Understanding bowling ball surfaces and being able to make adjustments when needed is extremely important. The cover stock of the bowling ball is what makes up 70% of a bowling ball's reaction so it's crucial that the correct surface is being used.
Typical amounts of surface for bowling ball cover stocks are: 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and shined. These surfaces are listed from earliest to latest regarding when your bowling ball will hook when applied. Understanding and being able to manipulate bowling ball surfaces will help take your game to the next level.

GO BOWLING!!! - Sport
Great video, young bowlers who are bowling tournaments with sport shots for the first time should definitely watch this, surface pads were my friend this year at college
Awesome video. I have always been afraid of changing the surface of my balls but I DEFINITELY need to for tournaments
This video is very useful! I would do an example of 1000 and 2000 rather than just the 500 next time you do another one of these. Thank yâall for the video đđŒ
Great useful and important info as always!!
I was shown by my pro shop owner, that drilled my equipment that it is not necessary to change surface of a urethane ball, we actually did a little trial and error on the lanes.I have been bowling very well with the Pitch Black, I just make sure to take the dry cleaning pad to it to keep the oil buildup off of it. I use the urethane when my reactive gets hard to control or itâs too aggressive in later games as lanes break down.
Thanks for the video boys, Iâve been wondering how to use Abralon Pads I thought it was was more complicated than this lol!
loving the videos guys. you take something simple as bowling and make it interesting. possible video idea if you see this is the journey from rec league to pba tour. the requirements needed to move from level to level and the ins and outs to know for sport leagues, regionals, and the pba tour lvl. thank you
This video was extremely informative! I just ordered my pads!
Did they stop the bleeding
Also, I wouldn't say necessarily it's only for sport shots or for tournaments per say to use abralon pads. You can use them on house shots and knowing how to use them and maintaining the surface on your bowling balls will increase your averages a ton if you know how to use them.
Good stuff, never thought about doing this.
Can you have a video where you go up the grit line. This will give us an idea on how a ball reacts at different grits.
Don Webster lower the number, âmoreâ hook. Really just reads the lane earlier. Which makes it appear to hook more. But really itâs just hooking for a longer time than if you use a higher number.
Don Webster didnât watch the video before replying and they covered what I said đ
I needed this video! Thanks guys!
Thanks for watching
Again great tutorial video. Please keep it up.
Thanks for watching
Thank you for the tips
Will that ruin the ball in any way? Or will the ball go back to normal after a few games? And how many times can you do that to a ball before it's time to get a new one? Sorry for so many questions
Really u donât need to change the ball and u can hit it with a sand pad every time u go bowling but please clean the ball too cause that can effect the ball too
Trucut by ctd pads are really good too!
Really helpful video shows me how much my ball breaks down
Great video again guys.
Thanks for watching
How hard is it to bring a ball back to box if go as low as a 500 pad? Id hate to ruin a coverstock for one tourney... it would be different if i were sponsored, but, as a house bowler that bowls occasionally in tourneys, find it better to make adjustments with speed control or feet movement. What do you think?
Off topic but Congrats on 30K subscribers! đ
Thanks for watching
You guys need to try Tru-Cut by CTD I think they give the true cut surface of any pad even better than abralon pads
great video and demonstration. I would have liked a little discussion on the affects of over use of the pads on the balls and how it affects the life span of the bowling ball.
for the new bowlers, so they don't think they need to use the pads after EVERY game.
Great video
In my case that I don't have many bowling balls, it helps a lot!! I won a regional championship here in Brazil doing this kkkkkkk
Your advice on Abralon pads is valuable. I have one question. Are abralon pads permanently usable no matter what ball you have?
Great video. Everyone else has brought up ctd pads so I'll ask this. I like solid balls polished over pearls sometimes. How do you feel about that. Or do you put surface on pearls?
You can put surface on pearls. It will just make them read sooner and snap less on the backend. Polishing a solid will make it behave more like a pearl, and sanding a pearl will make it behave more like a solid. (Note I said MORE like, not EXACTLY like.)
Guess it's time to dull up my electrify. Thanks guys, just saved me from buying a stronger ball for now.
