1975 Triumph TR6 - part 1 - Yet Another Rusty Beauty

  • Since my broken leg is limiting me in what I can and can't do I decided to bring in another car that has been on my list that involves little projects that I can do using just one leg :) I know it is a little bit confusing when I skip back and forth, but I have no choice. I need to pick and chose what I can do or do nothing at all...

    Black smoke = rich /carbon
    White smoke = water/steam

      Agreed, that looked like black carbon smoke (ie rich) to me. Also, note the plugs, so black and sooty, but dry black, not oilly.

    Blue grey smoke from the exhaust should be oil rings but that smoke was really black so looks to me like rich petrol mixture. Best way to find out is to pop in the colourtune plug and look at the colour : Yellow is a rich mixture.. Yellow/orange is burning oil ... light blue is a weak mixture and bunson blue means you are good to go and dont waste any time delaying :). Hope you get better soon and back to full recovery. TR6 worldwide need you. (at a closer look it looks grey to me so oil rings or valve guides) :(

    you put oil down bores as a wet cheak, so thats normal to smoke a bit for a while, if carb is giving to much fuel again it will smoke black or grey too. get timing correct then carbs mixture, then balanced,

    On the subject of the radio, there is a CZcamsr called Pete C. He restores Mk3 Ford Cortinas.
    One thing he has done himself to all of them is to include modern equipment into the cars, including Bluetooth and MP3 connections to the original factory radio including being able to control the functionality from the existing radio buttons.

    I don't mind the Java green. Can't say I love it, but I don't HATE it either...if it was the original color I'd be OK with it but wouldn't paint one that color. Still it IS different. But that smoke is completely BLACK (from the video and plugs are very sootie so I'd suspect carb issues along with ignition (possibly)? I don't see any blue in the smoke and unless the oil is going down (longer analysis) with blow by the rings (and the compression test didn't confirm that) then only other test is a leak down test to confirm health of the engine. Hope your leg heals up soon and your back on 2 legs. Thanks for the inspiration (both of you) to get back to my TR6 which has sat in the garage all winter and barely looked at it!! Keep up the great informative vids (both of you) we all appreciate it!!!!

  • @johnschmidt4037
    @johnschmidt4037 Před 3 lety +1

    Always best to keep the car the original color. It will then match the door jam plate and the heritage certificate should the owner decide to order one. There are plenty of red, BRG and white (I have one) TR6's but the browns (3) and unusual sub-colors like Java green are much less common. When I go to a car show and come across 15-20 Triumphs parked together, it is the less common colors that catch my eye.

    That compression test suggests that this is a late model detuned engine with low compression ratio. The engine needs 9.5:1 compression to run well. The LC engines developed only 106bhp! The early injected engines had 150bhp...... If it was mine I would up the CR and change the cam... triple webers would really let it sing

    • @RustyBeauties
      @RustyBeauties  Před rokem

      Yes, there is a lot of potential in these engines, that can be unleashed, but even detuned they have more than enough power for such a small car. Most of the owners here in US and Canada are happy to have their cars the way they came out of the factory, which for this part of the world was 7.6 compression or something like that. Only the cars that stayed in Europe had 9.3

  • @davidfidler1174
    @davidfidler1174 Před 3 lety +1

    That clunking sound could be engine mounts or a bad ball joint. The engine is tired, it is running rich (black smoke) and also burning oil (blue smoke), suspect rings and possibly needs a rebore. Low compression would suggest this also. No on the Java, I prefer the Laurel or Mallard green.

    • @cheftush
      @cheftush Před 3 lety +3

      I checked the engine mounts Fid and they looked to be in good shape. Yeah, could be a bad ball joint or something else broken there…could even be a coil spring. I’m not sure what caused the damage on the front wheel arch and whatever caused that could be also related to that front end sound.

    Black smoke from the exhaust is a sign of burning fuel excessively, this is why your plugs are black. If it was burning oil it would be blue smoke.

  • @edwardkendall3905
    @edwardkendall3905 Před 3 lety +1

    Yes to the Java green, agree with the smoke colour comments too, missing psi in the sump? Bitter blue = valve job :-)

  • @alethacriss1528
    @alethacriss1528 Před 3 lety +1

    I don't think its burning oil, the smoke I see is unburned fuel (black) not blue which would indicate oil burn. Bad rings will show steady blue smoke, Valve guides will show smoke under acelleration or back off in gear.

I wonder that the ignition is not an electronic ignition, this old system needs a lot of service. Something what I not forget is the firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4.
