- [Part 1 of 8] Missa Cantata, or sung Low Mass, offered on the Last Sunday after Pentecost at the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Nicholas of Chardonnet in Paris, France.
This is the Eucharistic liturgy of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church celebrated according to the 1962 Roman Missal (Missale Romanum), also commonly referred to as the Tridentine Rite, or Tridentine Mass, or Tridentine Latin Mass, or Old Latin Mass, or classical Latin Mass, or Traditional Latin Mass (TLM).
This same Mass may be viewed or downloaded on Google as one full-length video: video.google.co...
A "missa cantata" is an approved form of celebration of the Traditional Roman Rite of Mass which serves as a compromise between a Low Mass (which involves no music or incense, by definition) and a Solemn High Mass (which has strict instructions and requirements for celebration that cannot be met in many parishes). For more information, please read this fine article in the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia: www.newadvent.o...
The texts of the Latin prayers, and English translations of the same, which are common to every Traditional Latin Mass can be found here: www.sacred-text...
And here I am, 16 years later, still attending the TLM.
The best priests whom I have known gravitated toward the Tridentine Mass. Let us pray that it may come back.
I miss the Tridentine Rite but I don’t think we will see it’s rebirth.
@@skylarjxdn7648 Actually, it is growing in leaps and bounds. Viva Cristo Rey!
Hoping to God a Tidentine Latin Mass will be again celebrated in all the Catholic Church in the Philippines... Amen
This was 14 years ago. Thank God for the spread of Tradition
The processional organ melody is: Claude Gervaise - Deux Branles de Champagne
Thumbs up so everyone can see!
I love u
This mass is what has catechised me. From being a complete modernist I have now gained a better understanding of Who the Eucharist is. That is the King of the Universe who humiliates Himself for us every Holy Mass.
Very nice to see how these French Roman Catholic mothers teach their little boys and girls the Christian faith and the love of Our Lord. God bless the holy Roman Church and this, her holy, Roman Liturgy of all apostolic ages.
Beautiful mass, let's all pray for it's return!
We go to the Tridentine Mass every Sunday and Cannon douses us with holy water every time! He makes sure to hit everybody! 😄
Beautiful Mass.......much better than Lutheran services.
This Mass is enriched with Tradition, symbolism, and beautiful Gregorian chant.
I attend Latin tridentine Mass on Milwaukee's Southside. Beautiful. absolutely lovely.
First time I see a latin mass. It's very beautiful and impressive.
Legend
So beautiful! May we have more and more masses like this!
YES! Thank You Lord for hearing my prayer that my local parish will be having a Tridentine Mass this Jan 20! Deo Gratias!
This is so beautiful and I am looking forward to being able to attend a church within an hour drive. So holy and reverant and tradtional. I agree that Vatican II has really changed things and I became a Catholic after VII. This might be one of the reasons some people have left because we were no longerCatholic enough.
I almost cried while watching this. It is so beautiful. NOW THIS IS WORSHIP!!! All glory to God.
This is so reverent and beautiful! I pray that the faithful there 17 yrs ago are still in love with The Lord and attending Mass in this incredible Church.
Que dieu bénisse les prêtres de la FSSPX de nous avoir gardé cette messe sacrée.
This is beyond words, so beautiful...
greetings from the Orthodox church in India - Beautiful mass!
I'm so awaiting the motu poprio the pope is going to unveil to the public in this month! Hopefully a congregation will find together in my area and starts efforts to get a tridentine mass around here. It's so beautiful to see a church which is so full of people, I hope the latin and the regulated liturgy will give the church back its unity it always proclaims. With this mass, every Catholic will feel at home every where around the world!
Absolutely beautiful, thank you very much! I'm OK with the vernacular Mass personally, but I do think every Catholic should go to one Tridentine Mass at least once to be in touch with their history and tradition. Peace be with you brother/sister!
Essa é a Missa que nunca morrerá. Deo gratias.
"I am a priest who for over ten years collaborated in a work that became a notable harm to the Catholic Faith.
I wish now to apologize before God and the Church and to renounce decisively my personal sharing in that damaging project.
I am speaking of translating the new post-Vatican II Latin liturgy into the English language, when I was a member of the Advisory Board of the (I.C.E.L.)."
It waters down the doctrine that the Eucharist is a true Sacrifice."
-John Smith, Jan 19, 2005.
God bless you Father, you have confessed your sin. The new Mass is sinful and it has led many away from our Lord, Christ Jesus.
Fr. Smith, I hope you are promoting the TLM and say this Mass exclusively! God bless you. I'm aware your comment is from 12 years ago (!!)
We attended the Latin Mass on East Sunday in 1996 at this church.
This restores my faith in the French. They're not all atheists, I see.
Assasincomedy thanks so much! The whole Mass was so wonderful. I hope to attend Mass in this church soon.
We are waiting for the Motu Proprio of His Sanctity. It would be ready tomorrow (Thursday), however in this month. Then we'll have the chance to attend Traditional Mass in our Diocese. God bless us all
Wunderschön 🙏🙏🙏
I wish I could go to a Mass like that!
