Moses Malone vs Kareem was a great match-up.
Willis reed; artis Gilmore; oldie/ nursing 🏡 home:: wilt ;; mose Malone jabber retire before David Robinson; next year
@@loydkline - ok
Glad he mentioned Bob Lanier, the Dobber (with the Pistons) always played well vs Kareem. Great matchup!
Bob should have definitely been among the top 75 basketball players of all time
@@rayharris5452 Agreed
His line in AIRPLANE was hilarious.
Jabber forgot Willis reed; mose Malone artis Gilmore;; lier ; lier etc etc
Willis Reed played him tuff.
Really glad he gave respect to a few players who although are acknowledged all time greats, aren't mentioned as much as they should be. However, its of my opinion that Wilt Chamberlain and Moses Malone gave him the most work. Wilt is the only player in history that I've ever seen block his famous sky hook, and he did it 3 times in 1 play, defeated Kareem in the 1972 playoffs even though Wilt was way out of his prime. They were 1-1 against eachother in all time playoff series. Moses averaged 25 and 15 against Kareem in the 34 games they faced off regular season and 28 and 18 agasint him in the playoffs. They also were 1-1 against eachother all time in playoff series.
Kareem gives credit to Big Nate!
😊Wilt blocked it twice in one play, and he did it in two separate games. 6 blocks in one game vs Kareem, total of 10 blocks
Man I could listen to this guy all day.
Grew up watching Nate play for the Warriors. He was a great defender and a great rebounder and any big man he went up against had to work very hard for his points.
He also made a mean barbecue. Was fortunate enough to speak with him a couple of times at Big Nate’s in San Francisco. Very nice man.
I think he missed that championship team in 1875🤔 really enjoyed watching him play
Not just a great defender. Saw him warming up at a game at The Cow Palace in San Francisco. He made eleven shots in a row from the corner which would have been three point shots a few years later.
Love Kareem! In my opinion 1 of 3 with the best argument for goat.
Magic, Jordan, Kareem, Bird=Basketball's Mount Rushmore
Kareem was very relaxed in this interview - I believe thats not always the case - but a great interview - he has so much to add to our knowledge in that era. His game was a thing of beauty. He shoud always be considered top 5. The sky hook revolutionized the game.
Lanier would have been a beast with the three point line. Exceptional range for two pointers.
I love just a discussion of the game. And as a lifelong Laker fan, I appreciate the guys that worked for a living under the basket. Nate Thurmond you could see, worked for a living, strength and strategy - and a gentleman.
Always enjoyed watching Dave cowens taking on kareem.
To not mention Chamberlain is a little disrespectful.
He completely dominated Wilt in the NBA. Made look Wild a weakling.
I love kareem, he is my favorite player... He was amazing in his time and if he was young and played the new guys I think he would work them just as Bird would. Kareem is a kind hearted educated whom I hold in the highest regard. Amazing man...
What about Bill Walton, as in.............
"Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!"
Airplane is still one of my favorite movies.
I am old enough to have seen Nate Thurmond play live. He was at the end of his career playing for the expansion Cleveland Cavaliers, but he was still a beast.
So many HOF centers from the 1960's and 1970's but some people today just don't know or care about them. For them the game only starts with Bird and Magic. And only really comes alive with MJ. That's why they claim that there were only plumbers and such. With only 8 teams in the league, do you really think that guys without talent were in it? That's around 100 players total in the league back then. Today with 30 teams it's like 400 to 500. And there are so many one and dones and also the center position is devalued. Back then the centers went to war against each other. Now it is more like ballet.
My dad was a personal friend of Thurmond. They went to college together and stayed in the same dorm. His nickname in college was "Tricky Slim". He was not heavily recruited out of high school and went to BGSU because a high school teammate, who was heavily recruited, said he would only go to a school that offered his friend Nate a full ride. BGSU said they would and Thurmond grew something like 5 or 6 inches over the summer between his senior year in HS and his freshman year in college. His college coach almost didn't recognize him! I was able to meet Thurmond I went to the game at BGSU where they retired his jersey. I got his autograph and asked if he remembered dad. His eyes perked up and said he did and to tell him Nate said hi. On a side note, BGSU played Miami (OH) that game. The star player was Ron Harper. One of the guys in my dorm knew him and he sat and talked with us during the first half of the women's game (in those days, the women's team played before the men).