Back in the day when I used to bowl before I got hurt I would do this and people thought I was crazy and roll their eyes at me. Even though I had the highest average on the league.
How about a video on launch angles and how to consistently repeat them
Great video, never understood these pads and when/how to use them. Is the 500 going to give you the most surface? If I wanted to progressively add surface until it felt right would I start at the 2000 and work my way down to 500?
No you wanna go 509 and work up
Looking to put my Arsenal together for Nationals 1st of July. The equipment I bowl with is Brunswick DV8 and Radical. What kind of layouts/ equipment would you suggest to get prepared for Nationals?
Thanks for the input. I am attempting to 'navigate' sport/tourney oils with different grits at this time. This video was very helpful.
Thanks for watching
Are the anerlon pads only good for one use or can they be used multiple times
Bro I just watched the intro on repeat to see Brad smile for 10 seconds straight
Tru pads are great!
Hi love your vidsđ
Thanks for watching
Brad and Kyle been watching since 1.5 k
I just bought a phaze 2. I bowl 2 handed around 13-14mph. The ball keeps going flush through the head pin even if I put a lot of angle on it. I was thinking about smoothing out the surface a bit, more shinier I guess, to help with my slow ball speed and maybe I can get around it better and down the lane. does that. make sense? thanks.
I have my loaded up and ready for nationals
Thanks
Thanks Guys!
Thanks for watching
Great video! My family and I just started bowling . We are in a league now and trying to perfect the hook style. I uploaded a short video on my channel
Have you guys tried using true cut pads by CTD? They work amazingly well dry sanding and even better with a spinner. They last a lot longer too.
A lot of people around league have the misconception of more surface = more hook and less surface = less hook. Itâs hard trying to re-educate people who have believed things I like this for a long time.
i have used the tru cut pads by ctd and i have to say they are much better than abralon imo. being two handed i actually prefer lower r.g balls with surface and these pads allow me to feel comfortable being agressive with the ball speed wise. Instead of having to slow down or let off cause the r.g is too high. Higher r.g balls can be too snappy for me at times causing over and under. I would definitely recommend these pads. also that last part i agree with one hundred percent. Its all about reading the lane front to back.
Tru cut ctd sanding pads are the best. The lower grit pad you use just makes the ball hook sooner and less on the backend
Would you recommend lower grit for low rev bowlers? I have struggle getting angle at some tournaments and never tried pads.
Can you use these during league play or only during practice
Those pads are so much easier to use than the 5-gallon bucket of chemicals pros used to use back in the soaker days. LOL! Next time you see Mark Roth ask him about those days ;)
@brad and kyle do you have a link to the 500,1000,2000 grit pads??
what's the best pad to use for a 3000 grit bowling ball?
I have a pearl axiom and it is hard for me to control my hook alot to do With Me having slow speed ant suggestions on what I can do
Question here...
So if I put my ball into the NuBall to get all the oil out, do I NEED to resurface that ball? Because the pores are all open now. I'm guessing you have to resurface it to close it back up so oil doesn't easily go back in.
Also, how do I shine a ball? Like my Phase 2. It's at a 500 grit. But how do shine it up in a sense?
Question: When do you know if you are using too much surface vs not enough?
Is ball burning up or just not reading the lane?
Nick Beattie watching where the rev rate increases and finally stabilizes tells you if the ball hooked too early or too late.
Also watch where axis rotation diminishes as the ball travels down the lane.
Dirk Ridley thx
Dear Brad & Kyle: This is one of the most informative videos I have seen within the bowling universe in some time. A few questions come to mind.
1. What is the best way to sand a ball by hand (I have never done it so I do not want to jack my balls up) and knowing how I evenly covered all the surface?
2. Do you recommend changing the surface on just a urethane ball or do you recommend sanding a hybrid or reactive coverstock?
3. Kyle, in one of your past videos, you mentioned something about knowing how to throw urethane. What did you mean by this?
Thanks guys, your videos are awesome and best of luck in Portland, Kyle (sorry about Portland Brad, but you are just as awesome too!)
