I've got to be honest, this is the best explanation of tank cycling i've watched. I'm a beginner, and unfortunately experienced the loss of fish because i didn't understand cycling. this video explained it perfectly, and I am going to the store right now to buy myself ammonia to start getting my bacteria growing. thank you so much.
this is extremely well explained. the only thing he didnt add was how much ammonia to add, which depends on how large your tank is (you can google an aquarium ammonia calculator for that) and to test it every few days with API master kit to make sure ammonia eventually goes down and spikes nitrite, and that repeats with nitrite into nitrate. your final readings should be 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and x nitrate. nitrates are brought down thru water changes and you want them below 40. once or twice a week should be sufficient. excellent vid :D
This is the best video I've found for how to cycle a fish tank. I'm new to this and want to do it right and this video made me feel confident that I can properly cycle a tank! I can't wait to see what else you have. Thanks for the awesome video!
Found this very helpful and a massive thumbs up on your ability to explain things in which not only did I understand and gain knowledge which I always wanted, but also enjoyed. Thanks a million.
Lol someone told me not to smell the ammonia I got for the tank, I took a slight whiff of 10% diluted ammonia and I think I died. It knocked the breath out of me, and your nose feels like it's on fire! Lol
just use api quick start and add your fish. I used half of the recommended dose once every three days and my gouramis are doing fine. make sure to add the right amount of dose before putting the fish in and then make sure to add half of the recommended dose once for at least 3 to 6 days.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I only start my adventure with fish now, and I needed this video badly to understand what's the cycle about! So much info everywhere and I'm slightly confused!
So how long would the cycle take if you do this process? I’m reading .50 ammonia and 0 for nitrate and nitrite. What do I have to do.. it’s been a week like that
Hi! If you’re not 100% sure whether your ammonia is safe for your tank then get some pure ammoniumchloride (pure means no additives added) ammoniumchloride is completely safe so you’re not taking any risks and it doesnt burn ur nose lol. 4.5 grams of ammoniumchloride (1 flat teaspoon) per 100 gallons brings ammonia concentration to 4ppm (4 mg per L). I had such a hard time finding ammonia here in europe because none of the bottles showed the ingredients so i wasnt completely sure if it was completely safe, i ended up buying a bottle of ammonia but i didnt use it cause i didnt want to take the risk. You can find pure ammoniumchloride online, i bought it for 3 euros.
Hello Andrew love your video! I have a question, would raising the temperature that high cause harm to my live plants? because I am starting up a fishless cycle on my Fluval edge 6 gallon which will be a shrimp tank with Dr Tims Amonia and of course Seachem stability as I swear by Seachem products, im going to fully stock it with all the plants i want from the start
Hope you are still out there. I added about 10ml (slowly)- Ace Hardware 10% Janitorial Strength Ammonia in a brand new 29 gallon freshwater tank. Have a hang on the back Marineland Penguin 200 bran new today and using an API Master Test kit my ammonia is still 0. Any thoughts?
Hi, the only heaters I have are preset ones to 78°, moneys tight. So, question : will that be sufficient? For my 10 gallons. I have a MTK, use it regularly. Air bubbles in all my tanks.
I’m about to fishless cycle my tank with Ammonia and stability, very easy to understand I’m using Dr Tim’s ammonia. Are you just following the instructions with the stability as it states on the bottle ie adding it everyday for a week?
Thank you for this video. I have two tanks. One is going through a FISH LESS cycle and the other a FISH IN cycle. I feel like im lost. Im just keeping an eye on my betta, keeping stress as low as possible ☹️ im also using prime and stability daily (20mns in between)
Hey any advise about used substrate ? I'm planning on bleaching the tank along with the decorations. Is bleaching substrate advisable? Just bought those. Just had bad luck with my fishes. They kept dying and just saw my rainbow shark pooping white and the water became cloudy overnight. Also can I use the same old tank to start a new one fishless?
