- In the story called “The blind men and the elephant”, six blind men encounter an elephant for the first time. Each of them touches a different part of the animal and their variety of perspectives leads to different assumptions of what an elephant is. This story depicts how reality can be perceived in many ways and that there is almost always more than just one ultimate truth. Like this metaphor, culture is a concept which is not easy to define. So what exactly is culture? How it is formed? What elements are included in the culture? In this video, I am going to answer these questions for you.
Using, "The Blind Men and the Elephant", was a great analogy to use when discussing culture within international business. I love the fact that it pretty much illustrates how different perceptions or perspectives can alter our understanding of a certain culture and how important it is to easily navigate through the global market.
Thank you for sharing this video. Coming from a hispanic family and living in America, culture has been something I have learned to appreciate and understand how these differences shape who we are and what we believe in. I like the example given that in some cultures it is impolite to not shake hands with everyone in the room. at a young age, I was always taught to greet everyone present in the room and to make sure everyone was addressed with a handshake or hug before sitting. to think that other cultures don't require that definitely opened my eyes into learning other cultural differences.
I appreciate how this video goes into the different aspects of culture like landforms, climate, and natural resources and explains how that affects culture.
I love this video. At the beginning of my collegiate career, i took an anthropology class and loved it. I’ve always been curious about people and why we do the things we do and understanding culture is a necessary step.
This was one of my favorite videos to watch this semester. I truly like learning about different cultures, and why the people from the cultures hold the beliefs that they do. I believe that to successfully manage a business, you need to have a workplace that embraces different cultures, as different cultures bring new ways of thinking. New ways of thinking can lead to innovation, which leads to success. Understanding different cultures is critical, as not every culture has the same beliefs, what may be okay in one culture, may be an insult to another culture.
This might have been my favorite video because I just find learning about different cultures to be fascinating. The way that a lot of cultures have many similarities shows how much more connected we are than we have previously thought. It's also interesting to see how something that seems so normal in one culture can be completely different to another.

This is the second time I've watched this and I still see value in it. This video gives a great introduction to culture, especially to students who don't have a large understanding of it. Cultural plays a vital role in everyday life and also a huge role in business.
I've always found culture incredibly fascinating. One thing about your videos that I really enjoy is the specific examples and facts you give us. Always seems to engage me into whatever the topic may be!
This was one of my favorite videos in the course since it taught me not just about culture but also how it affects the corporate world. I found it fascinating to learn about the etiquette and customs of many cultures, as well as languages, both unspoken and spoken, and how body language accounts for the majority of how we express ourselves. It's important to understand how some activities are prohibited in some countries.
As someone who grow up in a different culture it is so refreshing to learn about others cultures. It is so cool to see if we share any similarities to other cultures and to see it from their point of view.

This was one of my favorite videos during this course because not only did I learn a little more about culture but how this also can affect the business world. I thought it was interesting learning about the manners and customs of certain countries, languages, like unspoken and spoken such as how body language makes up most of how we imply ourselves. It is good to be aware of how some things aren't allowed in certain countries.
I have always loved learning about culture and traveling has always been a huge part of my life. Learning why people do different things depending on where they live has always been so fun to me. I am from Utah and when I moved to Tyler that was a culture shock for me. Even though I was still in the United States it was so much different than where I grew up. I also love the mountains and moving somewhere where it is all flat was such an adjustment to me. During this move it really showed me how cultures can be so different even if they are not that far away. I was grateful for the experience and for this video being so educational.

It is essential when having business meetings with people from different cultures to make sure you understand their cultural norms so that you don't offend them and lose a business transaction because of ignorance.

Each culture can view things vastly differently, so it is important to have an understanding of other cultures. This way if you meet someone from a different culture you will already have somewhat of an understanding of their values. The differences described between cultures were described perfectly. I think the example of a simple common gesture in the US that can get someone arrested in the Philippines really shows how important understanding different cultures is, especially when it comes to traveling. This video is so important. Learning that there are key differences in every culture enables us to understand that geography, language, and values partake in those differences. What is "normal" in a country may be seen as disrespectful in another country. Everyone's "normal" is different, so we have to educate ourselves on different cultures when traveling to a country with that culture.

Culture plays a huge role in our lives, personal and business. Watching this video reminded me of when I took a humanities and philosophy course. We studied the different cultures and lifestyles around the world. I’ve always found it so cool and unique how others live in comparison to mine. I am one to question the lifestyle others live in different cultures. It’s crazy how some cultures interpret things one way, but in others they may interpret them in a complete opposite way.

I did not consider culture to be affected by climate and environmental factors, but after being informed it makes totally sense as to why that would shape so many cultures. It is polite, respectful, and thoughtful to touch up on the cultural background of companies or businesses you might be working with to make sure you will not accidentally do or say something offensive and to understand their perspective more.
When I think about culture, I think most about values, language, & religion, and sometimes forget there can be a natural geographical aspect of culture. Social stratification is something that I have seen in society, but did not know the word for it. This made me remember some points you made in your "Why the rich get richer and the poor stay poor" such as the large income gap being hard to close for a variety of reasons. I think sometimes people have a hard time defining culture, but it was well done here.

As a person that has lived in two differnt countries and having adapted to two differnt cultures, I can ultimately say this video really helped me categorize some of the differences to directly compare the two. Having lived in both the US and Mexico, although the countries are neighbors, the two cultures and people very largely vary and have definitely given me a good perspective for life that I now apppreciate as I grow older. It is not necessary for something to be a different nation to have their own culture or a different culture from those around them.

I find it interesting that people in the US resort to a handshake when they are introducing themselves to a new individual whereas people in Mexico greet everyone with a handshake no matter the occasion.
