  • In November 2018, Hakeem al-Araibi was arrested after his flight from Australia landed in Bangkok, after the government of Bahrain requested that Interpol put out a 'red notice' for his arrest.
Al-Araibi previously played international football for Bahrain, before fleeing persecution to become a refugee in Australia, where he now plays semi-professional soccer in Melbourne.
In this documentary, HITC Sevens examines Bahrain's political unrest and the wider Arab Spring of 2011 through the lens of football and Hakeem al-Araibi's struggles.

I used to live in Bahrain (now in England Middlesbrough and I silently protest their government when I can) and grew up during the protests, and this is one of the most honest videos I have seen of it. And it broke my heart as just a 7year old to see it, I remember it vividly playing football, and because of the police violence they threw tear gas near us near at few peaceful protesters, and that was so normal for me that me and my mates went inside and said “we are getting tear gassed again” what shouldn’t be a normal thing, and that was the final straw on the camels back for my family and we moved out soon after it was to dangerous not because the protesters where after us decent amount of them liked us because we supported them but that we feared the government would escalate stuff to the point of it being unsafe for my family but I really hope Bahrain improves soon but I doubt it will any time soon. Thanks for this video 🇧🇭

So if the Thai gov don't extradite Hakeem, it would be an irony since they punish their own citizen for doing the exact same thing.

    Here’s a tricky one:
Given the current ridiculousness of games in the premier league being postponed for barely any reason.
7 games that would have been postponed under current Prem rules that went ahead

Shout out to Craig Foster, who still continues his work for recognition of refugees and asylum seekers in Australia

Well done Hakeem. I hope he successfully sues our gutless and completely useless government. Unlikely but we'll see, I'm no legal expert. I'm glad hakeem is back although I have to wonder if a holiday to Thailand or anywhere was a particularly smart move. Big respect to Foster. Without I doubt Hakeem would be living in Aus right now as a refugee. What a shame that it's the goodwill of the people that have to fight tooth and nail for such a small piece of justice to be served. When even the government tried to throw him to the wolves

Became big news for a bit here in Thailand regarding Araibi. Damn embarassinf what our government did by detaining him, but since our government is a junta tyrant that came from a coup as well, it's not that surprising. Glad he got released back to Australia.

I'm starting to think Alfie watched way to much of the investigator Tin Tin when growing up haha, digging deep into the murky world of politics, and oppression to bring us this absolute gem.

Alfie this is an admirable attempt at an intense and pyrrhic story of another praiseworthy political struggle but certain details are clumsy and don't make immediate sense...(as at 5:18 re population). It sets an awkward tone to the rest of the piece...
But I really commend the content like this on this channel...keep it up...

Very sad story, but good ending. He got his freedom after spending so much time in Thai prisons, they have some of the worst conditions. The young man went through so much and kudos to former Socceroos captain who campaigned for him.

as a libyan this arab spring has destroyed lives and football for us

From my perspective it was the interference and destabilization by the US and its allies (because of oil) in Libya not the Arab Spring per se that broke Libya apart...
