 5 lety

      I greatly enjoyed my seat. I was perpendicular to the blades so I could easily see the blades changing pitch.
      Landing was awesome when the blades reversed pitch and brought us to a halt!
      I wonder though: since the blades are moving forward through the air, are the blades simply creating a giant low pressure behind them which pulls the plane backwards and slows the plane down rather than the blades actually acting as a fan and pushing the air forward ahead of the propeller.
      In other words: the air in front of the blades is not being pushed forward and the propeller is merely creating a low pressure area behind them which is creating a ton of drag and stopping the plane ;
      as opposed to the air in front of the propeller being pushed forward and excerpting a backwards push.

    • @CheersWarren
      @CheersWarren Před 5 lety

      Rigging Doctor Great question! As we know the drag of any prop can be significant! He seems why the WW11 bombers with a shot up engine had to feather the prop. On a modern variable pitch prop they are actually creating reverse thrust, increasing rpm after adjusting prop pitch. This is one of the reasons they are so good at short hauls and on short runways . Much more efficient reverse than 'turbo jets' that can only redirect the air flow like a jet ski with deflectors. And Yes I researched an answer.!
      We used to have a variable pitch prop in our family boat with a Sabb diesel, they came with them so no gearbox/transmission. Reverse was not great but it worked. It did not unfortunately feather out completely so we used to hide it behind the deadwood.
      Cheers Warren.

    Ah well in the good old USA if your flight is cancelled due to weather you are on your own. Didn't use to be that way but in the interest of profits the airlines decided to heck with you. Best be glad that your flight cancelled. That would have been the ride of your life taking off and attempting to land in 60 to 80 knot winds!

      @Josef_R Před 5 lety

      Why do you expect airlines to be responsible for weather? Should the person who built their boat be responsible also if the weather is too bad to sail? Why is personal responsibility so offensive to you that you have to badmouth an entire country over it?

I have watched all of your videos and these are my comments on this one: The best part were the road trips where we could see the local community but you fast forwarded and accomplished nothing. Sorry your hotel wasn't a 5 star but you were warm and dry; Here in USA you would have been sleeping in a chair in the airport. Tell Maddie to wash that blue paint out of her hair, she is married to a doctor now and not supposed to be a hippie. There was a beautiful little town at 1:56 what was its name and history. You skipped over much of the island's history that might make me want to take a trip to see it for myself. I will keep watching your videos and be glad to see you back on the boat once more.
