  • The Sentis Brain Animation Series takes you on a tour of the brain through a series of short and sharp animations.
The fifth in the series explains what is happening in our brains as we experience emotions -- both the helpful and unhelpful ones! This empowering animation demonstrates that while sometimes our emotions can 'hijack' our rational thinking, we also have the power to manage our emotions with conscious thought.
Who is Sentis? We are a global team assisting individuals and organisations change their lives for the better.
The human mind is our focus and we believe the mind is an individual's most important performance tool.
We are the world leaders in the application of psychology and neuroscience to safety, leadership development, and wellbeing in the workplace.

This is a big problem. Our emotions can take over our thinking completely to the point where we are insane if we don't watch out. Pride is the worst enemy to rationality. I wish more people knew this.

This is one of the better presentations describing emotion in terms of perceptions related to threat or "reward" reach the brain via the amygdala and set in motion chemical changes enabling us to cope or re-act in ways that best serve our well-being. However there are various perceptions of situations and objects, indicating promise which are neither "rewarding" or "good" ,as others suggest,
i.e the term "promise" is more appropriate encompassing all attractive stimuli initiating emotion..

THIS Is How You Balance Your Emotions
We can balance our emotions with the help of the environment.
What I mean by “environment” is our society and its influences, that we can surround ourselves with such influences that will guide us on how to direct the emotions that awaken in us.
For instance, we know the example of peer pressure, when our friends tell us to do or not to do something, and their influence makes us follow their recommendations. Using this force of our surrounding environment, we can choose our environment-the kinds of people, media and values we surround ourselves with-and accordingly change our attitude toward certain emotions.
We can then build our intellect with our social influences. Our desires constantly grow, and we correspondingly need to build a greater and greater intellect with which we can deal with our growing desires.
Adjusting our environmental influences in order to build the intellect so that we can best deal with our growing desires is the essence of education. It is what we need to teach the younger generation, that we can balance our emotions with our intellects, and by doing so, come to see our perfect state in life.
We should thus try to find an environment that would be able to supplement our constantly-surfacing emotions in a certain direction. Our environment should act as a damper, helping us mediate our inner excitements and eruptions, bringing them to a state where we would be able to realize them-but to realize them in ways that benefit both ourselves and others.
In other words, we need to examine ourselves in relation to our environment, whether the environment accepts what we want to do. If we find that our desires match those of the environment, then we can continue realizing our desires. We can then determine that we can carry out what we want to do, that it will benefit both us and those around us, and that everything will turn out just fine if we go ahead and realize our desires.
This is how we can balance our emotions-by learning how to balance between our intellect and our emotions via our surrounding environment.

While there are some impulsive acts which lie outwith the process of emotion as described the assertion that there is no cognitive activity on arousal of emotion is untrue. Emotion is initiated on a judgement that threat or promise exists so that,, brief though it may be, the judgement can not be other than a cognitive function. Following the initial judgement but prior to re-action (if any) we also often have time to call on reason and memories to influence how we may best respond.

This is what Darwin made a theory at least. I like this theory a lot, it makes sense, but there are flaws too. If you're truly interessted in this topic I suggest you go google some more (I recently read “What is an emotion?“ which I got at University and it delivered lot's of insights though I guess there are loads of books called that so you might not be able to find it anyways). I just wanted to say that it isn't enough to simply state that an emotion is just some function of the brain and people should stop making a fuss around it. As I personally agree with this theory I'm not going to deny this is true, just that it's not that simple. So please guys in the comment section calm down and do your research

Ever heard of dissociation? Emotions aren't a big problem. Emotions are good ,without them we cannot have much of an experience in life. Our brain becomes lost in nowhere because nothing has meaning.Furthermore, without them we wouldn't know what to value so that we can act accordingly. This actually happens to people who experience dissociation. Victims of extreme stress or some psychological trauma lose their emotions because they are too intense that they become overwhelming to the point where the brain can no longer handle them. It is a kind of different suffering that is many times worse than an unwanted emotion. So next time you begin complaining about emotions, just be grateful you have emotion..

The next day you see them and they are just acting normal and completely guilt-free. You'd probably at least want to lash out at them, right? Most people would want to kill them. That's an example of emotions overcoming your rational thinking.

Think of the damage that would do to your development's as a foetus. Then at birth and everyday thereafter you're neglected abused see your mother abused and generally shat on from the people you're suppose to trust most. You turn to alcohol drugs crime gambling binge eating as a way to cope. Your emotional state, thinking, limbic system and overall Brain structure will be very different from someone who did not experience these kind of events. That's how.