I thought Kareem would've mentioned Wilt Chamberlain! Chamberlain gave Kareem fits, and later Moses Malone dominated Careem in in the 1983 Championship and was the finals MVP! Wilt Chamberlain was the most dominate player ever, both offensively and defensively, and Kareem can't deny that!
I remember Artis Gilmore always played Kareem pretty tough
Artis Gilmore giving jabber hell; Willis reed; mose malone;; oldie/ nursing home 🏡 wilt
@victorwiley3739 really; wow? Artis Gilmore gave jabber lots of trouble
Artis Gilmore & jabber are friends: Kareem Abdul jabber skyhook was unstoppable : artis Gilmore I guess neverv played against Shaquille O'Neal artis Gilmore would've been ; next nightmare for artis Gilmore;; Shaquille O'Neal had two weapons unstoppable power; super great finesse great low post 📫 moves towards the basket 🧺; artis Gilmore played against 7 foot 1 inches lefty david Robinson ; jabber was lucky David Robinson spend two year in the navy otherwise David Robinson would've score 50s points against jabber::
I saw Jabbar elbow the untalented Tom Burleson of Supersonics. Burleson dunked on Jabbar all 2nd half, only great game Burlison ever had in NBA.
@davidmoser3535 really; Tom Burleson 7 foot 3 inches like a pre rick smit 7 foot 4 two decade later ; rick smit gave Patrick Ewing alots of trouble; then Hakeem olajuwon ate up rick smit ;;
I ran into Kareem at Universal Studios in 1990 and he eyeballed me like I was going to try to dunk on him.
There are too many gifted players to choose an all time this or that. Jokic is a great player among hundreds of great players now and past. I enjoy watching a great play, no matter who does it! Some of these plays would be basketball ballet if attached to a classic tune. But, spare me the trash talking, intimidation, and excessive play celebration. I do not give a flip about flopping. If I had to start a team, my first two choices would be:. Bill Russell and Oscar Robertson.
Kareem, an outstanding player and person...and he makes that chair look like a child's chair.
Please he doesn't have Wilt as the toughest defender..never heard him admit.Wilt could and did block his hook..!
Most people know Nate Thurmond was a better defensive player than Wilt. He literally shut Chamberlain out one night. 0pts. Facts.
Hard to get honest answers. He didn't like Wilt. Wilt made a very self loathing comment that he preferred white women because they were more sophisticated than black women. Kareem deservedly lost total respect for Wilt, but fact is Wilt was a tremendous basketball player.
“Kareem Abdul-Jabbar averaged 31.8 points, 15.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 17 games versus Wilt Chamberlain in his career….
“Wilt Chamberlain averaged 17.6 rebounds, 16.3 points and 3.8 assists in 17 games versus Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in his career.
according to Google.)
Tough comparison, as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a rookie, and Wilt was at the tail end of his career … neither were in their prime during their competition
@@smokeyjoe795 Wilt out rebounded and out blocked Nate in almost every meeting, Wilt's record vs Nate was 30/17.
@@markj228 Wilt was 10 years older with a bad knee and he still has a winning record against Kareem... 14 to 13 games. Prime Wilt would have destroyed a prime Kareem, we all know it and Kareem knows it.

Reed and Abdul Jabbar
Nov. 3, 1970 : Knicks 112-108 : Reed 35 points | Jabbar 17 points
Nov. 27, 1971 : Knicks 103-94 : Reed 34 points | Jabbar 33 points
Jan. 26, 1971 : Knicks 107-98 : Reed 35 points | Jabbar 29 points
Marv Albert : "It seems to me, trying to remember all these years later, that Willis used to kill Kareem. Reed would outplay him. I used to think Kareem was afraid of him. He watched him in New York, growing up. There was always that possibility that Reed would deck him."
