  • Thinking of getting fat this Winter? The Salsa Mukluk fat bike should definitely be on your radar. I'm glad my buddy Wade let me geek out and unbox it with him. Priced at $1,600 for the Shimano Deore build, it packs some serious bang for the buck. If you're curious about the carbon builds, I discuss those too... Pray for snow :) #fatbiking #salsamukluk

    I've been riding my Mukluk 3 year-round in Southwestern Colorado for just over 6 years - it's been great, still solid as a rock, I love it. Snow riding has improved my overall MTB skills so much - snow riding is so much fun, and the solitude is amazing. My summer riding buddies just don't understand - they say it's too much hassle getting dressed to go riding in the winter, and it's too cold, etc. It's no different from XC skiing (which they do, but can't see the similarities), but a ton more fun - you can go a lot faster, and you actually have brakes! Endless fun ...

    • @DirtyTeethMTB
      @DirtyTeethMTB  Pƙed 3 lety +2

      Yep, Medium Rick - I did plot that route out :) - sometimes it's great riding, and sometimes it's tons of HAB... depends on season, weather, and motorized use... ps - the pic in the video is from Paoha Island in the middle of the lake... canoed out there once with my fat bike... it was amazing, like riding on the moon (or at least what I imagine it to be)... unfortunately, USFS came across my blog and said riding a bike on Paoha is illegal and asked me not to advertise it... but bikepacker.com still has the article up if you're curious: bikepacker.com/paddle-pedal-paoha-island-mono-lake-ca/

    • @DirtyTeethMTB
      @DirtyTeethMTB  Pƙed 3 lety

      The Gefster - Thanks for watching and commenting :) both are versatile, depends on your riding style... Mukluk is more for long days in the saddle, bikepacking, etc... a more upright, comfy geometry... it can accept 5" tires on 100mm rims (26")... so can be super floaty on soft, deep snow. Beargrease is more like a cross country race bike with fat tires... more aggressive, racey geometry... more for riding groomed nordic trails and going fast... both are killer bikes, and both can hang on rough trails and accept a squishy fork and plus wheels to make a one bike quiver for summer singletrack... hope that helps a little... ride on!

    Thanks for the review. Any thoughts on how you would compare the build specs on the 2020 Mukluk with the SRAM Eagle SX versus the 2021 Mukluk with Deore 11?

    • @DirtyTeethMTB
      @DirtyTeethMTB  Pƙed 3 lety

      Hi R W - 2020 v 2021 are super similar builds... my wife's mtb has eagle nx and it's great for an entry-level 12speed setup... obviously it has one more gear than the deore 11... the weight is very similar... and some people prefer the more "definitive" feel of Sram shifting over the softer touch of Shimano - both are great builds for the price IMO - hope that helps!

    • @DirtyTeethMTB
      @DirtyTeethMTB  Pƙed 3 lety +1

      I think the Farley has more geometry more like a Salsa Beargrease... and they both come spec'd w/ 27.5 wheels... both are great for firm/groomed snow/ trail riding... the Mukluk is more relaxed, comfy for longer days in the saddle, multi-day bikepacking adventures, and flotation over softer snow - all are great bikes, and if you want a dropper and suspension fork, the Farley 7 is up your alley... just depends on the terrain/your riding style

    • @DirtyTeethMTB

      Hi Brian, thanks for commenting... I haven't ridden a Farley 5, and not that familiar with it... but after checking out the specs on the website - looks like a pretty sweet bike for the buck... seems like it's more oriented towards firm snow/groomed, and geometry more similar to Salsa Beargrease, as well as the 27.5 wheel spec... whereas the Mukluk is for longer days in the saddle/multi-day bikepacking adventures, floatier on softer snow... I like that the Farley comes with a dropper post, but don't like the 1x10 drivetrain - anyhoo... depending on what terrain/your riding style... seems like a great option :) - Ride on!

    That extra price of China manufactured parts & frames is hurting. You'd think more companies would begin manufacturing in USA, or South America. Just received a Wren fork for the 2021 Mukluk deore. Bike brands give you the lamest & dullest frame colors. Keeping the Terrene 29x2.8 tires throughout the year. And today, with Snowstorm Olive over us, I've installed the Cakeeater studded. Nothing prevents me from my obsessive after-dinner ride.
