This comment has nothing to do with meals in a jar. I simply came to the your page & found the most recent video. Because I want to thank you. I'm in Central Florida we are now under a hurricane warning as Ian has come ashore on the south east of the state.Orlando where I'm at will receive the worst of it in the morning. However while I am prepared,, the one item I could not find nor could my neighbors was bread. Months ago I watched your easy sandwich bread video and bought everything to try it as I have never made bread before. I never got around to making it but today I have made two batches so there's four loaves to share. The second batch is rising, the first batch came out of the oven and it smell delicious. The recipe is incredibly easy. Fingers crossed that I didn't mess the recipe up.. they do smell delicious 🤤 If it hadn't been for your video and how you are so reassuring that it's easy for a beginner I never would have tried this....BREAD...something so simple that many people take for granted but when you're at risk of losing power and knowing that you will be eating sandwiches and canned food for a while bread suddenly becomes a necessity....Again THANK YOU .. you saved my neighbors and I from eating everything on crackers..🍞🥪

I can’t wait to try some of these mixes! I would’ve never thought to dehydrate store-bought frozen vegetables but it makes so much sense. They take up less space and freezer space always seems to be limited. Also, if the power goes out, you aren’t running around trying to figure out what to do with all your frozen veggies.

Hi Mary , thank you so much for these videos. I’ve been reaching back to my memories of what my grama taught me as a child. She lived thru the depression and much more. Canning, having a food pantry and such. Making the most of what you have. I turn to you to learn and refresh what i remembered as a child. My memories of my grandma are my best treasure. Thank you again for the teaching and your time.

  • @sassyherbgardener7154

Hi Mary, your food always looks so delicious! I would warn people that those white plastic lids are not air tight, so they will not keep the food fresh for long term. (They are not leak proof either. Don't ask me how I know, LOL.) Anyway, every other channel making jar meals, that I have seen, uses oxygen absorbers or vacuum seals, with canning lids, for shelf life. Oxygen (not air) is what will age your ingredients. (Of course, you don't want moisture or sunlight either.) The non air tight lids also allow moisture in to your dehydrated foods, which ruins them, after awhile. I'm sure using them up quickly may be fine, but wanted to let others know, just in case. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipes.

I love Mary's videos! It's like your mother figure welcoming you in to her home and she is just doing her stuff, pottering and prepping and you are asking questions. It just feels like a wholesome hug and i just wanted to give you a virtual one back. Thank you Mary. You are a rare find.
I love traditional cooking from around the world. I absolutely love your 4 corners kitchen concept and it is really helping here with all of the produce from the garden that we are processing. We built the start of a prepper pantry in the workshop. 2 Shelves about 35" x 15.5" in imperial. I have almost filled the top shelf stacked with home-made canned foods. We have juice, pasta, rice and oil on the bottom shelf. It has hardwood backing and just needs some doors, so i am currently using a towel to keep out the light.
Today, we just cleaned out our working pantry. I wrote down what we had and the dates on all this new lentils and stuff that we got from my mother in laws house after she passed. When we cleared out her pantry we just left pasta, plain flour, some tins and herbs that i knew that we would still need the next time that we visited for the big movement of stuff.
I just have our baking cupboards to sort through and tidy so we have more space and to also make a mental note of what we already have. I just need to decide, which of her many le croisset iron casserole pots to take back to keep. Do people buy these second hand?
Going to be really hard and sad trying to choose which serving dishes, plates, etc. They did down size from the big house to the bungalow but they still have more cupboards than we do in a bigger space. We do have a potential cubby area that we can build units/ shelves. It isn't just about it's practical use but also a lot of pieces are sentimental.
I only have a few small pieces from when my mum died when i was 10, so i appreciate these heirlooms, even if it things like US cup measuring cups or a proper metal jam funnel. She had two boys and her eldest son isn't settled and not into cooking big family meals, so he is happy that we can keep what we can in the family. She also love traditional cooking and has every coloured chopping boards and lots of old cooking tools i needed to google. She never wanted help in the kitchen, in fact, it was a distraction so it was very hard to learn from her. She had a whole bookcase dedicated to cook books. I have taken what hubby allowed me to take as i needed to bare in mind that we also have some of his Grandpa's cookbooks. I like the old Mrs Beaton's cook books and some that i found from the 70's, where everything was made into jelly! Whether you like it or not, i love the history and the old/ new colour photos in the books.
Anyway, i won't bother you any more. Whilst grateful for our super bumper crops of tomatoes this year, compared to the wet blight weather we had last year, i can't wait for the harvesting and processing of that to die down. Still have loads of veg in the garden, here in Zone 9, London, UK.
Kid is sick of fresh tomatoes as they were in spring with spinach. Not sure they have understood the kilos of tomatoes that have been processed. lol It is your back that suffers from processing the most.
It isn't just about the cost of food or increased energy prices that i am preparing for but i think we maybe getting a very cold winter.
Anyway, you take care our sweet friend x

Thanks for sharing. I will do that once we are at our own place especially for Lee and Daniel to eat while I'm at work. They wouldn't let me eat my sinigang yesterday. They said it wasn't safe because it sat on the stove for five hours after I turned off the heat. It was still hot when I went to bed the night I made it. Did share cake slices with my friends at work. It was a mix of lemon, blueberry, and banana nut cake slices. Two friends sang happy birthday to me. If it doesn't storm tonight may visit Lee and Daniel.