Pete Vecsey : "Willis Reed was one of the fiercest competitors you'll ever find. He wiped the deck with opponents. He once beat up four Lakers, he broke John Block's jaw... another time, he was in the middle of a huge brawl in Atlanta. He was a great team player and one of the all-time enforcers. His teammates loved him."
Marv Albert : "I remember what Vecsey was talking about. It was opening night at Madison Square Garden against the Lakers. John Block just happened to be in the way. Willis just lost it. He was being restrained, and I think he once got beat up as a child when restrained. So, a fight broke out, and Reed broke free from whomever was holding him back, and he just went up and down the Lakers bench. He got Rudy Larusso as well."
reed reed red reed the ultimate inspirational player even before theplayoffs and championship that soft 15 footer, his drives, reboinding, blahblahblah just the bestest for me and yes the way he dominated alcindor
Kareem has said elsewhere that small, mobile centers, who could shoot and draw him away from the basket, gave him trouble. Reed fits the bill, Cowens and Dan Issel too.
@@bobbell1922 Clyde has said that Kareem hated playing Reed because Willis would muscle him and lean on him playing physical.
Marv Albert always said Willis intimidated him. I wouldn't go that far!
@victorwiley3739 6 wins and 15 losses! Your nonsense is like Wilt grabbed 55 rebounds against Russell and then we look and in 1965, 66, 68, and 69 who won in the playoffs Russell or Chamberlain. Wilt had better stats and Bill had the wins!
Wilt was playing with greats like Hal Greer, Chet Walker and later Billy C and then West and Baylor and yet he lost!
You take the numbers, I'll take the only number that counts WINS!
A loser looks at meaningless numbers, an intelligent winner looks at who got the job done and won!
Then twice in the finals who won Willis or Wilt?
The only thing that stopped Willis Reed was inferior medicine!
Kareem won one title when Reed was injured in 1971 without Magic Johnson!
That is a fact!
In the 1972 playoffs against Wilt we saw Jabbar shoot .457% taking 33 shots a game losing in 6 games to Wilt!
The next year in games 3 to 5 of the finals with a horrible left knee somehow Willis Reed played 96 minutes and scored 61 points, 33 rebounds, and 10 assists shooting 54% against Wilt!
Remember in the first 4 games of the 1970 finals before Reed was injured early in game 5 Reed had 127 points, 60 rebounds, and 10 assists shooting 50% against Wilt!
An under 6'9" Reed able to produce against Wilt and then in the 1972 playoffs Jabbar shoots under 46% against Wilt!
15 wins and 6 losses against Kareem Jabbar!
Two finals MVP Awards and NBA Titles against Wilt!
That is Willis Reed!
@victorwiley3739 Bill Russell did the ABC games in the 1973 finals and constantly praised the leadership and despite his horrible left knee praised how Willis Reed was able to step up against Wilt and get the job done!
He was never healthy in 1973 and yet in the finals in games 3 to 5 in only 96 minutes scored 61 points, grabbed 33 rebounds, and had 10 assists shooting 54% to win a second Finals MVP and NBA title!
If only Pat Ewing had the guts and leadership of Willis Reed and not his GAG act shooting .363% in the 1994 finals!
It's why Clyde Frazier laughs and say's the greatest NY Knick ever is Captain Willis Reed period!
he already said who are the toughest in the movie "Airplane!" - "tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 60 minutes!"
Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!
Roger Murdock is my favorite center
Jabbar is a fine writer, and his literacy shows up in his speech.
Always a class act. I love him.
As for wilt blocking kareem in 1972 when elgin retired and the lakers won a championship.....
Game 3 - Lakers win
Wilt Chamberlain: (6 blocks against Jabbar)
Game 5 - Lakers win
Wilt Chamberlain: (4 blocks against Jabbar)
Game 6 - Lakers win
Wilt Chamberlain:(3 blocks and 2 steals against Jabbar)
Seems to show that a player who can block you 13 times over three games is arguably the most likely to be your most serious opposition?
