Hugo Overview - Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike [4K]

- As you'd expect from the token grappler, Hugo is big, slow and powerful. What you might not expect is just how much room for expression they've packed into this German giant through his wide and varied toolkit.

Hugo used to scare the absolute piss out of me as a child. His creepy, uncanny face, his massive stature and slow walk, the cage in the background of his stage always made me think he was dangerous and needed to be locked up unless supervised. He’s an absolute beast of a character and they definitely gave him the vibe to match. Even at 30 years old, I still get a little nervous seeing him
No one likes Hugo. He doesn't have a fanbase.
@@philithegamer8265 oh nvm your just trolling, lol
He's so creepy, his sunken eyes and posture make him look like a zombie.
@@philithegamer8265 I like Hugo
This was because he was very flamboyant in his movement @@philithegamer8265
Hugo is love, hugo is life
Yes
@@CashKetchum718No one cares for Hugo. He doesn't have a fanbase.
@@philithegamer8265 Shut up troll, I see you spamming your nonsense. Reported. Keep playing shotos kid
@@nikmidclayton5933 Shutterwock from Hearthstone?!
@Phili the Gamer ya. I haven't playd HS in prob 4 or 5 years. Haven't changed my pic. It was my favorite card
No need to convince us of Hugo's strength after seeing Justin Wong get Daigo'd by him lol
Or MaxDood getting double perfected lol
Where to see that daigo vs jw video?
Justin Wong mains Chun Li, Daigo mains Ken. If you talking about who beat Justin Wong with Hugo, that is none other than the legendary Hayao.
The main comment was talking about how a Hugo player Daigo-parried JW, not Daigo playing Hugo
My favorite Street Fighter character, Hugo goes so hard. PLEASE don't discount him just cuz he's not top tier, he's so fun and is still perfectly viable
No one likes Hugo though. He doesn't have a fanbase.
@@philithegamer8265...wat
@@philithegamer8265 just cuz u have no friends doesn’t mean there isn’t a Hugo fanbase
@@philithegamer8265 Very wrong and cringe of you to say
@ahmadadnan4773 LUL WUT?! Everyone likes Chun-Li, bruh. You're not allowed to say a bad thing about her online... you're part of Ken nation?
He's low tier in this game, but it's still a massive improvement over him being the worst character in the game like he was in Second Impact. Probably my favorite thing about Hugo is how his special intro with Alex is a reference to the Andre The Giant and Hulk Hogan face off from Wrestlemania.
He’s b tier
Hugo certainly isn't high tier or anything but the gap between him and Q, Remy, Sean and Twelve is actually pretty big
@@dyldragon1 The gap between Twelve and anybody is a canyon, he's probably the most unviable character Capcom's ever made.
@@melvinshine9841 True, I guess what I'm getting at is Hugo really ain't that bad in this game, definitely play him if you want to. Like many grapplers he's certainly has some heavy weaknesses but his strengths are massive
Personally I think he’s a mid tier. Don’t know why they think necro elena and even Q are as good as they do. Hugo has consistently shown far better results than the first 2.
By far the most interesting grappler in street fighter I have encountered. I prefer Hugo all day to Zangief.
It’s because Hugo isn’t a gimmick. He’s got a real kit instead of having nothing but a grab that ends his advantage.
@@Neogears1312 yes, he has so much more to rely on. I like it, it's always scary to face him.
As a brand new player in street fighter, I greatly appreciate these bite-sized guides.
Hugo has the clap? Hope he gets better
He really should see a doctor about that.
@@melvinshine9841 maby Dr.Steelhammer can help him with the claps, he can CRUSH them xD
@@melvinshine9841 It's ok it makes him plus
I hear he gave it to Donkey Kong...
man, i miss personal openings like this and never saw that one with Alex and hugo that was so cool SF needs to bring this back I would pay top dollar for things like this.
Don't worry Gigas,it's just the name of the move. Hugo won't hurt you.
His universal overhead is dope
Hands down, my favorite grappler! I’d love to see him in SFVI, seeing as it’s partially centered in and around Metro City!
Hugo Andore, the virtual image of Andre "the gigant".
"Please avoid all other heavies" No, no I don't think I will
Killing with butt smash is great BM
Not a big 3s guy but hugo and makoto definitely made me put more hours into this game than I probably would have because of how much damage you can do with a well-timed parry read.
I love grapplers :)
Visually, the animation and such of his moonsault press and gigas breaker was so nice in 3s.
When i saw him come out in later street fighters it was like , “what have you done?”
But it is, what it is, i guess.
