    That’s a good video, showing the effect of what mass balancing does, but I think you should talk about why it works? The oscillation begins when the control surface moves this causes the hinge point to also move in the opposite direction. Under some conditions the movement will quickly amplify into flutter. Adding mass tends to cancel the oscillation because as the hinge point is moving up or down the mass creates a counter force to cancel the oscillation.

    It also increases the surface's inertia which increases its resistance to acceleration.

      Actually, it cancels the inertia, which is why it works.

    Wonderful Videos! Thank you! One question I just having trouble to understand. Is there a reason the elevator trim tab is on the Right side and the Aileron Trim Tab is on the LH wing (Cessna 421). I guess the manufacturer has the choice and did probably not just roll the dice to decide where to mount it. I would guess an Elevator Trim Tab on the Left would get the Slipstream from the LH engine, and Aileron trim Tab on the Right would get the slipstream of the RH engine?

      Hi - you would need manual and spec for your particular aircraft. A. typical procedure is to mount the control surface (as installed, ie painted and complete with static wicks, balance weights etc) on some kind of fixture so that it can pivot freely about its hinge point The surface is then levelled, as specified by the aircraft manual. Once level, the surface must fall within the manufacturers spec for a "leading edge heavy" or "trailing edge heavy" condition, often expressed as a moment (force X perpendicular distance to the line of action of the force). Particular caution and precision are required, for some configurations, the levelling of the surface is very critical, (Cessna ailerons for example).

    some late information. it's DAMP Not dampen at 3:34, because you have chosen to use a wonky pivot point location, the accuracy of ALL of your explanation Suspect.

      Thanks: Firstly - dampen is the correct verb, ref OED. Secondly, the "use of a wonky pivot location" If you mean "not solid or rigid", this is one of the reasons mass balancing is required. Nothing is truly rigid, so, an oscillation can start and be sustained by taking energy from the airflow.

    Was not be the easiest say it is to avoid flutter first and then show the experiment?
