  • I love my Fat-bike, I love Salsa but it seems apart from a color change the 2017 Mukluk is a better spec than the 2018 version
No frame changes, just group set

Electric gloves would work great ! 20 " drop void warranty killed carbon frame for me.

And by the way, i have Sram brakes on my Norco Sasquatch and they are noisy as hell... I m trying another brand of pads to get rid of the noise. I ll let you Know if it works!

What’s your opinion on 5” fat bike tires vs. 4.5” ones? Are the former “too much”? I want a Canyon Dude, but they don’t go to 5”.

    Have you run 27.5?

  • @climbingholdreview4614

Ali; it makes no difference really; 4.5 is basically 5... just drop the pressure down when you’re riding in really soft conditions

Decent review, though I think it could have been about half as long and still covered all the same topics with some additional planning/notes. I also found it odd with you not looking at the camera - you are always looking just to the side. This is most obvious during the seated part that starts around 2:25. And what is the annoying fan noise in the background? BTW, you stated the bars are 650 wide; I think you meant 750. :)
As to 2017 vs. 2018 Mukluk, I think you've got it dead wrong. The 2018 GX Eagle destroys the 2017 GX.
    - Weight: The '18 is over 2 pounds lighter (27 lb. 5 oz. vs 29 lbs 7oz)!
    - Fork: 2018 has a carbon fork, which of course not only helps with weight, but dampens the ride. I think you may be wrong about the fork on the 2017 being carbon, as stated at 5:40. It sounds like aluminum when you tap it, and the Salsa website states "Salsa Bearpaw" for 2017, but "Salsa Bearpaw Carbon" for 2018. And they clearly look different. Additionally, if you go to their fork page, you see the "Bearpaw 150," which looks just like what is on the 2017 and it is stated there as being aluminum. The Bearpaw Carbon is not on their fork page, leading me to believe it may be brand new.
    - Groupset: GX Eagle is night and day above GX given the extra rear gear (12 vs. 11) and much wider range (10-50 vs. only 11-42 (not even 11-46) on the 2017).
    - Cranks: At 12:50 you state that the RF cranks are "for sure" better, but I think that's debatable. The cranks on the 2017 are RF Aeffect, which is lower in their line. It sells for about the same price as a GX Eagle Crankset and they weigh about the same too. I'd say it's a toss up at best.
    - Brakes: 2017 has SRAM Level, whereas 2018 sees an upgrade to SRAM Guide R, which are definitely better.
    - Saddle: 2017 was WTB Volt Comp, which is the lowest level Volt, outfitted with steel rails. 2018 gets an upgrade to the Volt Pro, which has Cromoly rails, and shaves 90 grams.
    - Seatpost: 2018 gets upgraded to carbon from aluminum. As you mention a carbon seat post isn't going to save you a ton of weight, but it has few negatives other than cost, and little weight savings can add up.
    - Tires: Like the cranks, this one is debatable, but I would take the 2018 with Maxxis Minions (120 tpi) over the 2017 with 45NRTH Dillinger (60 tpi).
    - Price?: I'm not sure what the 2017 GX MSRP was, but at $3,499 the 2018 GX Eagle is a lot of bike for the money.
So for me, this all adds up to a vastly superior 2018 model.

Kevin....I think you took commenting to a whole new level. Good God man, how much time did you spend trying to correct this video with your own opinions and camparisons?! Leave the guy alone and stop being such an anal critic. I bet you've been single for so long is because you analyze and comment on everyone else's life. If you have any friends at all, I hope to God they aren't as anal at commenting or trying to correct on someone else's happiness. 🤮