How about the fact the fact that Kareem dropped 40 against Wilt in that series and had 37pts, 25rebs and 8assists in the last game with Robertson injured. Kareem had to carry the Bucks whereas with West, Goodrich and Mcmillian doing all of the scoring all Wilt had to do was play defense and rebound. He only averaged 10points a game in that series

Kareem never gives Wilt credit. He knows full well that Wilt was better than him. Wilt was far more athletic, MUCH stronger and a better defender and rebounder. He also knows that if Wilt had played as many years as he did, he would never have come close to breaking the all time scoring record.

i noticed he didn't mention Wilt either regardless of that, when they played against each other, Wilt's team won more times both great players, but individually, Chamberlin was simply the best and the most athletic basketball player in the world now, as a team player, ......
Jerry West who played with Wilt and saw Kareem his whole career picks Kareem as the better player. In my opinion I’m taking Kareem as well because he can shoot free throws. Think about this. Wilt lost to Russell in the playoffs by a combined 9 points. If Wilt hits his free throws he wins all of those close games.

I’ve never seen Thurmond play, but he was chiseled. He was 1st team all defense in 69, 71. Wilt was 1st team in 72,73. Kareem never going to give Wilt credit for anything, but one point is that Wilt hated to get fouls. He cared so much about his never fouling out in a game record. Watch the 30 for 30 “The Luckiest Guy in the World”. Details Bill Walton’s life and career. Very insightful. When Walton was healthy, he was the best and destroyed Kareem and Lakers 4-0 in 1977 playoff series. Sadly, his feet and back could not handle the stress of the game.
First, Kareem OBLITERATED Walton in the 1987 Finals. Second, what has this to o with anything?

If Shaq had played in the 60’s against Wilt’s competition he’d average 80 points per game or more..60 per game in the 70’s..there has never been a more intimidating force than Shaq and he played against modern day athletes
That is the delusion of youth. You think the guys from then were not as high quality as now and you are wrong. Better dribbling, better defense, played great offense. I think Shaquille O'Neill is great, but the idea that these guys couldn't play against him is ridiculous. Wilt Chamberlain was every bit as strong and athletic at Shaquille. He could bench 500 lbs, he ran and moved like the best today. Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Bill Russel, Bob Cousy, Connie Hawkins, so many greats that could do anything the guys today do. The only thing players do better than before is three pointers and that is because it was not a first line offense move that it is today. Before 1979, there was no reason to shoot from 22 feet. So no one did. After 1979, it was a end of game, or broken play option. Only recently has it become a first option line of offense.
Wholeheartedly agree with the preceding comments. I’ve watched NBA bb for nearly six decades and following the Lakers in particular, I would rank Shaq third in the succession of great Laker centers alone, behind Wilt & Kareem. Both were very skilled & athletic. Shaq is talented no doubt, but relied on his massiveness to dominate. He outweighed most centers by 100#. There’s no way he would score the points the young guy alluded to if he played in Wilt’s era, as there were other great big men like Bull Russell, Nate Thurmond and Willis Reed to name a few. But, having said all this, if Shaq and Kobe could have co-existed longer, they would have likely racked up a couple or few more rings.
Kareem had to play 9 more years to pass Wilt scoring record. 21 years to 12 years. Wilt played 13 years but missed 1 year due to knee injury.
Wilt played against part-time farm hands and the league was barely integrated. Get real…

Jabbar was 6 wins and 15 losses against Willis Reed even though the Bucks won 304 to 266 in the 5 years they were in the NBA together.
How many know that Willis Reed was 15 and 6 against Alcindor/Jabbar?
The last two times they played one another was in November of 1973 and Reed with a very bad set of knees held Jabbar to 18 for 40 shooting or 45% and held Jabbar to 44 points in 86 minutes.
Over 21 games, Jabbar shot 50% against Reed who was a 56% shooter for his career! Pat Ewing played an old bald Jabbar and yet Jabbar shot over 58% against Ewing!
Reed played the 30 and 16 Alcindor/Jabbar and held him to 50% shooting and Ewing played the 6 rebound old man and yet Jabbar shot almost 60% against Ewing!
