  • Civil Society groups expressed their strong displeasure and frustration over the visit of about 75 foreign delegates from 23 countries to study elections and said it appears to be a protected tour, stage managed exercise and a sham. MG Devasahayam a retired senior IAS officer based out of Bangalore told TNIE, ''They brought them to show the public trust in the electoral process. And why are they avoiding civil society? They are claiming it is the largest delegation of foreign delegates who have come to independently see our electoral process. Civil society groups wanted to meet them but they were not allowed. The exercise seems to be a big fraud. Public trust in the electoral process has fallen badly. Their presence and movements were kept a total secret.''
Mr Devasahayam said, ``They have brought them to say that our electoral process is free and fair and transparent. But it appears to be a `total lie,' and they want to conceal a lot of things. They have been concealing everything so we are very much upset because this has never happened earlier. Earlier it has always been fair and transparent but this time the Election Commission is functioning like a secret society like the many secret societies that are there.''