Would this method allow me to remove all my fish to put them through a quarantine regiment and keep my main tank cycled adding ammonia as needed? When it converted to nitrates would I then water change that out like normal and then add more ammonia?
I love this explanation, thank you so much! I'm so glad that I had already planned to get a bubble wall before hearing your suggestion of aeration in the tank. My question is, should I be doing water changes while adding ammonia and Stability or should I just add them and leave the tank alone through the whole cycle? Thanks!
Your video gives a great explanation of fishless cycling. I have been doing this for 3months now and my tank has not even started making nitrites. pH 8.0 Ammonia 3+ Nitrites 0 Nitrates 0 for 3months! Gonna just give in and get a couple fish. It's insane having an empty tank for 3+ months.
Thank you so much, you make it very understandable! I just bought a 5.5 gallon kit 3 days ago and haven't had fish in decades and was nervous about doing the water correctly. Can you tell me how long do I cycle the water and when I'll know when the water will be right to add the fish? Thank you so much!!
When you have no ammonia, no nitrites, and a bunch of nitrates. That said you don't have much room. Adding too many fish will crash your cycle. Stick to a betta or to nano fish like microrasboras.
Hard to get straight Ammonia here. I am going old schoolish. Trying Seachem Stability and Microbe Lift Gel Filter Start. But using dead shrimp and some fish food to get some source of Ammonia. If it works quickly great. If not I will just wait it out for a few weeks until testing shows the tank is fish ready.
i have followed your tutorial, using the addition of seachem stability and followed the instructions according to the bottle, i have been using this for a few weeks now and my master test kit still indicates 0.50 ppm of ammonia and 2.0ppm of nitrite, what am i doing wrong? :(
Does any of the filter media, such as the filter foams (course, medium, & fine) need to be removed from my canister filter in order to do a fishless cycle using Seachem Stability?
Just a quick question. How fast can .5 to 1 ppm ammonia kill goldfish? I'm trying to eliminate possibilities. I test my water every two days. Parameters were normal and I came out this morning to find I lost my whole aquarium. I am assuming because a fish died the day before of death roll. Cause unknown.
How long does it normally take for you to cycle a tank? I have a 40 gallon and have been using ace ammonia and stability. I'm on day 4 and have kept ammonia at 2ppm with no nitrite reading. My tank is 80 degrees F. Thanks.
I have a question not a comment, I was setting up my aquarium to cure before I put my fish in and I never got my fish, but I kept the filter going and a month down the line,.I noticed this slime ( real gooy stuff ) on my aquarium surface and the decorations etc. I now have cleaned everything out including rocks, decorations and the aquarium filter. So this does not happen again, what actually happened?
I used dr Tim’s ammonia and used the recommended amount in my 125 gal, I’m only showing 2 ppm ammonia, l used the bacteria balls (4 bags) that came with the bio home ultimate, not sure if your familiar with those, but it’s been 3 weeks now and I’m still showing 2 ppm ammonia 0 nitrite, not sure what to do now wondering if I should add more ammonia and the seachem stability.
Use the *SEACHEM Stability* . Don't add more Ammonia immediately. *S S* is Spores, NOT Bacteria so a short time "to hatch". Also the Ammonia Bacteria establish, then produce the Nitrite that the Nitrite Colony needs. So it is actually 2 Stages.

Yes you cycle the aquarium regardless of temp or fish species. The cycle is done when you have no ammonia, no nitrites and 20-40ppm of nitrates. That's when you add fish.
Stability works great but water conditions are different across the country...they say your tank will be cycled in 7 days or so but it takes longer... stability provides the spores that becomes the bacteria that cycles the tank but it also eats ammonia which is how it turbo cycles with a "fish in" cycle... Stability is meant to cycle your tank with fish in it, not the ammonia route. By the way, the anaerobic bacteria eats the by product of the cycle - Nitrates...but it won't survive in any HOB filter or canister filter because in order for anaerobic bacteria to survive, you need a very low flow, low oxygen environment...that is only sustainable in a sump that has different sections where you can have very low flow of water moving across it...for the regular fishkeeper, you remove nitrates with water changes on weekly/monthly schedules.
