I have to give my vote to “The Last Airbender” live-action Shyamalan movie.
Although, unexpectedly, it has also brought me great entertainment for 13 years and counting: through the continued posting of fan rants, video essays, and despairing reaction content. Maybe the real joy was the misery we shared along the way.
This is the first film that came to mind for me😂. It's a terrible thing.
A terrible thing at the height of popularity no less. One of those perfect childhood storms of disappointment.

The final seasons of Game of Thrones was my most disappointing media. I was so invested for so long and so pumped to know how it all ended to be so let down. Great episode guys!

I wonder why Rings of Power got an honorable mention when the Amazon Wheel of Time didn't when they both rated WoT lower than RoP.
Wow for once I’m on the same page with Dan. Dragonfruit is the most overpriced beautiful fruit that is bland as heck.
But they CAN be super delicious. I don't personally know what separates the flavorful ones from the ones that taste like water. But every now and then you get one that tastes amazing though!
Definitely agree with his take... Cool fruit in everything but taste (but also, it's not that it tastes bad, it's just kind of there)
That's because they start losing their sweetness and flavor as soon as they're picked. What we get in grocery stores doesn't taste the same as a freshly picked dragon fruit
I always liked them but I had some in China and there wasn't a trace of that blandness. They were sweet and juicy, I literally don't eat them anymore because the ones here just don't compare to that.

Quantum of Solace is becoming one of those key stories of the writters strike. The main lesson is the importance of writers being on set throughtout production and how much value they generate. The initial script was done before the strike so they tried to go ahead with filming with the director and daniel craig rewriting the script. If the film had on set writers that were paid their value that film would be different
I don’t even dislike it. Had some really amazing and memorable scenes, like the opera. Such a cool set piece.
My main take away from Phantom Menace leaving the theatre was that they had thrown in the whole pod racing thing just to make a video game out of it. :D
Yeah but that video game was a defining feature of my elementary school years.
The Pod Racing thing was the best part of the whole movie because there’s basically no dialogue.
And the video game was awesome!
Honestly, The Phantom Menace isn't bad. There are a few issues here and there, but anyone born after 1990 actually liked that movie.

To the newly-processed inmates of Food Heist Prison, they’re told by Milk Mafia to call the other gang the Gator Goons. No no no. Them boys will be quick to show you their name is Gator Gourmand. Taking after their Cajun roots, it’s a double entendres for both being exceptional foodies and Cajun slang for being viciously greedy.
I worked on golden compass movie vfx and believe it or not they screen tested the ending with the kid dying and based on that test they changed the movie to not end with a kid dying. Surprised they didn’t see that coming.

I’d give an Honorable Mention to A View to a Kill. Even if the movie is mid and the lyrics are nigh on incomprehensible, it still slaps
The HBO series for His Dark Materials is amazing. Definitely worth a watch.
Biggest media disappointment was WoT season 1. Absolutely crushed my hopes for the books to become popular and as well known as GoT. I felt actually sick with how bad some of it was.
The half episode info dump by Moraine, 3 episodes into it.
Lack of main character presence.
Two main girls being excluded from the entire season.
And their portrayal of Mat's family, to try and force him to be more likeable. (As if Matrim Cauthon needs that).
The most disappointment I’ve ever experienced is the BBC adaptation of The Watch. I knew it would be rough once Sir Terrys daughter bailed out of the project, but Wow…
The BBC destroys everything it touches - unaccountable left wing Metropolitan propaganda machine funded to the tune of £4bn by grossly unfair, near unavoidable poll tax. You have to pay even if you watch zero BBC 😮

Glad to know ahead of time. I love everything Pratchett did. And hearing his family had nothing to do with the show let's me know what I am in for.
@@rriggs6547 I really, really wanted to like it. I didn't care about gender flipped characters, modernizing the city, and I was 100% willing to accept the difficulty of transferring mediums trying to make a show work. But what they did to Vimes and especially Cheri was a travesty. There's absolutely a gender identity discussion that would work beautifully with the character as written in the books and provide a nuanced and thoughtful conversation, BUT THEY MADE HER TALLER THAN CARROT DAMNIT. Game over man, game over.
You are both correct about the Live and Let die song. Originally done by Paul McCartney and Wings for the movie then was later covered by Guns N Roses.