Willis Reed was a great player no doubt. Are you saying he was better than Kareem? His stats aren’t better, he has less championships and MVPs. It’s ok to be a knicks fan but don’t take it too far!
@@franktjmackey9416 The only stat I care about is wins and losses like Bill Russell who is the clear GOAT and all I know is I saw Reed win 15 and lose 6 against Jabbar and with his left knee destroyed in 1973 the right knee went that caused Reed to miss 47 games before the playoffs. Right before he was lost for all that time, in November of 1973 he held the stud Jabbar to 18 for 40 shooting in 86 minutes as the teams split. Jabbar was only able to shoot 45% against the 6'9" badly wounded Reed!
In the 1974 playoffs his knees were so bad he averaged like 3.4 points and 2 rebounds in 11 playoff games.
In the 1971 playoffs in game 1 of the Atlanta series Reed badly injured his shoulder tearing muscles and played with one arm for the rest of the 1971 playoffs. It's why he only shot 41% in the 1971 playoffs and the Knicks lost for the only time in 6 playoff series in a row to the Bullets in 7 games with the last game a 93 to 91 loss! After the series Wes Unseld admitted we knew that Willis badly injured and couldn't shoot and was used for his defense, rebounding, and to set screens.
The Bullets went to the finals and lost to the Bucks for Jabbar's only NBA title without Magic Johnson! A healthy Willis Reed and the Knicks go back to defend their NBA title and beat the Bucks! If there was real medicine during the Reed era and he was able to play healthy to 35 like Russell or almost 37 like Wilt would of won 5 to 6 NBA titles!
Bad medicine stopped Willis Reed! He played in 99 regular season games his last 3 seasons and yet somehow in the last 3 games of the 1973 finals against Wilt was able to play 96 minutes and scored 61 points with 33 rebounds and 10 assists shooting 54%. He was wearing the massive Lenox Hill Knee Brace on his left knee and yet was able to will his body to play 96 minutes in 3 games and be great!
It was his second Finals MVP and NBA title!
Remember in the 1970 playoffs over 9 games in a row before his early game 5 injury in the finals Reed scored 266 points had 122 rebounds and 30 assists shooting 53% against Alcindor and Chamberlain at 6'9"!
In the first 4 games of the finals against Wilt, Reed had 127 points and 60 rebounds shooting 51%. How is 31.8 and 15 against Wilt in a team basketball share the wealth offense? Walt Frazier always said Willis could of easily been a 30+ average scorer but that wasn't how we played. He sacrificed for the good of his teammates!
A healthy Willis Reed in the 1971 playoffs and Jabbar would of had no NBA tiltes until Magic Johnson!
Although we disagree on who is better between Reed and Jabbar , I appreciate your passion for him, the knicks, and the nba! I’ve been a fan for over 40 years and always will be 🏀!
@@franktjmackey9416 When you were in your prime and won 6 and lost 15 to a guy 6'9" who was injured all the time after 1971 that is pretty pathetic. Jabbar had the stats, Reed had the wins and in a big spot Jabbar didn't get it done.
An example was when the Knicks came back from 18 down to win 87 to 86 on November 18, 1972, the Knicks mounted the largest comeback in NBA History. The Knicks closed out the game on a 19-0 run to defeat Milwaukee 87-86, after a fourth quarter when New York outscored the Bucks 29-16.
If you watch the last 4 minutes, Marv Albert at one point says Jabbar and Reed in a battle inside as we see Willis muscling Jabbar.
Jabbar went 0 for 6 with an airball sky hook with Reed leaning on him and an airball jumper with Reed leaning on him and Reed never took a shot but had 4 rebounds and an assist. This was the Reed wearing the massive knee brace just back after missing 71 games in 1971/72.
Jabbar dominated the game by the numbers but in the clutch when it mattered Jabbar came up small and Reed held him to 0 for 6 in the last 4 minutes. Without knowing the entire game one would conclude boy Jabbar amazing and Reed big deal but then you say when the Knicks scored the last 19 points what did Jabbar do?