My only wish is that 3rd strike came back but with like an update or something to breathe new life into it, that a lot of people would agree with and enjoy.
everyday we get closer to Alex and Remy, can't wait.
Was waiting for this!
I was surprised when the video ended, as something about the presentation really drew me in. I've never seriously considered playing Hugo before, but now I kind of want to pick him up.
Yesssss the one ive been waiting for!
Gigs backbreaker is best super in the game. So satisfying. And you didn't lie. Every time I hit that, I chanted with Hugo, einz, zwei, drei, ending!!!
On the plus side, it is fairly easy to hit the 720 after a parry like from a jump in.
Also, when I say best super, I mean most satisfying, along with kkz and Alex's backed opponent 360. Hitting those supers gives unparalleled levels of sf satisfaction.
Standing Medium Punch and crouching Light Punch gets SO MUCH mileage from me.
Against people that want to poke sMP is frustrating to deal with.
Landing SA1 is insanely satisfying.
It’s an ultra basically
I NEED HIM IN SF6!!!
Anybody who mains Hugo with Gigas Breaker needs to worship Hayao, God of Hugo SA1.
Parry a air attack while jumping with Hugo is a good to land a gigas breaker. Definitely a character that feels rewarding after you mastered Hugo.
I have to dissagre with the grab range of SA1, its close sure but for a command throw super the range is kinda insane, like a Kara throw.
Fair point, the wording does imply it's normal throw range when it's quite a bit bigger. Will reword for the compilation.
ya it's quite far, and i believe it comes out frame 0
@@ThatBlastedSalami Great videos overall, relly nice quick guides for new ppl
Agreed, that beast of a super has more range than his 360LP!
I absolutely love Hugo’s aesthetic, neeeeed him back in SF6.
His toolkit and 3rd strike mechanics easily make him the most fun grappler I've ever played!
He's definitely more than viable, you just need to tighten up your execution and work HARD on mental stack.
Nothing is more satisfying than getting into your opponents' head with this scary giant and making them freeze, SA1 Hugo forever ♥
Great video, I really hope my man returns in VI.
2 things worth mentioning is hammer mountain has I frames for punishes, and Hugo can punish parry. If they parry a light you can cancel it into spd and they’re just done.
Nice overview of Hugo. I knew i had to play the character after hayao parried chun's SA 2 into Gigas.
Just one note that needs to be fixed: Gigas range is actually really good. It reaches the farthest out all of his commands grabs, even farther than lp Moonsault Press.
Anyway good work so far in this series
thank you :D
Hugo's Heavies:
St.HP is an Overhead with very high damage and stun. Pretty good.
Cr.HP death on block, and you recover crouching, meaning you take more damage.
St.HK is an Overhead, but is death on block. Has insane pushback, but it being Frame 21 doesn't help.
Cr.HK starts as a low and becomes an Overhead on the later frames, but is death on block. Not just death, but -43. Over two thirds of a second.
F.HP misses a lot of crouchers, is slow, and death on block.
B.HK and F.HK are just his St.HK, but he moves back or forward during it kinda like Mika's St.MK in SFV. It also has 1 less recovery frame for some reason.
Look at that Gigachad Chin
While i dont usually play him, maaan do i love his stage!imagine his stage with sf6 graphics...
what's the deal with the alternate colour/time of day stages that show up in these videos? love this series btw!
Im pretty sure its a PAL MOD, it can be Installed in Fightcade 2 if you tinker some with the files, it's also possible to fix PAL MOD colors on stages & characters on CPS3 hardware, witch I have done, some stages get outright better like Elena and Ibuki stage, and Hugo stage get less green in the backrounds.
some ppl have done some insane customs, there should be a video about how to install it by Riiya on youtube.
Dunno why they're using them, but it's from a stage palmod pack I made (see: czcams.com/video/4THUKhm3CnE/video.html )
At least most of them are. I've noticed for the Gouki/Akuma video and for the Hugo video here they took my palmod colors and changed them a little for some reason (moving the hue/saturation of the whole stage by a little).
He enables player expression thanks to 3rd strike system mechanics. You could say that of any character.
3rd strike feels so good when you have solid reaction. I feel like street fighter 5 punishes counter based playstyles but 3rd strike lets you parry into super or ex counter moves which feels so much more satisfying.
@@HarmonicResonanceScale Yep, SF5 was all about relentless pressure... which is why they let you throw your opponent on frame 1 of their wakeup, where as 3s gives your opponent 3 frames of throw invincibility on their wakeup. This makes you have to earn your oki pressure with mindgames, rather than a rock paper scissors guess as is seen in SF5 and most modern fighting games.