Darryl Ashe it's always a variable on how long it'll take. Depends on how much biological media you have , how hot you have the water, and how much ammonia is added and how frequent water changes are. it should take around two to three weeks to fully cycle via a fishless cycle like the one I have demonstrated. What if your tanks beneficial bacteria suddenly "drops dead" (crashes) on you and your tank is filled with plants? I don't think I'd be pulling out the plants just to propagate the beneficial bacteria that comes in a bottle (stability)?
Im gonna try that. My sister's tank ive been trying to get cycled and that seacem stuff seams good. Im going to have to try it. I havent put a heater in it because its for Axolotls. I do have a spare 100w that i can use.
So I have a 10 gallon tank but I don't have a filter or a heater. I have an air pump that came with another tank. I put my female betta and 3 african dwarf frogs in the tank. How would I cycle my tank? Is it absolutely necessary? Should I add the bacteria with my frogs and betta in the tank or take them out and put them in another tank? Please help!!!
Do a 25% Water Change. Get the Ammonia DOWN to 3.0ppm Maximum. Over 4.0ppm Ammonia is TOXIC to the Bacteria. Also *SEACHEM Stability* is Spores NOT "Live Bacteria", so short hatching time. The other reply is Correct about it's too soon to see results. About 2 weeks normally.
I dosed my 36 gallon bowfront with ammonia up to about 3-4 ppm and did stability for 7 days. No drop in ammonia, and no rise in nitrites or nitrates and I'm currently on day 18 of cycling. The ammonia has just stayed the same and I'm kind of wondering what to do. 2 days ago, I did a large water change and am now down to about 0.5 ppm ammonia. Maybe I had too many ppm for the stability to work? I don't know. But something isn't going right. Any ideas?
when do I re-add ammonia? Do I need to wait both ammonia and nitrite gets back to 0 or just ammonia reaches 0 is fine? but my nitrite is still around 1 when ammonia is 0
I know this is 5 months later but to me, it sounds like your Nitrites are still feeding (Ammonia). What are your Nitrates? If your Nitrates are still high, they are still feeding on the Nitrites.
Hi! Can someone tell me if cycling only is done to new tanks? That is to say, if I am not doing a full water change, I don't need to do anything to "cycle" the tank? Thanks!
The act of starting the cycle is done to a new tank, but the cycle should always continue by itself once the bacteria is established in the filter. You should never change 100% of the water, as you may remove a large amount of the beneficial bacteria that free floats in the water, as well as accidentally swing parameters that would stress the inhabitants. Instead, change only 20% of the water once a week. This is a general rule, and is not always a one-size-fits-all rule, but it's a good place to start.
Hell, in this video, you could of used your soiled pair of socks as your ammonia source instead of that bottled ammonia. Just drop it in that fish tank and guaranteed to NUKE everything in there, water and all.
sorry, I read that as "fish" and not "fish food" I personally don't do it like that because I like to measure the amount of ammonia being used. So I've never personally done it like that, So i don't do it like that. in my experience, food left out for too long will become moldy in the tank. I'd rather not have tank mold.
I just cycled my tank with fish in using both seachem prime and stability every day for 2 weeks then test until you have 40 ppm nitrates then do your first water change
That's still chemicals. Ammonia is ammonia, it doesn't matter if it comes from a bottle or from rotting food. Why wait a month or two for something that could be done in a week?
Hi everyone! All Fish related video will now be posted on my new channel, Profiles Aquatica

the bottle only costs $2-3
its much more controlled and easy to regulate. I'd says thats worth the extra few penny's =)
how often do you put the ammonia drops in? 1 time, or throughout the entire cycle.
