  • Herby and Maddie return to the states to visit their family and pets for the holidays. While back in the states, Herby works full time as a dentist to earn money which allows them to go cruising. They also begin the process of getting their residency visas in Portugal in hopes that this would then allow them to sail through the rest of Schengen without incidence.
Baltimore, Maryland is a nice change of pace from the cruising world!

My husband and I really love you guys! We are learning a lot from you and your experiences. It's making our cold Calgary, Canada winter a little more palatable that is for sure! Thanks very much for your advice and wisdom, we will be sure to use it. Making enough to sustain this phase of our lives is key and you have good ideas! Love your senses of humor, My brother Al Tattersall and his wife Lucinda Lindsay are out there somewhere crossing the Pacific to get to Hawaii then Nanaimo Canada where we will all meet up. All the best!

That christmas themed menorah is nothing, worst thing was while shopping for passover seeing a ham with signage that said ,"Perfect for Passover!" Some retail stores are totally clueless. On a similar note, I feel ya when it comes to bureaucracy with embassys, namely that the closest one to me that I have to deal with is over 800 miles away.

You should see the hoops Australians have to jump through to get a USA visa. Yes we need to apply online. if you need to speak to someone on the phone to find out which form to use, or confirm what visa type you need they will answer the phone but only after you enter your credit card number so you can be billed by the minute. When you get your appointment you need to go to the consulate which could be many hours by plane, depending where you live. I don’t think any government makes it easy.

    • @RiggingDoctor

    • @MyshaM.
      @MyshaM. Před 5 lety

No. It's probably something people do in the credit card world; not really interesting for me. But I figured someone would probably see them as the keys of the kingdom and therefore something they'd not want to lose control over.
Thanks for that bit of explanation.
Anyway, the point was that a lack of a credit card would make the procedure you sketched more difficult.

WOW! What a hassle you had to go through. The guy at the consulate had a $#%^&* attitude. He should know his accent is very strong. Wish we could have seen the last return trip after the trip to the FBI visit. What kind of hassle did you go through at the FBI and was there a charge for getting the paperwork you needed for the consulate?
Nice to see the "adventure" shall we say, of what goes on behind the scenes of the cruising lifestyle.

    • @RiggingDoctor

It was a nightmare! Worst of all is when we did jump through all the hoops to navigate their website and make an appointment, they didn’t have us on the list. I had to show him the confirmation email they sent to prove I had an appointment and to get in!
FBI check and prints is done by a company that charges $90 per person. It’s right by the consulates in the Davis Building (I think on the third floor, can’t remember but the guy at the entrance can point you in the right direction). They get everything sent off and ready, the results arrive by email in a few days.
Fun fact, to get an appointment with the consulate, you have to enter your Portuguese Resident Number, which I don’t have and that is why I’m making the appointment! The number is one digit shorter than a passport number, so I just put that number in save the last digit.
Such a mess, but hopefully we will hear soon.

Hm - I am from Austria/Europe. As far as I know you have 90 Day free to stay in a Period of 180 Days.
But: Kroatia is not Part of Schengen but Member of EU. Albania is not Part of EU and therefore not in Schengen. Turkey is in the Med, not EU and not Schengen. Also Marokko and Tunisia.
If you stay, lets say 15 Days in Spain another 15 in Italy, than 30 Days in Marokko and Tunisia and then 30 Days in Greece - you was in total 60 Days in Schengen, but 90 Days in the Med.
Then for a Cruise along the Kroation Islands to Turkey - you can easely fill up 180 Days without staying more than 90 Days in Schengen Territory.
This could be a Workaraound and still be legal.

Hey,...Herbie,....you’ve got to look forward and not back. A boat, however stored is still getting older. The next thing you both are going to do is have some kids,........ie.....expand your needs, and the space to house them. All boats are lovely shapes but they are also practical things that serve a set of circumstances. The boat we have was the 4th Southerly bought as new by a Senator of a Department (state) of France. Each boat he bought was larger than the previous as his family grew. We bought it from his son, as the father had passed away some years earlier, who had purchased a newer smaller modern Southerly boat (which by some measures is larger than the longer older boat) to fit his family reality and their sailing style. We move on as we grow. One of my fondest quotes was a commenter to Mothership Adrift, an ex Naval Officer, who said (paraphrased) “I sailed the world with my family, the kids have grown, the boat is gone, my wife has passed away,...but the memories, oh those wonderful memories”. Its the memories we hold close and dear.

Hey Herby and Maddie why not turn your boat into a dental clinic and sail the south Pacific and Indian ocean where people can't afford basic dental care and have a win win relationship with the locals....they will provide you with the means to go around like food fuel and a few money and you will give them dental services for little money or goods. This way you may sail for years while you will be doing something to be proud for.

    • @RiggingDoctor

Actually a menorah has 9 candles and does not have to be gold. The extra one is called the shammash and is used to light the others. Hanukkah lasts 8 nights, not 7. Being Jewish, Im pretty sure I know what a menorah looks like. It may be coincidence, but that was indeed a menorah whether they intended it or not. It was humorous

On a serious note have you ever thought about becoming a citizen of a EU. country?
It's not as difficult as you may think. I'm from the uk. and I have a property in Bulgaria.
I believe that anyone from any country in the world can buy a property here, then apply for a EU. citizen I.D. card, which lets you travel to any EU. country without a passport or visa.
I believe that the ID. card is valid for the lenght of time your medical insurance is valid.
At the moment property and property taxes are inexpensive in BG.
I can give you an example of my property tax for a year $ 20
Don't believe what you read about BG. 98% of Bulgarians own their homes some own 3 or 4. They are very well educated compaired to the rest of europe. Most Bulgarians your age speak 2,3,4, or more languages all young people speak at least 2.
Don't worry about the cost of housing, everything would probably cost 2 months salary.
It's just a thought but I hope it helps you both to live out your dreams and ambitions.
