Rare Casey Kasem Interview - Beverly Hills High 1981

  • This is an extremely rare interview that I did with the late and extremely talented Casey Kasem in approx 1981 at the TV studios of Beverly Hills High School. Casey was kind enough to agree to come down to my high school after much gentle pestering by me over a period of months (he was working as I recall doing voice-overs at NBC along with his famous AT 40 show).
Casey truly opened up during the interview, and went over many long forgotten morsels of his TV and radio beginnings and his influences in the industry. My own interview skills were (admittedly) a bit rough (I was only 16 years old), but Casey didn't seem to care a bit and made every effort to peel back the layers of his take on the business and his opinions.
As many know, Casey almost never granted any interviews during his long and amazing career. If you search online you will see that Casey remained a very private person through his life, and it was truly an honor to have met and interviewed him while I was just a teenager.
Casey will be dearly missed - in so many ways he was the epitome of a professional and one of the most talented voice artists in the world. I found this old video a few weeks ago and transferred it to DVD so that everyone can enjoy perhaps a better peek behind the curtain of the amazing Casey Kasem. Enjoy!

There are interviewers three times this teen's age that could learn something from the way he handled himself. This was SUPERB

I truly enjoyed watching this. Casey was one of a kind -- the best radio host that I have ever heard. His down to earth style made him seem like you were listening to a friend. Great job and thank you for posting this.

What an inspiration to listen to this interview from 1981. 40 years later it is being enjoyed by many including me who holds Casey Kasem very high in esteem. I made a few notes while listening. Thanks for posting this hidden gem!

A crying shame only 2,700 views. But possibly only 1,500 people, if they watched it more than once. Compared to his (very few) other interviews, it's the only time Casey opened-up about his parents, his career (inc. his failures, which I didn't think he had). Then, a brief history of announcing -and other famous announcers.
    Good job...

What a phenomenal interview! With you being 16 years of age, your professionalism was very evident but this still felt very conversational and warm. I was told to look Casey up as a reference for my own voice and I came to find to this video and you happen to mention a relative. What are the odds?

Thank you for sharing this great interview! Waking up every Sunday morning and turning on the radio to listen to Casey’s show was something I looked forward to for many years. I was lucky enough to meet him in 2006 at his studio where I got to listen to him record an episode. He and his staff were so nice to me, and I even kept in touch with him for a few years after that before he passed away. I’m thankful he’s one of the reasons why I love doing what I’m doing as a DJ today, and I truly appreciate how he inspired me to do it through the friendship I had with him and because of his famous quote. “Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!”

At 16 you knew Larry King's (radio) interviewing secret by instinct - to listen and follow up using your innate curiosity. I think most interviewers do not. You made this interview great; I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Always loved his voice (although he himself calls the tone of his voice “garbage”). I listened to him on Top 40, Scooby-Doo, and Battle of the Planets before I knew what he looked like, and thought he’d look like Mark on BotP - a young, long-haired, cool Rock guy - not a clean-cut middle-aged Lebanese man. LOL!

Great to hear him say that he performed on radio such as Lone Ranger and Sgt. Preston. Many exist and would be great to hear one of his epusodes.

Isn't your high school the same one featured in It's a Wonderful Life (1946) with the retractable swimming pool thing? As I understand it, that thing still exists and works.
