I actually decided to go with an A6 avec for 2023 since I'm starting uni as a first year German lit and history student next month (I'm so scared I literally just passed my German fluency exam a month ago after intensively learning for a year) and the weight of those books are probably already gonna be too much. I do like the A5 cousin a lot but it got really really heavy and chunky. I did buy two covers because I know that I'm gonna switch between needing no colour and a lot of colour based on what stimulation I need. I got the oatmeal cover (the other colour of your black A6 cover that you mentioned in the video) and the lavender garden + the pretty animal cover on cover which I'm so excited for.
I agree a lot with you on the topic of people overbuying - I would just feel excessively guilty of the things I couldn't use well. Just last month I didn't use my Hobonichi for about 3 weeks due to chronic fatigue and the autism/adhd brain fog being too strong and I straight up felt like I'd wasted my money despite using it for longer than any other planner I've ever had. I am however a fan of buying extras - I'm very finicky and annotate books a lot so when using a highlighter I either make sure I have a backup of that colour or can reasonably access a new one of it runs out so that I don't have to use two different colours for the same thing.

i felt the same when i switched from the a6- even though i knew it wasn't working anymore, and my new system was, the guilt over "abandoning" something i paid for was immense. i love to buy extras too! im very particular/fussy about my stationery so it's almost easier to spend on that than on anything else.

the struggle with bright colors is real 🫠. i also got my hobo from local stores bc i can’t afford shipping + taxes/customs if i buy from hobo’s website, and i’m actually very happy, as i will probably receive my parcel next week, wohoo 🙌! i wanted the juzo itami’s weekly, but it was a bit overpriced in the shop, so i ended up buying the bunnies one and i’m very pleased. i really like the navy blue and the cover’s texture. i also was lucky to got the clear cover and a pencil board from the same shop. so nice to have this “new section” talking about books! i did struggle a bit during august, only one good book, many dnf’s 😔. i would read the midnight club but it’s not translated into spanish… so, currently reading kingdom of the wicked. have a nice week!~~
ahhh it's so cool that you'll receive it so early! i think my preordered bits wont come until early october, but the bits i panic ordered from hobonichi direct will probably come sooner 😅 the blue of the bunnies is so pretty! and im a sucker for the "hidden" lucky bunnies with bow ties and clovers lol. glad you're enjoying the book segments! i usually have so so many dnf's which is why ive been trying to read silly fun things and not feel bad about it- books i actually end up enjoying rather than popular books or books i think i should be reading but dont end up enjoying 💭 lmk if kingdom of the wicked is good!!
Always love hearing your thoughts on journaling! I too was underwhelmed by the cover selection. I would suggest checking out Etsy next time, there are loads of gorgeous covers on there!

I bought another a6 Japanese version this year. I wish the colours of the English version were the same as the Japanese one inside! I like matching my monthly calendar to the same colour with my mildliners. 🙇🏻♀️ but I also bought the weekly supplement because I got a new job this week (!!) so I feel having a weekly log of tasks will be really helpful.
I was the same, none of the covers except the oatmeal version of yours really grabbed me and I already have a cover that is plain and does the job so just couldn’t justify the cost - maybe next year!

Great video again, nice mix of content. Thank you for navigating the new Hobonichi ranges and explaining the options. Now I am tempted to try a 'Weeks' next year now. Glad to hear that I am not alone in over buying planers for the year. I must rationalise too though. Maybe 😂
Please keep the book reviews in, its always good to hear what someone thinks of a series and its a great way to share ideas of new books to read. I am going to re read Hound of the Baskervilles this Halloween. Personally my favorite 'Gothic' novel.

You’re early tonight. Have you ever thought of designing your own covers in which you can sell? Have you read the Anne Rice books Interview with a Vampire, the Vampire Lestat and so on? If you haven’t already. I’ve read the Sookie Stackhouse series it’s ok.
i've read most of the anne rice books- armand was my favourite 🙇🏻♀ i've considered the sookie stackhouse series but never end up going for it 💭

The bunny bow & tie weeks is really cute and I got it myself. I do prefer to use a cover on cover with the bow & tie collection because of the material, for me it feels wrong on my fingertips. I do have the same problem with other materials as well.
I hope it will not be a problem for you.
i'll probably use a cover on cover too (to protect it longterm, if nothing else)! i was wondering how it feels though- it'll be my first fabric weeks 💭 i have lots of problems with things feeling wrong on my fingertips.
I'd be interested in more book reviews, always enjoy them. I really like how small you can write. Do you print or write in cursive? In University I use to write all my notes in print with a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil that enabled me to write really neat. Nowadays I do both, print for work and cursive in my journal with fountain pen. Your journaling and the system you use to organize everything is always inspiring for me. Thanks.
i write in cursive! i used to print but now that i write a bit more daily, i find that print takes too long and i cant keep up with my thoughts lol. i do miss it sometimes though- it was definitely a lot easier to read back! thanks for your kind words 🙇🏻♀