Need get u all some tru cut pads
U see I have that problem with my bowling ball like it wont hook and its a reactive ball with a shine how do I fix it? As of right now I have 250 grits on it and it was hooking when I went to practice with it when I first went an got it looking all nice and now it wont hook at all
Hey brad and Kyle just looking for any help with trying to get better. I stand at 15 and throw at second arrow but I donât throw extremely hard and donât have much revs on the ball but anyways I always hit left of the head pin any suggestions? When I throw at 15 aiming for second arrow I feel cramped on the lane.
Stand at 20 and throw at 15. Ride the heavy oil down to a later break point.
Kyle and Brad-do a video with more in depth of using these please. Show a ball with 500/750/1000/1500 and 2k.
take a 500 and tap it gently with 1000 to get about 750 or 800 and same with 1000 use the 2k lightly to get about 1500.
It's magic but people won't believe it until they see it.
how to know which pads fit your bowling ball? sorry im a beginner :p
Bowled 35' cheetah last night and everyone looked at me funny for having an asym sanded to 800 everyone thought my ball would take off and i was playing up the 4-5 board
AKstryker23 thatâs how to play short pattern like that. Polished ball and/or asym will not go well for the average bowler.
Love my pads!!! I keep 500,1000,1500 and 2000.
They come out with 1500 recently?
@@drewagardy its made by different company. I bought some at Nationals 2 years ago.
does wetting the pad help the ball or not
I have a storm fever pitch and I wanna put surface on it. If it's too much do I just polish it to bring it back to factory.
Stvn* Universe Iâm wondering the same thing
Hadn't bowled in six years. Just found a league that fits my work hours. Problem. My balls are dead! Cleaner hasn't halped much. Will sanding help? Thanks!
So since my purple hammer doesnât hook on a HEAVILY OILED lane I should go with the 500grit?
Ctd pads are awsome
How long do the pads last? Also, what if you hit it with surface and then after a game it's back to where it was? You can't hit it with surface again...
I have a 360 pad how would that help my ball
Is the sand paper used only once?
Very nice idols^~^
Thanks for watching
May I recommend a bubble level for your camera? Love your content, but it's hard to watch with the camera angle being tilted.
they did it on purpose so Brad doesn't look way to short
What do you do if you bowl a tournament and they wonât allow you to change the surface and you wonât know the pattern
Does anyone else get creeped out by Brad in the first 8 seconds of the past couple of videos. Love you Brad â€ïžđł
I wouldn't have noticed it, but my gosh that's actually pretty funny
Watch some old Denny Schreiner/Mike Durbin ESPN telecasts. Durbin's "camera smile" could creep out Stephen King.
I put 500 on my Zen U and that ball is a hook monster.
How you put it back to normal?
does anyone have a link to the pads where i can buy them or would they be at my pro shop? Cause i don't remember seeing them there
I would ask you PSO, mine had them in stock and sold them. You can also go to the abralon site and buy them direct.
@@lancesleftnut amzn.to/2S8CzqO
just go to amazon there like 15 dollors
What do I do if my ball is hooking way to much?
you don't wipe the dust off of it after sanding it?
How many times can you use a pad?
I watched the intro to this video a 100 times and I'm certain that Kyle was standing next to a cardboard cut out of Brad in the beginning.
Since i do have no experience with changing ball surface whatsoever and only have a limited amount of bowling balls to change surface on:
how often can you change surface of a single ball before it possibly does not fit the size regulations anymore? I imagine that ~ 1.5 mm of ball surface do not offer that much room for playing around with different surfaces.
I probably have balls way out of size adjustment to be honest. They're old and have been resurfaced many many many times. For your average league bowler I wouldn't be too concerned about it. But like brad and kyle say adjust only when you feel it necessary. I wouldn't play with surface every single time you bowl just for fun lol
It would take a lot of resurfacing before it wouldn't fit regulations. For me, I put surface on my bowling equipment about once a month and I bowl approximately about 30-40 games a week. So it would probably take like I suppose 80-100 times of sanding your equipment before it wouldn't fit regulations anymore. And that's a ton of sanding your equipment. So I wouldn't be too worried about your ball not matching regulations and periodically maintain your equipment. If you maintain your equipment by sanding/resurfacing it then you will be able to use your equipment longer and your averages will def see an improvement.
my experience is the ball hooks more period. maybe because I'm old and i don't have a lot of speed. 13 to 15mph
I am a lefty. I use 360 and 180 on sport shot patterns. 360 during league.