I agree
John Camping Golf you keep up with it to keep your ppm levels of amonia between 2-3
@@GolfMotionAcademy you keep putting it in until it's fully converted to nitrate, then you add hardy fish
this is extremely well explained. the only thing he didnt add was how much ammonia to add, which depends on how large your tank is (you can google an aquarium ammonia calculator for that) and to test it every few days with API master kit to make sure ammonia eventually goes down and spikes nitrite, and that repeats with nitrite into nitrate. your final readings should be 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and x nitrate. nitrates are brought down thru water changes and you want them below 40. once or twice a week should be sufficient. excellent vid :D

Thank you so much, it was easy to understand. My new aquarium self was a bit overwhelmed but you made it so simple.
Fantastic. You voice makes it extremely watchable.
Found this very helpful and a massive thumbs up on your ability to explain things in which not only did I understand and gain knowledge which I always wanted, but also enjoyed. Thanks a million.
no doubt this is by far the best explanation for aquarium set up
This was so helpful- thank you so much for explaining it in a way beginners can understand!
Just had to restart from scratch and this video was AMAZINGLY CLEAR. Thank you.
Thank you for the advice. Best I've ever got.
Lol someone told me not to smell the ammonia I got for the tank, I took a slight whiff of 10% diluted ammonia and I think I died. It knocked the breath out of me, and your nose feels like it's on fire! Lol
Maddie Equestrian Yeah that stuff packs a serious punch
andrewesquivel yeah that stuff is only allowed to be opened up within a fumehood in the labs 😬 doing so would be in violation of oh&s
Think how the poor fish must feel.
Donya Lane nah the nitrogen cycle with ammonia feeding is with an empty tank. No fish there 👌👌
@yannie1012, understood... I was talking about when people don't maintain their tanks and the fish suffer.
just use api quick start and add your fish. I used half of the recommended dose once every three days and my gouramis are doing fine. make sure to add the right amount of dose before putting the fish in and then make sure to add half of the recommended dose once for at least 3 to 6 days.

Easy to understand👍 great video, I would recommend to newbie
Thanks for the good info...Looking forward to getting into tanks again after a long break.. Can u use this method when setting up with live plants?
Very thorough video!!
does anyone know, after you do this, how long you have to wait afterwards?
So how long would the cycle take if you do this process? I’m reading .50 ammonia and 0 for nitrate and nitrite. What do I have to do.. it’s been a week like that
Thank you!! Subscribed!!
OK my question is can I use see cams stability and APIs safe plus start at the same time in a fresh new tank?
I got a splash of that in my shirt and I thought it was water and smelled it, my brain hurt SO BAAADDDDD
Oh my goodness your voice is amazing! Lol sounds like Toy Story :)

Dr. Tim's One and Only works very well too.

GREAT explanation. Have you ever used Seachem's Stability? I'm to the store now, to buy my ammonia, and a power strip for my new 5 Gal nano tank.
Cool im currently use ADA amazonia soil that release ammonia.
If I'm using media and sponge from another used tank how long will it take to cicle my tank?.
Hey any advise about used substrate ? I'm planning on bleaching the tank along with the decorations. Is bleaching substrate advisable? Just bought those. Just had bad luck with my fishes. I am about to cycle a 5 gal tank for a betta fish, what adjustable heater should I get ?
so how long should I wait to cycle a tank if my tank is only 7 gallons using the stability
It should take about 6 to 7 weeks
Check out the online calculators for adding ammonia: www.tropicalfishforums.co.uk/index.php?page=17
Just a guide, so don't add all at once!
I should also add that I used Prime when I set up my tank. Was this a mistake?
Hey there, good info. Question...Do you add ammonia AND seachem, or one of them ? Thx
Both
Can I add the old water from my already cycled tank during water changes to my new tank to help it cycle?

Can i use API Stress Zyme+ ?