Hi! I ordered the Days Free with the blue and pink cover they released this year and a clear cover for it because yes, the cover on cover for this year is so beautiful but with the colour I choose I felt it was too much. I also ordered an A5 cover, the black and light blue with the cover on cover and that will work better because it won’t be too much.
I am still unsure of how my book will look next year because I have been using a Moleskine notebook for years and I love it, but very recently - because of you - I adopted the margins and I have discovered it helped me so much, I have been testing it for two months and I have done so much. I started my current journal on October 11, 21 and I barely did something, but since I started using the margins on July 14, I have filled most of the journal already. But that also meant that I needed to move to one with squares because having lined paper makes harder to keep up with the margins. I could continue with the same brand but the Moleskine is infamous for making the squares too dark and that’s really bad for my brain.
I will try and downsize to an A6 to see how it works, but if it doesn’t work I have a Stalogy A5 on the ready. I don’t think the days free has enough pages for me, but I also have an A6 stalogy ready to be used in case it doesn’t last me enough. It makes me anxious to think it won’t be enough 😅 I don’t know, but I am discovering what works better for me.
It was kind of expensive, but I will use my covers until they fall off 😅 so I don’t mind the expense. Also, I am still not very sure about the hobonichi notebooks, I was curious but I don’t use calendars or anything, it just adds stress to me so I might not use it to its fullest and I feel that’s wasteful. But I think is a good experiment.
Relatable Moleskine problems. Hobonichi plain notebooks are so good, no calendar to keep up with and super slim for having 240 pages.
honestly one of the best thing about switching to the 'weeks' books is having the margins back. i'm not sure why they're *so* helpful but they really are- glad to hear they've worked for you too! the dark squares in moleskine and leuchtturm books is so upsetting, 100% agree with you there. it's so so noisy visually.
i hope the a6 works for you! a stalogy back-up is a really solid choice. im also worried the regular weeks book wont be enough, and im a bit worried that i wont like having external back-ups in the memo pads. but we'll see! hopefully things work out well for us both 🙇🏻♀♥
I ended up buying the "Have a Nice Day" cover and am trying the AVEC in a6 again, I started in july and like it. But sometimes, I can't help but wonder, why is it so hard to not just make a basic cover in neutral colors, like black, gray, white, cream, and navy? I would have snatched so much more stuff into my little hoard if the colors didn't blind me
I'm not familiar with Hobonichis so your walk-through was very interesting! I'm surprised they don't make the same covers available in all sizes, but maybe it's intended to force people to buy multiples.
Book content would be great! I haven't had the mental capacity for much reading the past few years, and I'm now scheduling just a few minutes to read and ease back into it.
I was also disappointed by this year's colours. Ideally I wanted the mega but hated the colours. I can't be stuck on that blue for a whole year...let alone the others. I settled for the champagne. If I hate it, or i run out of pages, I'll buy an ivory one cheaply from Amazon japan later in the year. I do love stationery talk *thumbs up*
Loved your review of all the Hobonichi 2023 releases! I've gone for a simple system for next year, partly because I know I need it to be fairly simple, and also money 😅 Got the A6 Avec and the purple mega weeks, so that I could get the new cover on cover to use with it ( just waiting for it to come back in stock from a UK shop because the postage would be ridiculous for that one thing from Hobonichi official shop). Because, basically, I liked the cover on cover more than anything else in the new line up. The Avec is kinda back up, kinda to have a place that I can stick things where bulk won't be a huge issue.
the cost of the shipping from hobonichi was what made me buy a few bits later in the week! the coc and pencil boards went out of stock on the uk based site i was using so i was a bit stuck 🥲 ended up being the perfect justification to shop with hobo lol. it feels a little easier to "invest" when i feel so happy with my current set-up, hopefully covers and pencil boards can be reused for years, etc. the avec as a back-up is so smart! i'm using the weeks memo pads for the same reason 🙇🏻♀
the bunny weeks is so cute!! hopefully it'll work out for you nicely! i only got an a6 planner (the english version -- i like it better as it's less colourful than the japanese version) and i plan to use it with a midori md clear cover that i already have. and if the a6 ends up working for me i might invest in a nice cover from etsy or ebay later :-) ngl seeing other people's massive hauls has been stressing me out a little bit but i'm glad i went my own way and didn't get a weeks just in case, as i can always get one in the spring release if i end up missing it. and with the money that i saved by not getting a cover i got to buy a fountain pen i've been wanting (a twsbi eco glow in the dark if anyone's interested) so that's cool! oh and i loved the book segment & i'm always up for book recs, esp horror! loved the cover design on the pulpy vampire novel haha
it's so nice that the midori covers fit so neatly on the hobo books! i avoid looking at other peoples hauls too much because it makes me panic about what i chose, even though i know what i need and what will work for me etc 💭 so i think you made the right choice! the fountain pen sounds v v cool, please send me a picture if you get it! i tried fountain pens again recently for the first time since i was a child but i write too fast/messily and i kept smudging it constantly lol. i felt like it was messing with my work/thought flow so maybe it isn't to be 🥲 the covers get worse and worse with each book in the series!! im on book 3 and it's *terrible*
@@MeganRhiannonWhich fountain pen and ink did you use back then? With fountain pens, switching inks or to another fountain pen can change the whole experience! (Also paper, but your paper seems pretty defined. 😁)
If you ever consider trying fountain pens again (they are also way less likely to induce hand/wrist/arm cramps and hurts!), would suggest looking into goulet pens, they make great educating videos.
Also: There are some pretty decent beginner fountain pens from Pilot, since you are using their frixxion pen, maybe you would like them. 😊

I love Jeaniene Frost as an author! She lives in Florida, USA which is why Bones is not as accurate.
I prefer the two offshoot series from the Night Huntress Series (Vlad and Ian's stories-Night Prince & Night Rebel series) rather than the main as Cat has slightly annoyed me.
Jibun techo lite for me in 2023. Love Hobonichi paper, but the layout was too much for how little I write. And more expensive.
I was a one piece fan so I was really happy that was the case. But it is really strange that all the one piece stuff is on sale on oct 1.