@@anti-nephilimgovernmentage5471 Actually you can't grab before frame 3. It feels like frame 1 in practice because a frame 3 throw will beat any normal due to the SF5 priority system.
I fuckin' love his sprite. It's so good!!
Still haven’t played this game and this SF just looks so cool! Tekken fan, but soon it might be time to mess with this cool looking game.
It's the best SF game. If the roster was bigger it'd be very very very good. Glhf
easily the must fun I have playing this game is picking hugo 🤗
I dunno if I'd call Gigas very short range, it's got more range than a shoto crouching LK
what version of the song is playing towards the end?
Never been a fan of this big guy, but even if you don't like him, you can't deny his theme is fire.
His theme is top tier for sure
Q's next & I can't wait! He's below Hugo? That's surprising I thought he was really low!
I will continue to vouch for Hugo crHK as a usable normal
As you should
Until somebody parries it then your neg forever
@@volvomoneygang1178 that's why I reserve it as a low poke callout
I do think it can be useful for cr.mk spammers but Id keep it in my back pocket until I really need it
1 2 3 enddddd love that move

Is the crouch jab > crouch jab > clap supposed to combo, or is that just a frame trap?
Hugo is my main in this game.
hey, whats this remix from?
Hugo is fucking awesome
I just bought this on ps2 he's pretty fun sadly got nobody to play with
I'm not gonna sugarcoat it.
*214 + P*
When I was child, he looks scary to me.
Hugo's one of the oddly rare cases where he has multiple, equally useful supers that heavily effect playstyle
Super1 is THE highest damage super in the game, but since it gives you only one bar of meter to work with, EX moves are out of the question and thus your win condition becomes building up your meter as fast as possible and landing that Gigas Breaker, so Super1 Hugos lean more into the stereotypical Grappler playstyle of spam big buttons in neutral, land grab, go home
Super3 on the other hand is the complete opposite, Hammer Fall is generally applicable in all matchups and is rather easy to hit confirm and gives you a LOT of meter to play with, and with all that meter Hugo is allowed the leg room to use all those EX moves that give him the best combo damage and juggles, like hitconfirming into EX Lariat or getting really good clap loops with EX Clap, so the Super3 Hugo lends himself to being more like a Brawler type Grappler who prioritizes hit confirming into combos and using their grabs less as their main damage source and more as their main way to start their ludicrous pressure and combo strings, basically Super3 Hugos treat Ultra Throw how a Super1 Hugo would treat SPD
Super2 isn't very often picked and is generally picked in those air heavy match-ups that Hugo really doesn't like, stuff like Ibuki, Twelve, or that one Necro player (you know the one) and Super2 does give you a decent middle ground between S1 and S3 with giving you decent meter and also being a huge fuck off command grab but isn't really used anywhere beyond being a match-up bandaid
SA3 doesn't necessarily mean the grappler play style is out of the question, EX 360s are still very powerful and make his mixup more even in power distribution. Making your opponent equally scared of getting hit with a super cancellable normal and a big command grab is exactly what a grappler wants.
yeah that's why I often use SA3 with Hugo and only do SA1 sometimes, Ultra throw to clap to backbreaker in corner might be Hugo's most satisfying combo.
SA2 sucks, it has no invincibility which means it loses to air buttons, basically forcing you to always parry super (which can also mean missing out on a super because of empty jumps)
YSB Gang rise up !
Man. Gigas can't catch a break.
YSB
Isn't jump hk kinda good? It's real big
Eccolo mio padre.
eins, zwei, *DREI*
and whatever the hell four means in German.
VIER!
@@jinpei05 vier deez nuts
hugo de naranja
Gigas IS NOT a short ranged grab, that thing has reach, obviously it's a command grab so I can't snipe you across the screen with it. But I've clutched rounds with SAI because of its range, it's not something to be underestimated.
I have played hugo for hours and I just learned lariat is 236 and not 41236
And here we though Ken was the king of Sugarcoating in SF3, we got the Andre Ripoff from Germany.
Also...who's here for the atomic bomb memes by @ThatShoryuKid ?
This sounds like a mostly shining overview, but is still considered 'A little weak'?
Ein… Zwei… Drei, END!
Hugo players on 3rd strike can casualy Daigo parry as any moment
i'm suprised you didn't talk about his meat squasher (360 + K)
He did. He just forgot to mention you can juggle with standing mp as a juggle afterwards.
I didnt even know he was a character lol
Yooo
Ah yes, no mention of super 2...just like how it should be.
Hayao
"Hugo was the claps" what? he needa see a doctor
the street fighter character i like the least. vid still goes hard.
For a big dumb grappler, he sure needs big brain to play
