It's called Norh Road because it's the Great North Road, the original road between London and Scotland.

+1 It isn't signposted North Road until it passes under the railway bridge near "North Road station", the first passenger railway station in the world, which was probably on the first video, Stu.
It's called NORTHGATE, then HIGH NORTHGATE before the bridge 👍👍. Didn't know the Salters' Bridge! Excellent video +1. Our home town too.

Amazing, my dad was born at no 27 Lewes road, his dad worked on the railways. A couple of doors from your home the mayor used to live. You can see the new paver outside is place from where the mayors lamp stood.

Brings back memories, I lived very close to where you cycled at around 2:30 for the first 40 years of my life - moved to the warmer climate in Australia since then. Loved it. two points, you passed Morrisons, that used to be a very large railway facility, it employed many people in its time. Darlington was a big heavy engineering town with Cleveland Bridge, Whessoe - I worked there, The Railway yards. I think it has mostly all gone now. The other is at around 2: you passed what used to be Erics Fish bar, I am sure anyone who lived in the area would know the place it was a local fish shop, great fish and chips and a great meeting place for everyone there. Thanks for showing me my old town mate.

Darlington still has the tradition of great fish n chips shops :) Have you ever been back to Darlington? Surprisingly, I’m now in Australia for a couple of months.

Loved the video, never knew about that bridge, very good it's still standing. The West Park where all the stones and stuff are only opened around 14 year ago. It use to be the chemical works. Remarkable how even now it looks aged and natural.

Brilliant video Stu as I have lived in Darlington all my life this video is truly amazing and awesome and there is a lot of history about Darlington that I did not even know about I know scunny woods or skerningham woods as it is apparently now known as and I have visited the pack horse aka ketton bridge myself many times over the years as I used to live in lime avenue at one point years ago with my late parents and the woods was a local walk in the area plus there was by all accounts more than one World War 2 pill box in Darlington apart from the remaining one on farmland in Glebe road one was apparently on salters lane railway bridge near the railway line many years ago and also I remember on top of North Road Darlington was a blue cast iron water storage tower now long gone for almost 3 decades plus I remember other things like the old Darlington Corporation bus depot on Haughton road with the Darlington Corporation transport company buses now but a memory fantastic memories and videos 😊😊😊

Thank you for your comment. I think it’s a shame that some things that are historical in Darlington are not kept, like the WW2 pill boxes :/ Glad you enjoyed the video as I found it enjoyable finding out stuff that I didn’t know. I’m now travelling South East Asia and finding more about the world not just Darlington haha :)

I was once called out to that bridge believe it or not because of a small tree growing out of it for the heritage trust, I found it bizarre but interesting and it led me to do some research and found it interesting to follow Salters Lane which surprised me to find it lead me back home near Salters Gate.

@@olderbackpacker I did a few jobs for the National Trust and found it interesting how it took me to places such as this that were hidden around me that most know nothing about that ended up leading me to old drover roads and the like all over the Northeast.
It was very interesting finding places that were connected to networks and places before the roads of today making me look at landscapes in a different way that were hidden in plain sight once the knowledge was there it was like looking back in time that many would walk by without a second thought and wonder why this nutter was starring at fields and fell land, once you know you can't help but notice odd things and place names even streets in towns that would give you a clue.
I'm not a history buff per say but I ended up even meeting the head of archaeology for Co Durham and having an interest in sub aqua diving at the time I ended up in rivers underwater looking at stuff from the Roman era where like this bridge the river had changed course for one reason or another, one, in particular, I can't mention online but near you, even since Google earth once you spot the signs things jump out at you, anyway good luck in your ventures I'm rambling on LOL no pun intended.

@@olderbackpacker I'm not a history buff or the hiking type I just found out about the bridge through my work and had an interest at the time in sub aqua diving but the two subjects came together when I did more work for the national trust.
I then met the head of archaeology for Co. Durham that told me of places to check out one being near you, in particular, I can't mention online because of it's significant to Roman times but it was good fun researching and found it as interesting as diving in the sea in some places and now with the likes of google earth it sticks out like a sore thumb if you know how to read the clues, anyway good luck in your adventures

You were happy to depart because of the accent? Says a lot.
Furthermore, it depends who you hang around with. The middle classes certainly don't have the Darlington accent you were so keen on escaping.