An old Disappointment of mine is what they did to The Dresden Files. Man I love that book series, I want them to try again with another show.
My disappointment were the actual Dresden books, heard so many good things and then didn't enjoy them
You have convinced me to embark on a Bond marathon, I forgot how amazing some of them are!
Maybe it's because I'm about half a generation younger, but there is an iconic disappointment that I was really surprised wasn't mentioned: Eragon. It was the first time I can remember leaving a theater legitimately sad... My friends and I immediately went to drown our sorrows in Cold Stone ice cream and dunk on every aspect of that dumpster fire.
I'm so glad I didn't see that movie in theaters. I got to be annoyed in the comfort of my own home while my mom watched my irritation in confusion
That's the only movie I ever saw with my college housemates. We never went to the theaters together again. Some ways in, I was like, "This is ... this is just Star Wars," and then the Vader expy kills the Kenobi expy and I was no longer interested.
If you can find it, the purple dragonfruit has more flavor than the white one. We love them here in Taiwan.
Kinda surprised that Twin Peaks didn't show up, what with the talk of non-comedies falling off in season 2. Corporate started shoving their weight around, Lynch walked out, and season 2 collapsed until Lynch came back at the end, at which point it was too late. Luckily season 3 is one of the greatest seasons of TV in the last 10 years.
Love and Thunder had so many massive wasted opportunities, the least of which was the entire god butcher arc. Taika's a fun guy but an awful person to tackle that storyline
A lot of the jokes didn't really land for me either. Like, I LOVED the humor in Ragnarok, and I like how Ragnarok revels in its own insanity, but like...

I feel like Ragnorok's success just set Thor on a path to destruction.
Thor was one of my favorite Marvel characters. He was so cool.
Now he's just a running joke. What should be a more serious and tragic character turned into a bad joke in one of the worst Marvel films to date.

I looked up what an ashcan comic was on Wikipedia during the episode, and the 2015 adaptation of the prologue of WoT is cited as one of the four most prominent examples of an ashcan for film and television, with the others being The Hobbit (1967), the 2011 Hellraiser: Relevations, and the 1994 Fantastic Four film, three of which were also mentioned on this episode.
This is so much fun to watch.
Experientially delightful, and narratively abysmal. One of the best descriptions I've heard for disappointing media.

The disappointment of a generation was palpable, mix in with a little bit of anger.
The last one I read was the lost colonie(6th one) what they did with the movie was about as bad and as insulting as the Eragon movie

Evidently dragonfruit tastes so mediocre because you can't get it fresh in most places and it doesn't get to it's full sweetness. Imagine a grocery store tomato in February vs a farmer's market tomato in the summer. Never had a fresh on before but it's what I've heard from people who grow them.
My list of disappointing media: Almost all of Nu-Trek, the horrendous Wheel of Prime, the Rise of Skywalker (yes, even more than the Last Jedi or the Prequels), Mass Effect Andromeda, Cyberpunk 2077 (the gameplay itself, I quite liked the story, but it wasn't an RPG like they'd promised), the last decade of Marvel and DC Comics, for the most part. Man of Steel.... those are the most prominent that come to mind.

I remember being so disappointed leaving the theater after the live action Enders Game. My hopes weren’t super high but I thought casting alone would help a ton. 😢 it did not.
It felt like a collection of familiar scenes and nothing more.
The problem with the movie is that it was pretty much just about Battle School, which somehow still felt rushed, while the book is mostly about leadership and overcoming adversity.

I missed Quantum of Solace when it came out and saw it a few year's late and now have 100% forgot everything about it.... Very rare for me to not remember anything from a movie but if I try really hard all I remember were the bad guy's socks (he was sitting at a computer chair talking to bond for a bit?) and I think there was a long scene in a bunker or something like that.
I have to assume the sugarcane transport will ultimately evolve to use enclosed trucks.
Its nice to see somebody else give love and thunder some praise; my wife and loved it, it wasn’t incredible cinema, but we had a lot of fun and felt some feelings.
I'm also a fan of Love and Thunder. I won't call it any kind of top-tier, but I genuinely enjoyed it.

Not sure if you’ve done an episode like this. I’ve just started but I think it’d be really interesting to talk about media that you didn’t really like in the moment but are really good memories. An example I have is a terrible terrible movie that I won’t even bother mentioning by name. Probably the worst piece if media I’ve ever consumed but some of the jokes in it make me and my friends laugh now
The Golden Compass was the first movie I ever fell asleep in a theater watching :)
The Eragon movie is easily my most disappointing movie, I’ve never been so hyped and then let down so hard before(the Last so Enders comes as a close second)
Quantum of Solace and Lost were both majorly affected by the writer's strike. Shows how important writers are. Also, The Golden Compass TV show is really good!

I'm there with you Dan, I grew up watching the clash of the titans that my grandfather had on an old vhs. Probably a hundred times. I was so excited to hear about the remake thinking we'd get great updated visuals but what a complete disappointment.
The Star Wars prequels started coming out when I was 7. I saw Phantom Menace in a theater, having been primed by the original trilogy on VHS before Lucas started screwing with it. It was the single best theater experience I ever had up until that point. Then I saw Fellowship of the Ring, which flat-out changed my life.
Same, only a few years older. Though I also have to add Pirates into that conversation. The first pirates of the Caribbean is legitimately one of my all-time favorite movies and I think does not get enough credit.