I'm speed dominant and have the same issue. I usually need more surface.
5:19 đ€Ł
What do the numbers on the pads mean? I'm new to bowlingđ
The roughness of the pads. 500 being the roughest compared to a 2000
Vinai Kounnorath the rougher the ball the more hook?
The faster it will catch friction on the lane and hook earlier
Seems to me that you guys have your hand on the ball at let's say 4 o'clock how do you do this and not go Brooklyn I always cross my body what do i need to do?
I would video yourself and make sure your arm is coming back straight. There are times that it feels straight back, but could be swinging the ball away from you therefore it comes back across your body.
Tdub W totally agree with Travis D this is what I did.
Would you put alot of surface on a pitch black for nationals......I had alot of success at nationals with a virtual gravity nano that had a lil surface.
I wouldnt even bring a urethane ball for nationals..if you're doing bowlers journal than yes but nationals is not meant for urethane.. team even you want to break down the pattern with your team so lots of big asyms and surface to break it down then go into something smooth .. doubles and singles is a different story
@@caseycuster87 I thought about phase 2 with some surface and the hustle ink to complement it.
@@brank79 got anything with a 2in pin to pap?? Couple of the booth guys were saying 2" pap were rolling great. I have a mag 035 with a 2in pin that's gonna be hit 500 1000 and that's gonna be my control ball. Taking 8 with me. Phaze 2 is an excellent choice
@@caseycuster87 I am going to get a phase2 punched up so ill ask them about a 2 in to pap.....it would be nice just to have some responsive equipment instead of going out guessing
@@brank79 leave the phaze 2 at a simple layout like 45x4.5x40 to keep it controllable. If you cam get your hands on a symmetric solid then I'd drill that with a 2inch pin.
so when you surface the bowling ball like this is it permanent or will the cover get back to the original surface after a few games?
After about 10 games or so its back to lane shine. About 4500 grit
I doubt you guys will see this but I use a brand different from abralon and I think it would work out better for you guys on tour
Bowling IQ. 14mile rd Sterling Heights Mi
I live real close to this place
I see a lot of people wet the pad. Is that necessary
It's not necessary but It will extend the life of the pad
I saw the core change...you guys are quick, but not quick enough!
I can see you increased your rev rate in your second shot
The point was when it picked up on the lane
New Brad & Kyle video. Click it. Like it. Watch it.
Would it be worth using an abrasive pad on a plastic ball to try and make it hook more?
Now my question is, do I have to reapply the surface each shot?
Most leagues only allow you to change surface until the end of practice! So usually we recommend to have ur surface plan before practice. Then once there is a minute or so left, make the necessary adjustments!
Ive heard people say many times before is that hitting a ball with surface or resurfacing it, then it decreases the life of the ball, is this true or not?
No, this is not true at all. Resurfacing allows you to prolong the use of the ball as it restores the peaks and valleys as the ball is being resurfaced. Most pros on tour do not resurface or maintain their equipment because they have the liberty of drilling as many bowling balls as they can. Most amateurs can't do that so you have to maintain your equipment by resurfacing your equipment. If you don't maintain your equipment then you may not get the same consistent ball reaction.
You still in michigan?
These are old. These were filmed during the wsob. They are in Portland right now.
I want to see you put actual sandpaper that you sand wood and put it on a old bowling ball I want to see what it dose
You guys donât wipe the dust before throwing it?
Same question. K&B liked but no answer? Off to the forums I guess ;-) Better format for detailed questions anyway...unless this gets an answer!
nope. no answer. =P
HATE IT when the uploader takes time to read a question and âlikesâ the comment but DOESNâT CARE or bother answering...
