Thanks a ton for this helpful video. I recently had my 3rd ever gout flare up, and this time the negative effects lasted longer than before. One thing led to another, and my big toe stiffened up with tenderness on the side of my foot. After doing your recommended toe exercises, I have a lot more mobility than before I watched this video. I even have less pain when walking and my foot even looks better. Keep up the great work! I’m happy to have found this video.

After doing these exercises pain went from a 9 (out of ten, felt broken could barely walk) to a 5 within minutes, down to a 1-2 next day and have had 0 pain for weeks since then. Would calf raises be a good strengthener for this joint if there's no pain? I believe that would be considered "weight bearing". Also can this particular joint improve or at least not get worse with these exercises? Is changing footwear & manipulation all we got? Of course, an anti inflammatory diet & regular cardio & weight traing for the overall body will help. I feel like in the yr 2017 there would be way more medical advances for this problem.....(in my opinion, of course) thx!

I suffered this and I am not seeing a dr for it, but almost did because of the pain. What I did was soaked my feet in Epson salt with vigorous shakes from a essential oil, which was peppermint. When I did Epson salt alone nothing happened. But when I used the oil in it not only did it give me back mobility, but took away the pain. I used really warm water and soaked up to ankles. Now I can do these exercises, walk without avoiding pressure, and not be waken up in the night with pain. Even the weight of a sheet hurt. So please if you have no allergies do this. If you need to ventilate to do it do that even if you take it outside. It works! Soak at least until water turns cool, and even try with cool water at times.

Thank you. Just diagnosed with Hallux rigidus :( I have a bone spur formation on the joint, which is causing pain and reduced mobility. I just started using the turf toe insert. Will these exercises also help if there is a bone spur already formed?

I have had this condition for nines years. Wearing flexible shoes with mild arch support helped me ( Nike Free Run and Altra Torin). If the shoes are too stiff, then my feet get stiff. Too much movement can hurt as well. I saw a podiatrist and he just told me to use a metal insert or the fusing option. I knew from experience that he was full of crap. All that to say, I'm excited to give this a shot. I'd give you a year's salary to remove this thorn in my life. Thanks. Subbed.

Russ Wilson - You absolutely need to start gentle movements every day! The body needs to move. No improvement will come by doing nothing.

I am a adult ballet dancer. I just started my first classes ever in June 2015 2x a week & will be beginning pointe classes this September 2017. I use many of these exercises at home and while warming up. But my problem is I had badly brushed my great toe last year...walked into a staircase step in the dark...thought I was at the landing so I jammed it pretty hard in bare feet. It's finally seems to be healing and I have almost no pain when I pull on it. I exercise my feet daily. I also tape my toes, wear Ouchpouches to protect them while doing pointe. I love your you-tube videos. I am 59 years old and my attitude about ballet is to live my passion until I cannot do it anymore. Any suggestions /tips for ballet dancers?

Approach dancing on point cautiously. It is no friend to your feet. As a former point dancer, I can tell you that you don’t want to create a life long condition that will affect as you age. You have many years ahead of you, so be smart about it. Listen to your body. Good luck to you!

This is AMAZING!!!!!! Thank you so much! My doctor told me the only thing I can do is get a cortisol injection if the pain gets bad. I miss yoga and doing lunges. I am so excited to keep doing these exercises. Thank you, thank you, thank you. :D

@@fitn56 this just came up in feed. Im a little but if you're still wondering. I have had mutiple rounds of cort shots. I personally HATE them. Hurt more in that area more then anywhere else on foot I got them. And....unfortunately for me the little bit of pain relief was NOT worth the shot. It lasted me only a few weeks. Each person has a different pain tolerence so your experience might be different. Hope that helps a litttle.✌

This video came up after I'd played a different physical therapy video and didn't click "stop" immediately, so out of the blue I heard the theme song: "Bob and Brad...the two most famous...physical therapists...on the internet!" and now I cannot stop laughing. OR playing it. Absolutely hilarious. It's Monday, and I needed this. Thank you.

I'm confused. You say to have a stiff shoe or a carbon insert to prevent the toe from moving but then you say you need to move the toe/joint.