Lost definitely falls off, but I find the whole show still worth it for absolutely masterful performance of Benjamin Linus. Best thing to come out of the post S1 period.
Dragonfruit in Taiwan is quite delicious! The taste is definitely subtle, but you should give it a second try if it is in season.

Now do an episode on best movies experienced in a theater. Or an episode on movies or tv shows you went into with low expectations and were surprised by how much you enjoyed it.
I don't think most people have had a good dragonfruit. The good ones are incredibly flavorful, a lot of the ones from the store are tasteless

I really liked that one. It wasn't perfect, but it was way better than the other Marvel films in recent years, other than Spiderman.
I also just love the Guardians. And was very happy they made a good movie to send them off amidst my disappointment with the rest of the recent Marvel flicks.
Foxes being famous for their heists made me laugh way more than it probably should 😂

Guardians 3 is out now, too (not sure when this was actually recorded tho); you're 3 and 4 behind. :P I enjoyed Guardians 3 but have been thinking that it kind of ties a bow on the earlier phases' storylines that weren't cleaned up by Endgame, and those are the ones I'm 'hype' invested in. Like I enjoyed the Ms Marvel show, I'm looking forward to The Marvels movie, but I'm not *hyped* for it.
I wonder if there will be a food heist at the Riding Excuses Retreat. 🤔

I went down to Colombia recently and tried yellow dragonfruit "Pitahaya" and it was hands down my favorite fruit there! Even better than mango or pineapple! I think we get ripped off in the U.S. because all the tropical fruits have to be picked early to survive shipment overseas but a true fresh ripe dragonfruit is sweet and I would buy them by the basket as a treat for myself.
On a side note, it also has laxative properties so.... just be careful...
I've experienced the same with regard to Plantains, Red Bananas,Coconuts, and Papaya here vs. Central America
About the food heist, the newspaper is Hindustan Times and its a well established Indian newspaper. The story perhaps takes place in the southern state of Kerala. Elephants are pretty revered all across India but they are specially privileged in that state.
Lost and Game of Thrones were the biggest disappointments in terms of investment and closure.

Try to get your hands on yellow dragonfruit. Its flavor is still subtle but it's much sweeter than the pink ones and very pleasant.

I am watching it now and was so excited to come here and share this “Secret” and you beat me to it! I honestly think them taking down the electric fence to get to the fruit to be pretty impressive too! It is tragic that 2/3 of their forest has been destroyed…

For it to be disappointing, you have to have medium to high expectations.
I actually love the Golden Compass movie, but I can't say I judge it fairly, since it's directly tied to my childhood and it's one of the reasons I have become such a lover of fantasy. I don't really care for the new TV show, though. Brandon said that the casting for the movie was really inspired, and I agree, the TV show didn't stand a chance against the original cast.

I agree on Lost, I made it until s3 e3 before dropping it. More disappointing to me was Heroes s2 and onwards. While books were specifically avoided, I'll nominate the HDM books after Golden Compass.

For all Bond fans, I have to recommend the doc "The Sound of 007" which I saw recently on Prime. Excellent!
Disappointing media (keep in mind, I'm older than these guys): 3. Cool World. Granted I had no reason to expect anything from this, but if I hadn't seen it for free, a. I wouldn't have seen it, b. Someone would have PAID! 2. Highlander 2. I did pay for this. And boy was it a dumpster fire. So was everything Highlander that came after it. The only highlight of the tv show to me was Sheena Easton. 1. Every season of Firefly after the first. The disappointment being of course we never got them. Even if they had sucked, I would rather have had them.
And of course Fantastic Beasts was disappointing. It was about a character she decided was gay after he was dead. And everything else was retroconned to try to recapture the HP magic. So... pandering.

I watched chainsaw man recently. In it was a scene where a drunken woman tries to kiss a young man, and ends up vomiting down his throat. That scene was closer to the spirit of Tolkien's middle earth than Rings of power.

@@jonathankey1533 it just feels like a weird criticism for Brandon to bring up since he’s guilty of the same thing in his narratives. And his rationale for Kaladin going through that arc over and over is the same for Charlie. Addiction like depression is a continuous struggle not just a beat it once and done.

100% agree on Fantastic Beasts. I thought it was so incredibly boring as well, I don't think I even reached the half hour mark. I couldn't get through it :(
I’m picturing your pachyderm cartoon like Pinky and the Brain where every episode they try to take over all of India but always just end up failing and resorting to standing in the road.
Oh wow, Fantastic Beasts was turned off by me, too. I'm very easy as a critic - I like stuff like the new Cowboy Bebop (that hardly anyone likes), and I love the original HP movies. But yeah... Fantastic Beasts is one of the few times where my wife and I looked at each other about 20-30 minutes into a movie and asked if we could watch something else.
