  • This is an Audi GT that was left outside a workshop for over 7 years along with a BMW 2002. My buddy Levin from liftguysllc.com is cleaning out the shop and it's time to find the Audi & BMW a new home. I end up purchasing both vehicles and bringing them back to the AMMO Studio for a full detail with Kevin Brown (buffdaddy.com) and Jason Rose (Rupes USA). The GT turns out to be a challenging detail but we accomplish our goal of finding a new owner to get the Audi back on the road. Enjoy! - L

The “orange peel” at the bottom of the panels on the car is called rock guard.
I’m in the collision repair business and when we have to fix or replace a panel we have to apply the rock guard to match the rest of the rock guard from the factory. Usually is just a spray can. It is applied on top of the primer (because primer is designed to fill or build.) then you have to use sealer before you continue with base coat and clear coat to avoid the color of the roach guard material bleeding through.

Your BMW 2002 has round tail lights and chrome bumpers so it was probably made between 1968-1973. The 1974-1976 models had black rubber bumpers and square tail lights. Maybe yours was first titled in '74 (but was probably a '73 model). This car can sell for 10x what you paid for it, but seriously consider keeping it. These cars are super fun to drive and only going up in value. Awesome score!!!

The purpose of the "orange peel" on the rockers is because the rockers are sprayed with a heavy rubberized coating befor final paint that acts as a bit of protection against the rock chips and road grime like you have mentioned. It allows the paint to be chipped off without exposing bare metal.

Fuel pump and starter motor replaced at just over 210K. Oil changes were a snap. I did all the maintaining after the warranty expired and it was very simple and not expensive at all. Regret selling it.

  • @vincentlaguardiagambini9727

It's really neat seeing older cars get detailed by detailing channels. The industry probably wasn't as big as it is now back then so those cars didn't get the TLC they deserved back in the day. Now it is a treat for younger people who appreciate classic cars and a good detail (you can only watch so many modern sedans get detailed before you get bored lol!) but also for people who grew up with these cars and get to see them restored back to the condition of their glory days.

I was so waiting for this one! I had an '82 Coupe GT in college, and watching you detail this one brought back the countless hours 20 year old me spent detailing mine (Armour All and Maquire's, it was the '90s). At the end of the video, I was also reminded of the countless hours spent at Len Stoler Audi getting service :(. That said, I always thought that the raise spoilers came on later year cars ( mine was flush to the body color trunk lid), but this one had it. Since mine lacked bougie things like the leather, power windows, and multiple cracks on the dash (I only had one), I guess it was a trim level difference instead. I did have the optional leaking trunk though! Shame we could hear it fire up, as that inline sounds great. The car also handled really well,. Thanks for the video!

Great video Larry. It might be interesting to go more in depth on the orange peel on the rocker panels of some cars. It's not a painting technique per se, but a coating that is applied before paint. Almost like a lighter version of a spray on bed liner. Back in the day we called it chip guard.

    • @D_one

Chip guard is actually a different material sprayed on rockers before paint to help reduce chipping. Paint alone chips easily, but adding chip guard reduces it, but like you said, helps hide it with its texture as well. Kind of dual purpose. Most manufacturers know this and send vehicles out from the factory with it.

Well done to you for getting such a bargain. I hope the BMW finds itself a home where it can be treated with the respect it actually deserves. The round tail lights with the front pointed bumper-ettes indicate this is really a 1973!!! Which has a far better suspension and road feel than the 'water bed' ride of the square tail light lower horsepower 1974!

Then somewhere it ended up getting a bigger turbo and intercooler too .
That car as big as it was with 300 bhp and tons of torque . Was so much fun to drive .
Yet it just looked bog standard when parked.
