KULNING - Calling our SHEEP - Ancient Herding Call by Sarah Eden

  • When I heard 'kulning' for the first time I immediately fell in love with it!
Like probably many others too, I got inspired by Jonna Jinton to try the ancient nordic herding call, named #kulning
So today I just tried calling our sheep with it. And although they are mostly rather shy, all of them came after a while! I'm stunned how well this is working, even when they've never heard me do this before.
I also want to say that I wasn't preparing this video. I just did it spontaneously and I even have a little cold right now, so don't expect me to be perfect, please! ;-)
I hope you'll enjoy it anyway and wish you a wonderful day!

Kulning videos are the most purest form of love towards animals...and it just shows how loving and emotional they are...they feel just as we feel. They are even smarter than humans these days with body language...all videos you see an animal never approaches the woman singing head on...but to the side to show no aggression...just wanting love....animals are children and we as humans should protect all of them.

@@galgar5660 yes animals hunt for food, that’s a survival technique, few animals hunt for sport, humans are one of the animals that hunt for sport, because yes humans are animals. Nature is not indifferent to life and death, majority of animals take what they need unless they are as self centred as humans and use their prey to decorate their dens. There is predator and prey. Humans used to be prey until we adapted and evolved, now we are top of the food chain. Humans are animals, we just have opposable thumbs, and the will to dominate the planet, that is the difference between us and most animals. Monkeys, gorillas, chimpanzees, and apes have opposable thumbs (Birds hold things in their feet as well) but they don’t want to dominate the planet, we are also more related to a pig than we are monkeys, same with a banana. In short, most people aren’t living in a fairy tale, they just aren’t ignorant to facts like others

My grandma used to do something similar with the chickens. The first note is high-pitched and moderatelly long and the other one is lower pitched and shorter. It's polish it sounds kind of like 'chip' (cip) but the ch is softer as if it's mixed with s if that makes sense. She would say it in a weird pattern and her chickens would come, it went something like : CHEEEEEp cheep cheeep cheep cheeep cheeep CHEEEp.

I'm also polish and my beloved Grandma who passed away 2 years ago would do the same with the chickens. We also had turkeys and she had a different herdcalling sound for them: she was going "poolka poolka poolka" (pulka pulka pulka in polish transcription). It always worked perfectly!

Seeing this video feels like going back in time to the 19th century. The old fashioned sheep calling, her floorlength dress, and it being in a rural spot with no modern looking facility in sight. I could've believed that this video was taken in the 19th century, if traveling back in time was possible. But it's still great to see people today do things just like they did back then, to not let an old fashioned atmosphere die. I'm also interested in how life was back then

I tried calling for a large tired looking sheep lying down I passed in a field today. He didn't come xD I just have been kulning for at least 5 -10 minutes whilst trying to remember how to do it . He/she definitely thought about it tho, turned it's head and at one point went to rest it's legs on the ground to stand then I gave up ha , it's real work! Mainly stopped cuz I was afraid of someone seeing me lol. BUT wow did I feel alive after doing it. I can't even explain how it makes you feel releasing that sound into nowhere the feeling is INCREDIBLE so even tho I didn't successfully call the sheep it was totally worth it :D

This kind of "calls" are effective also with long distances because use harmonics, that are particular sounds that you are able to recognize also sorrounded with other sounds or loud noises. Same stuff is the Yodel/jodel (tyrol) ( also the throat singing use harmonics but that's something different). All those tecniques are common in the Germanic coltures.
P.S. have some goats, when i give to them some corn i shake a cow bell. And i give to them corn only in this way. After 2 weeks goats came to me running as devils when hear the bell. Easy way man!

Yes, the yodeling is similar and beautiful, too! Also the ‚Yoik‘ of the Sami people (the indigenous people of North Scandinavia).
Haha, I know this trick with the food too. But in my case I can assure you that no food was ever included. The animals probably just come because they are curious about these sounds.

Cows like music, when playing an instrument they will also come. Didn’t know about sheep. Maybe all animals like music.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

I miss being back home. I was born and raised in a town with all sorts of farm animals. My family decided that we should move to the City when I was eight years old. There’s nothing more than this that I miss ever so dearly. I want to be back home to all of this. :)
Quick question, do you think this could work on all animals including dogs? I work at a dog daycare, and I am also a dog bather. I just wonder if using this would have them come to me?

Hey dear! Thank you for your lovely comment and sorry that it took me so long to answer. I actually just saw it now. So, I guess it could work with dogs too. Just try it ;) and then tell me, if it worked, ok? See you :-*
