Yes, they could have chosen not to shoot him, but that would be gambling the safety of everyone else around. Of course many people would love human life to be valued more, but you need to understand that Brooks put himself, the cops, and everyone nearby into a more risky, potentially life-threatening situation. If he valued his own life and others, then he should have just complied with the police. His DUI case was likely a misdemeanor but the moment he assaulted a cop and took the taser, he made his case a felony. Again he made his own situation worse.

If the cop thought Brooks was a deadly threat and could have killed him, the cop wouldn't be chasing him but would have found cover and called for backup. Former Acting U.S. AG Whitaker said the shooting was unjustified. Everything that happened is on video and anyone with a brain can see a fleeing man being shot in the back. This is not hard. It is that simple really. All this will only increase racism in the future towards black people. I am not sure if the black community's spokespersons are stupid, or just want to actually try to be above everyone else, and eventually get alienated in the grand scheme of things. The black community has always been a divided mess, and now they successfully brought this mess to everyone else. I do think the whites who joined the cause will soon realise what they are defending, and go back to caring for another cause (I guess global warming again).
We have an unheard minority who are getting enraged by the current pathetic attempts of a divided, victimised race to gain more privileges than they already have: Asians. They are not complaining, as they never do, and go about their business. What happens when that taser connects to the officer, and then the suspect is able to get the officers firearm to use against the officers and then any civilian he chooses? Maybe I'm grasping straws here but I think in the moment the cop saw a man pointing what looks like a gun and shot him in response without thinking. I've had 2 DUI's. From certain perspectives, a DUI is one of the worst charges you can get, at least for someone like me who is white. Each DUI costs about 15k in my state/county. And you dont even have to be "drunk", just above the limit. Here I'll explain the financial aspect of just a 1st DUI offense:
      $3000 decent lawyer
$2000 for a mandatory alcohol program for half a year (differs by state)
$2000 for an ignition interlock for your car for half a year
$1500 fines and court fees for your DUI charge
$5000 for a private drug abuse clinic (most lawyers recommend you sign up to a drug rehab program prior your trial so that later you can tell the judge "look I am treating my alcoholism")
$1000 for probation (in my jurisdiction, you actually have to pay for being on probation)
5-10 days of jail for 1st offence
Hundreds of hours spent on commute to drug rehab centers every other day, etc
DUI's are indeed very, very serious in this country. Such convictions carry a large financial burden and limit your ability to live for about 1 year. But I am white, not sure if blacks face similar harsh repercussions