You saved my fishes! Ty
Can those fish pellets for bottom feeders build up ammonia or did petco lie to me again
yes you can use fish food as your ammonia source but you wont have as abundant population of bacteria as if you used the pure ammonia route
i have followed your tutorial, using the addition of seachem stability and followed the instructions according to the bottle, i have been using this for a few weeks now and my master test kit still indicates 0.50 ppm of ammonia and 2.0ppm of nitrite, what am i doing wrong? :(
Ben Rhodes add seachem prime and try again later.
Does any of the filter media, such as the filter foams (course, medium, & fine) need to be removed from my canister filter in order to do a fishless cycle using Seachem Stability?
No. You need those mediums to cultivate and house the bacteria. It's less cycling the water, and much more cycling the equipment.

Usually a month
Great video bro 👍
How much would I need to put in a 200L tank?
I have a question not a comment, I was setting up my aquarium to cure before I put my fish in and I never got my fish, but I kept the filter going and a month down the line,.I noticed this slime ( real gooy stuff ) on my aquarium surface and the decorations etc. I now have cleaned everything out including rocks, decorations and the aquarium filter. *S S* is Spores, NOT Bacteria so a short time "to hatch".
Also the Ammonia Bacteria establish, then produce the Nitrite that the Nitrite Colony needs. So it is actually 2 Stages.
Very imprecise about ammonia quantities
great video love the commend that "the bacteria is poopin'"
How often do you add the bacteria?
Excellent.
I'm unable to math please HELP! I have a 15 gallon tank so can someone please tell me EXACTLY how much Stability I need to add to the water? Thank you anyone!
Marleny Rafferty 8 drops per gallon the first time. Then 4 drops per gallon for 7days
I have a 10 gallon. The instructions said 1 full capfull for a 10, and a half capfull thereafter.
If I've got my math right, you should add 1.5 capfulls on the first day, and 3/4 capfulls thereafter.
Lol if you can’t read simple instructions you should stay away from this hobby 🤣
~What kind of canister filter do you have?????
So if i added fish food to my tank to speed up the cycle, how long would it be before i could add my fish?? Same with if i add tetra safe start? Do you cycle a cold water aquarium? sorry im quite new to fish keeping and dont know much about the nitrogen cycle.
Yes you cycle the aquarium regardless of temp or fish species. The cycle is done when you have no ammonia, no nitrites and 20-40ppm of nitrates. That's when you add fish.
If I just use natural ocean water or water from the old tank, do I still have to go through the Nitrogen cycle?
Yes. The only way to "instantly cycle" a tank is to out your old (uncleaned) substrate and filter media in your new tank.
Is it over doing it or is it OK keep in mind I'm trying to cycle a new tank 15 and a 20 gallon
nice one cheers. How long does it take to cycle with that seachem product?
Darryl Ashe it's always a variable on how long it'll take. Depends on how much biological media you have , how hot you have the water, and how much ammonia is added and how frequent water changes are. it should take around two to three weeks to fully cycle via a fishless cycle like the one I have demonstrated. A fish based cycle will take longer
Did you add ammonia with the stability? or is it just stability?
Pa. Fish Preacher both. The ammonia feeds the bacteria.
This is a very good video on how to cycle but how do you do it with a fish in it, do you just moderate it with the freshwater kit or what?
so let me get this straight you put the the safestart and then add emonia and crank the heat up and wait?
What if your tanks beneficial bacteria suddenly "drops dead" (crashes) on you and your tank is filled with plants?
I don't think I'd be pulling out the plants just to propagate the beneficial bacteria that comes in a bottle (stability)?
Very nice detail explanation could you please tell me which test result shows that tank has been cycle
Ashwin Mistry when 4-8ppm of ammonia is converted to 0 ppm of ammonia, 0ppm of nitrite, and only has Nitrate in less than 24 hours
How long will it take ???
Im gonna try that. My sister's tank ive been trying to get cycled and that seacem stuff seams good. Im going to have to try it. I havent put a heater in it because its for Axolotls. I do have a spare 100w that i can use.
