This is how my Grandmother always made hers, she never bought real butter only Oleo, (margarine). But always used Crisco Shortening for her pie dough and frying her Chicken. My Grandmother was a young wife during the depression so she did things the old way which I admired, she ALWAYS used canned milk in her coffee too. She bought milk in cartons, but never broke the habit of canned milk use. Oh how I loved her. She was an angel on earth all her life. Her name was Irene. 🙏💓💓💓💓
As with EVERYTHING you do, this tutorial is absolutely, hands down...the BEST!!! I just can't thank you enough for all of your amazing recipes. My family has come very excited when it comes to Rachel Cooks with Love night; we have them often and we have never had anything that wasn't just out of this world. I know you work hard doing all of these Tutorials but please know that you have and continue to help so many people! Thanks again
My grandmother’s recipe was nearly identical to this one. She put her shortening, usually lard, in one tablespoon at a time then used the pastry cutter. When it was time for the ice water, she also did that a tablespoon at a time and continued to use the cutter until all the water was in then switched to a fork.
For the holidays, I may need 15 or so crusts. Around the beginning of November, I measure out all the ingredients and put flour, salt, and shortening in a small Zip-lock bag, one bag for each crust. It then goes into the freezer. When it’s time to make pies, I remove the crusts and finish them in the food processor adding the ice water through the chute. Back into the bag and the fridge until I’m ready to roll it out. My grandmother believed the less your warm hands cam in contact with the crust, the flakier and more tender it would be. What would we have done without our grandmothers?
lard makes amazing pie crusts.
You are correct. My grandmother always used lard. It is definitely a cut above Crisco@@MargaretCutt-um8iq
So, you use lard INSTEAD of shortening? Ty
Thank you Rachel, good recipe and GREAT tip on oiling the cup b4 adding Crisco 👏🏿
I'm glad to know this too. So EZ
I agree
I use this hack for anything sticky or hard to remove, such as peanut butter, honey, and Crisco/lard 😊
I 'm going to make your pie crusts.I see what I did wrong. That trick with the measuring cup for the Crisco, I have always done that with honey but never Crisco. Thank you for the wonderful tips. When I watch you, you take me back to being with my Grandmother who taught me the love of baking, canning. She died when I was 10, but she gave me so many of her basic ways of cooking. Thank you for everything.
Rachel, you are such a joy! You LOVE what you do and it is fun to learn from you. Keep inspiring us. We have lost the art of home cooking !

Apple pies in an air fryer ? Really ?😊cool
My grandma always used shortening and had a very flaky crust most people use butter. It's not the same. Thanks for the recipe. I'm sure her's was probably the same. Im going to use this recipe. Love your recipes
Yeah, I tried using all butter 🧈 recently, but I didn’t get the flakiness I get with shortening. 🥧
As they say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” 😀
Ok I was about to ask if I could substitute the shortening lol
I will use this

Now I see why my crust. often turned out tough! Thank you, Rachel, for being such a help.
Hi Rachel, I love your channel. I'm a Chef and I still learn many things from your videos. I just wanted to share with you a tip I saw on another channel, when making 2 pie crusts divide them into 2/3 and 1/3 that way you have a bigger piece for the bottom and smaller for the top because you need a bigger piece for the bottom because the sides angle out. Keep up the good work.
GREAT tip!!!
THANK YOU!
Great video! Now you just need to finish up with when it can be rolled out (does it need to be refrigerated first?), and maybe tips for filling it out! Thank you! I'm going to try it now!😉
Did you find out if you need to refrigerate first? I want to make this, but I'm not sure either.
Thank you for another good recipe. Best cooking show ever

Keep on teaching for us young a oldim69love a new recipe
Good video I made chicken pot pie yesterday and my pie crust was a little thick plus the filling was also on the dry side bummers I think had I made the crust a little thinner it would not of suck up my combo cream of chicken soup + 1 can of chicken stock. . I will try again but here is a the total recipe for mock Marie Calendar pot pie 2 pie crusts. 1 can cream of chicken soup. + 1 can of of chicken stock 1 package of Mix veggie + 1/2 cup of pearl onions or 1/2 cup of grilled onions. 1to 2 cups of cubed cooked chicken breasts. 1 9in glass pie pan. add seasonings to taste black pepper, Salt? or use NO-Salt , Bake at 350 for 25 to 30 min or until top crust is light golden brown. Once again me thinks a thinner crust would of made for a better pie :)
Rachel I’m new to your site and I totally love it! Keep it up. God keep your family safe on your trip to Texas. Thanks for your easy explanation when you cook.

I have to reply to this one for I to made your Cinnamon Rolls but I had to change them a little. Were not to have to much sugar so I made the dough the way you did but in the filling I used Cinnamon and Splenda's Brow sugar and Walnuts. Turned out perfect!! Have made them twice. Thank You!
Ur a great, patient, Teacher!