"Omnes semper - ad Jesum, per Mariam, cum Petro"
Thank you for your response. The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom shows no signs of decline. Actually, for us Eastern Catholics, the Second Vatican Council was very liberating, as it gave us the encouragement to maintain (and in some cases, restore) our own traditions.
If anyone is in the Boston area there is an amazing church in Lawrence MA that has high Mass every Sunday 10am low Mass all week 8am.
Wonderful.
God bless the holy Roman Church and the Society of St. Pius X which has upheld Catholic Tradition so bravely! Viva Cristo Rey!
Asperges me hyssopo, et mundabor lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.
Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper,
et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
The traditional, ancestral, organically formed, Roman Rite of the Holy Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church. Deo gratias!
Beautiful.
The Mass was celebrated by the SSPX. They kind of just occupied this Church one day......and I'm happy they did it!
thank you for this videos! very interesting and wunderfully impressions!!! greetings from germany!
this is the future of the Church!!!!!
VIVA CRISTO REY!!!
I am a Ukrainian (Byzantine Rite) Catholic. We are in communion with the Apostolic See in Rome, and we use the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. We also ordain married men to the priesthood. Although we are not Roman Catholic, we are Catholic, and we are in full communion with the Pope in Rome. Please investigate us.
Awe-inspiring.
q hermoso!! amo la misa tridentina!! viva Cristo rey, y viva lefebvre! y el santo papa benedicto XVI.
gloria in excelsis deo.
I as well. I do find it better to meditate throughout the mass. I do know my prayers and Gregorian.
I agree Latin and Greek are beautiful languages to worship our Lord in. It is very sad that Priests ttoday do not know Latin. Unfortunatly the Holy Father made it optional. So Priests decided if they want to say the mass in Latin. There are a few churchs that have stayed with the Latin Mass but they broke away from the Catholic church.
I hAve always had an interest about the Orthadox church I think it's great how your serivces haven't changed.
Echtes Gottesdienst!

exactly! well said
Can anyone tell me what is the name of praeludium played during procession? Thanks... :)
+Ivan Jordan: It's "Deux Bransles du Champaigne" of Claude Gervaise. Salut!
Do you honestly think that saying Mass is the only function of a parish priest? He needs to worry about collecting enough money, paying the bills, dealing with irate and otherwise difficult parishioners, and other unglamorous aspects. And the Roman Catholic church denies him even the comfort and benefit of a wife and family. In the Eastern Catholic Church, in full communion with Rome, married men are ordained to the priesthood.
@Chichiri520 Nice to see that when you were on this week you kept quiet!
One reason that very few priests will offer a Tridentine Mass is that very few know how to do it. No priest under 70 would have any personal experience with the Tridentine Mass, and many from that era are much older or deceased.
Any way, I am a catholic so I forgive you. Any way , here is my point of view of all this: The SSPX is doing a good thing in my oppinion keeping the Latin rite alive in the holy mass, and I think that this mass is beautiful.. If I had the chance to see one I wouldn't miss it.
What I'd give to go to a parish that was packed with people on Sunday
There are 5 Masses every Sunday with a total congregation of about 8,000 people. Only the Tridentine Latin Mass is said in this church. I think that the 8 Mass and 18.30 are a low Masses and the 9 and 10.30 are Missa Cantata and the 12.15 is a High Mass.
The altar boys are young and, as the saying goes, boys will be boys. They will soon learn.
I didn't say that frech CANNOT use it, I said that the french costum is not to wear birettas, it's different.
@Menechem I may be a member of a Southern Baptist Church, but I am welcomed at the Pentecostal Church that supports my Pastors cause in raching Jews with the Gospel (he is Jewish BTW).
How about a topping on the communion wafer?
Possibles could include peanut butter, whipped cream,
plum jam.
For cheese lovers there could be french onion dip,
blue vein cheese, or the economical cheddar.
What do you plum for?
Thanks!
that cope is beutiful
2 things: current languages always change. E.g. the original translation of "Dignum et iustum est" was "it is meet and just", which does not make sense anymore. Since Latin is a dead language, the meaning remains constant.
2nd: You once were able to go to any city in the world with your Latin->English missal and be able to follow the mass, and converse with the clergy in Latin. In this way Latin mitigated the punishment of the tower of Babel.
ASPERGES me, * Domine, hyssopo et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. Ps 50, 3. Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. V. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. R. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc et semper, et in sćcula sćculorum. Amen. Ant: Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.
I am Catholic and believe in the Messiah, but I also believe in obeying Scripture which tells us to hold fast to the traditions of the apostles, written and unwritten (II Thes. 2.14).
Stop following traditions of men invented 1500 years after Christ, and obey the Church which Jesus Christ founded and which Scripture calls the pillar and foundation of truth (I Tim. 3.15). Repent and follow Christ in his Church.
Does anybody know what song the organist is playing during the precession? Beautiful
I think this phobia will recede whereupon the rebellious generation that gave us forty years of abysmal liturgy begins to die off (for lack of a better phrase!). I have hope, and hope gives rise to faith. Pray constantly.