So I have a 10 gallon tank but I don't have a filter or a heater. I have an air pump that came with another tank. I put my female betta and 3 african dwarf frogs in the tank. How would I cycle my tank? Is it absolutely necessary? Should I add the bacteria with my frogs and betta in the tank or take them out and put them in another tank? Please help!!!
+Mariana Cervantes yes. Any aquatic life should have a fully cycled tank and filter. Anything less could be slowly killing them.
Mariana Cervantes hows your betta and frogs doing now?
I added the ammonia to 4ppm and correct dosage of stability...about 36 hrs still no conversion to nitrites and ammonia is still at 4ppm.
It's going to take a lot more than 36 hours. Typical time to cycle a tank is about a month
How much ammonia would I put in my 100 gallon Aquarium
A lot
3 bottles
I dosed my 36 gallon bowfront with ammonia up to about 3-4 ppm and did stability for 7 days. No drop in ammonia, and no rise in nitrites or nitrates and I'm currently on day 18 of cycling. The ammonia has just stayed the same and I'm kind of wondering what to do. 2 days ago, I did a large water change and am now down to about 0.5 ppm ammonia. Maybe I had too many ppm for the stability to work? I don't know. But something isn't going right. Any ideas?
Shanda B. Are you adding heat?
Water is set at 78 degrees, confirmed with my stick-on thermometer
Shanda B. Try closer to 90
It's one of those pre-set heaters. Do you think it's worth buying a different heater?
Shanda B. I only use aqueon pro heaters. Adjustable and reliable imo. Bacteria grows faster with heat.
I could hold my breath for a long time really well but my face turns blue
Are all those product really work? Or I just simply tap water, filter and heater to cycling ?
for how long i have to wait?
Can i just dose prime for starting a tank and never dose it again then i will stability for 7 days and just add fish food everyday?
yes
when do I re-add ammonia? Do I need to wait both ammonia and nitrite gets back to 0 or just ammonia reaches 0 is fine? but my nitrite is still around 1 when ammonia is 0
I know this is 5 months later but to me, it sounds like your Nitrites are still feeding (Ammonia). What are your Nitrates? If your Nitrates are still high, they are still feeding on the Nitrites.
@@sarge6870 My tank is fully cycled now after doing that for 2-3 weeks
Do I really need to have an air pump during the cicle?.
No, however it would help bc it gives the beneficial bacteria another surface to stick to. 🤙
Learnt heaps from this vid . Went through 2 bottles of stability and the water still did not cycle . Turn out the water was too cold 😐
@@andrewesquivel Ok thank you! So, If I have a little 5 gallon nanotank, I should be changing 20% of the water weekly/biweekly?
Hell, in this video, you could of used your soiled pair of socks as your ammonia source instead of that bottled ammonia. Just drop it in that fish tank and guaranteed to NUKE everything in there, water and all.
1 drop for every two gallons of water
instead of adding ammonia, can I use some fish food to start cycle??
yes, but most advise against it as it puts a lot of stress on the fish.
andrewesquivel i am talking of the fishless cycle.
sorry, I read that as "fish" and not "fish food"
I personally don't do it like that because I like to measure the amount of ammonia being used. So I've never personally done it like that, So i don't do it like that.
in my experience, food left out for too long will become moldy in the tank. I'd rather not have tank mold.
andrewesquivel hmmm, thanks. Appreciate the advise
I just cycled my tank with fish in using both seachem prime and stability every day for 2 weeks then test until you have 40 ppm nitrates then do your first water change
Can you also just use fish food? Doesnt that turn into ammonia
Just through food in every day wait a month or 2 and it will go cloudy then clear bam cycle.no chemicals nessisarry.
That's still chemicals. Ammonia is ammonia, it doesn't matter if it comes from a bottle or from rotting food. Why wait a month or two for something that could be done in a week?
Finally a good fucking video thanks
great job my friend
Just use powdered ammonia chloride. No smell. One teaspoon treats 100 gallons
Thanks to this