The 0 for 6 was from 86 to 77. The clip doesn't show from the 86 to 68 point when the Knicks mounted the comeback. Jabbar was probably worse than 0 for 6 but they didn't show the entire comeback.
@@franktjmackey9416 I just don't like that Jabbar didn't say I won 6 and lost 15 against Willis Reed and in the first two years when he was healthy before the 1971 playoffs I won 4 and lost 12.
We won 122 games to the Knicks 112 from 1969 to 1971 and yet I was 4 and 12 against the Knicks and was so lucky that Reed was injured for the entire 1971 playoffs or we would of played the Knicks in the finals and lost. I would of never won an NBA title without Magic!
Kareem was the best center of all time!
Does he have 11 championship rings?
Dude was the weakest rebounder to ever get a mention as GOAT.
@@isitrachelorj3953 Spot on! For a center and he was over 7 feet tall was one lame ass of a rebounder
How is the best center of all time 6 wins and 15 losses against Willis Reed who used to intimidate him according to Marv Albert and Clyde Frazier said Kareem hated playing Willis who used to muscle him at 6'9"?
In November of 1973 Reed and Jabbar played twice within a week and Reed held Jabbar to 18 for 40 shooting or 45% and 44 points in 86 minutes. A few days after the second game Reed missed 47 games with his right knee and in 1973/74 was able to only play in 19 games and yet he held Jabbar to 18 for 40 shooting and 44 points in 86 minutes!
How is Jabbar the best of all time. Willis Reed with horrible knees at 6'9" played Jabbar great in November of 1973 as he was almost finished at age 31.
@Victor Wiley he was lame because for his size he didn't bang the boards, those rebounds landed in his hands, got a good bounce, plus he was the biggest bitch on the court, always crying to the refs and he was an oddball, distanced himself from teammates, Google it you Biden 💩 for 🧠's supporter, LoL 🤣
Kareem looks like he's sitting in a kindergartener's chair.
I'd prefer he keep his politics to himself.
Larry Bird the greatest whiteman basketball player then and now.
The best player ATHLETICALLY was Jordan, and Wilt..the greatest basketball player was Larry Bird followed by Jerry West and Magic.. Kareem is in my top 10.. lebron isn't in my top 15..Steph is the best deep shooter, a fine passer and that's it
If starting a team: Bird, Jordan, Magic, West, tie between Wilt/Kareem
Shaq nor Kobe would be in the top 15..shaq had one skill: a fat rear end, that's it
Kobe was better than lebron but a sorry teammate..I would take Havlicek, Hakeem, Duncan before alot of these bums like lechump
I'll take Labron over Bird every day and twice on Sunday (today), and I like Larry Bird. Labron drug some mediocre teams to the finals. Bird had a stellar team along side of him. McHale is a legit hall of fame player. Dennis Johnson was a fine player. The Chief was a very solid center, even got a season of Walton backing him up. I might even take Karl Malone before Bird. Tim Duncan is another great player. The mailman was a beast of a player. When the Joker gets done with his run, he will be in the mix somewhere.
I have seen kareen cry when playing wilt Chamberlain!
He is still such a spoiled little girl he can't admit WILT OWNED HIM EVERY TIME BUT ONE !
Kareem was literally afraid of wilt because wilt hated him because of his mouth and beat on him every time they played 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂!
Lots of juvenile emotion in your post. Anything over 3 emojis is suspect.
@@gaffle-411 well i was 11 at the time I saw it , lew was afraid to challenge wilt And did nothing but cry !
And i can call him wilt because he told me to !
LOOK UP ALL WILTS RECORDS THEY ARE IN WILTS BOOK ( I MEAN THE NBA RECORD BOOK) !
Then look up wilt plays magic Johnson nba alstar team on utube!
And don't forget wilt played with the Harlem globe trotters because they wouldn't let him leave college early to feed his family, it was pure racism and wilt paid for it with the writers hating him !
Wilt Chamberlain 1?
Kareem is a thinker . Fine humble man . But I still like Lee Alcindor better but that doesn’t mean anything.