Thanks Mary! I so enjoyed your topic today. I am dehydrating another batch of zucchini today (8 zucchini made 12 ozs of dehydrated zucchini flakes... wow! I had no idea what to expect). My family won't eat zucchini unless I've hidden it in the dish. Don't worry, I do tell them it's in there and challenge them to find it (haha). I'm inspired to make a few meals in a jar with the dehydrated zucchini as an ingredient. My environment is very humid so the silica packets are often used as well as vacuum sealing the jars with my saved canning lids. Heading over to your explore your playlist soon!

Thank you so much. If I were making the bread you showed, I would add leavener at the time of baking. It would, indeed, be less convenient, but at my house, the leavener may get old enough to lose its"oomph" if I don't take steps to use a fresh supply. I did not notice in the video if you mention a time frame for its use. I have learned through experience to date everything. For the pasta you showed, I think there would be a great difference in the finished dish with the choice of pasta. The large variety you show has lots of air spaces. A smaller type, like elbow pasta, would result in a lot more product in the jar hence changing relationships.

Thanks for the great ideas using dehydrated food! We live in an area that is humid in the warm months. I have found that the plastic lids are not tight enough to keep my dehydrated products dry. I use the flat lids and rings. I also vacuum seal the food in the mason jars (so I don’t need silica gel packs) and reuse the flat lids over and over for dry food storage.

Hello my Texas neighbor (and former NY neighbor). I love these meals in a jar ideas and I would love to put them in my prepper pantry. I’m single and live alone and was wondering if an oxygen absorber or silicone pack could be added to make this a more long term item for my shelf? I also travel extensively with my job and I’m gone for almost a month at a time. These would be great healthy meals that would be easy to prepare in a hotel room (I do stay in hotels with a kitchenette). I’m thinking that a mylar bag would be better to travel with? Thoughts? And thank you so much for all you do for the Prepper community.

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  Před rokem +2

Howdy Kat, ❤️🤠❤️ I would stick with using a silica gel pack. Oxygen absorbers have such specific requirements as to when they are appropriate to use but silica gel packs simply keep out any unwanted moisture and that’s basically what you’re looking for when you’re making something like this in a jar. Love, Mary

I will be a dehydrator wizard, hahahahahaha, you are so awesome Mary, I love you! I just bought and will be delivered today a Corosi dehydrator. I didn't like the one you use because you have to remove the door to see inside what is happening. I also bought over a year ago a collapsible dehydrator, I would not recommend this, the heat escapes everywhere because it is collapsible and uses a lot of electricity. It is not efficient at all; however, it will dehydrate the food, but it takes forever for this reason.

I wonder if i can use my small hydration oven pot for storing some dried vegetables. Sorry if my question is silly, but if you don't ask you won't learn. If you have a dehydrator with a temperature setting, you can dehydrrate foods on the lowest possible setting. I dry my basil and oregano between 95 - 120. This is too low for tomato & pepper as those turn black before drying out. Tomato & pepper are dried around 128-135. Other veg are dried between 120-145. Jerky of course we bring up to 165 and then the remaining time is at 145 to 155 depending on the type of meat (of course they're cured with Prague powder ahead of time). Your results may vary depending on moisture/ humidity and type of meat as well as the dehydrator used.

I like your meals in a jar method. 😊 I've seen others making meals in a bag. However, I don't buy their recipes bcz most of them are things my hubby won't eat. The ideas you shared today are things he would eat. I just have not had the time to learn how to freeze dry veggies yet. 🙃 I saw the mats you used, but I don't know if you put the mats in your freezer or if they go in a special machine. I'll keep watching. 😊🥰

How long would you keep these around before using them? Is the idea that you're going to use these a few times a week, on busy days, or a few times a month, or are they for emergencies? I would always like to hear more about when you use the things you make, because one of the things I struggle with is doing this like a crafts project, where I play around with dried macaroni and make pretty jars full of stuff, and then they sit in the pantry while we eat our "real" food.

When you dehydrated bone broth, 5 cups of broth equals 1/3 cups of powder. With the rice pilaf in a jar the recipe states to put 1/4 cup of dehydrated bone broth in the jar. Would this be a lot of powder for this recipe?

I have been wondering about the cooking time with dehydrated veggies toward pasta and rice. The brands I use here in Sweden takes between 7-12 minutes for pasta and 10-12 minutes for rice. Do the veggies really get soft and all cooked through at that time? I will make a test but I just wanted to point out a possibly problem.
Question: I dehydrated mixed veggies - corn, peppers and peas - and much of it fell apart into small pieces, almost dust. Did I dehyrdrate it to long or what happened?

yYou shouldn't put baking soda, baking powder together in storage meals. The leavening will activate and then deactivate and be useless. Also the salt added with the leavening ingredients will also work against the leavening. If humour going to store in a jar, separate the leavening agents into small zip top baggie and then combine when making the recipe.