It's the church of St. Nicholas du Chardonnet in Paris.
All the same, I am thankful for the indult Mass. If you didn't guess already, I would be in a different rite were there an Eastern Catholic church anywhere in the vicinity of my home. As it is, the Latin Mass is the only place wherein I can receive solid liturgy and good theology. Rmember, beliefs are upheld by liturgy, and so the indult Mass is a victory in that wise.
This is a beautiful mass, but is it really necessary to have twenty acolytes for one mass? they tend to crowd up the altar a bit.
if you ask me, if I would be some parish priest I would ask the bishop's permission to allow one tridentine mass on a sunday, if for example on sunday there are 5 celebrations, 1 of them be celebrated high mass in Roman rite. therfore people who feel attached to this mass can attend this one the rest attend to which they want, like that every one is happy.
@ismacuab I don't know, but I've transcribed the principal theme and used it (with improvised episodes) to similar effect at the beginning of Mass.
DanVilAl I thank you for calling me a Liar
I have a question about the Greek Orthadox Faith. I know you that you have Patriarchs(sorry if I spelt that wrong). Now is the Bathalamew II the Patriarch for all Greek Orthadox or just those in Turkey?
Can only judge the Dutch situation. The only church that is full on sunday in Amsterdam is the St. Agnes. There you'll get a tridentine mass. Many young people. In the Dominican Modernist Church around the corner 50 retired old people attend the sloppy novus ordo.
We will have to do this At the basilica in dc
Get a missal! I have a Spanish one! You can find them online, it will change your life!
Question, why are the Sanctus bells not rung at the Sanctus in the Novus Ordo mass in the Vaticano II didn’t ban it?
There is no war between the Society of St. Pius X and the traditional Vatican Holy See. Only seemingly. Hosanna Filio David!
Thisa beautiufl mass, but is it really necessary to have twenty acolytes for one mass? they tend to crowd up the latar a bit.
@drupes So be it. There are many who call themselves Catholics who don't want us to defend the truth or preach the Way. They say that the Church is not necessary for salvation, they distort and tear down the true message of the Gospel, thus interpreted by the ordinary and extraordinary Magesterium for 1900 years or more.
@brndurham Usually for the Missa cantata (like in this video) or in the high mass, more servers are called to sit in choir and have the benefit of participating in mass in the sanctuary itself. But in the low mass it is rarer. And of course, this may depend from priest to priest.
It may be his second or even third mass of the day. To say nothing of visiting, teaching etc. priests work much harder now than formerly as there ais a grave shortage of men willing to put themselves through seminary.
well, the older 5 in front assist the priest during mass. all the other young ones in back are optional & don't do much during the ceremony. at some churches like mine, there are barely enough servers to fill the 5 needed positions, so extra torch-bearers (which I assume the little ones to be) arent use except for big feast days like easter.
@DarkWaveSurfer123
Asperges is ONLY sung on Sunday, at High Mass and only at the Principal Mass of the Sunday.
French priests do not use to wear birettas.
The vernacular lessons are after the latin ones, it's been done this way for many years.
yes
Nicholas of Chardonnet, Nickey must have been a wineo to get such a distinction as Nickey of Chadonnet!
Hi Evelyn and Abigail
"For the correct formation of the liturgical conscience, it is important to stop condemning the liturgical form as it was known up to 1970. Those, who at this moment defend the validity of the traditional liturgy or its continued use, are treated like lepers: all tolerance for them ceases to exist. In the whole history of the Church we have never before seen such intolerance manifested!
Joseph Ratzinger
Just A question. When I was in France, No one went to church. In fact they seemed to look on the Cathedrals and churches as museums and worse. Where is this?
Does anybody have any information about how the SSPX is doing? Has there been any large ruptures since uniting with Rome? How big is the SSPX now?
Furthermore, by these presents [this law], in virtue of Our Apostolic authority, We grant and concede in perpetuity that, for the chanting or reading of the Mass in any church whatsoever, this Missal is hereafter to be followed absolutely, without any scruple of conscience or fear of incurring any penalty, judgment, or censure, and may freely and lawfully be used.- Quo Primum
Does anyone know what the very first organ piece is called?
LETTER OF THE PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
Under signature of Edward I. Cardinal Cassidy, President (May 3,1994)
"The situation of the members of this Society [SSPX] is an internal matter of the Catholic Church. The Society is not another Church or Ecclesial Community in the meaning used in the Directory. Of course, the Mass and Sacraments administered by the priests of the Society are valid. "
Pope John Paul II, of happy memory, had taken this same step to satisfy the traditionalist faithful. But His Holiness left it to individual bishops as to if and when the old rites could be used. Most American bishops summarily ignored the pope.
It is not about language, vernacular or Latin, but about the sacred Roman Rite's rites, reverence, adoration of Christ in the Sacrament, communion upon the tongue, no sacrileges and neo-protestant heresies in liturgy. English is nice too. But the main of the Mass must be in Latin (see pope Pius XII, Mediator Dei).
