  • Hello Skaters! Welcome back! Today I am teaching you how to do a really lovely 1/2 rotation jump called a Stag Jump and I have a student of mine Ava here to help demonstrate! This is a beautiful variation of a split jump and can be done from two different entrances. I hope you enjoy it!

Hello Eva 👋 That stag jump is really amazing! And congrats on the axel!
Unfortunately, my road to landing an axel has hit a roadblock…When I arrived at the rink the other day, the safety person said that people are no longer allowed into the central part of the ice unless during class. Meaning we can only skate around the tracks…He explains that is because there was a pretty bad collision between someone taking class and someone practicing out of class. Honestly, WTF. That means figure skaters can’t practice any more…🤬 To make matters worse, I said screw this and did off ice jump practices before class and slightly twisted my right knee…so I wasn’t even able to attempt the axel in class.
The bright side was that I tried some fine tuning that I came up with at home regarding the arms for Salchow and toe tap for toe loops and flips (which BTW were pretty much in line with what you said in this stag jump video) and got some pretty good results. Coach even said for the flip jump that I might be jumping higher than “those kids,” as she points across the rink to the competitive kids doing doubles and triples like clockwork. So yeah, the height is there even with a bad knee…let’s see what happens when the knee gets better.
Oh, that’s right…I’m not allowed to practice…ARRRGH!!! The idea of not being able to practice is really stressing. To the point that I’ve been eating and drinking a lot the past few days…Hopefully I can get myself back together and push towards the axel…

Hello, Julia, talking about how long a skater skates, it is more appropriate to use approximate total skating hours, not years, because one might skate an hour a day and the other - ten hours.

That is true! I just don't know many people who could tell you exactly how many hours they had skated. Especially after a few years.

Where I am at, we go by for how many years we have skated, then maybe about how many hours a week.
