Omg Arlo is becoming the most handsomest little man . So glad you mentioned some foods do cause future heart issues, especially for Dobermans. So many people don’t realize any Grain Free commercial foods (Blue buffalo, Rachel Ray, etc ) have been proven to cause complications for dogs and cats down the line . Pro Plan is an excellent choice .

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  Před 4 lety +18

Thank you so much Baddie. Yeah I certainly wouldn't be feeding this food if I didn't believe in it after doing my research.
If you ask 10 owners of AKC show Dobermans what food they feed, I'd be willing to bet at least 5 of them will say Purina Pro Plan. It's passes WSAVA guidelines (which not many foods do), there's never been a mandatory recall on the food that I know of, it wasn't linked to even ONE case of DCM in Dobermans in the recent FDA investigation into dog foods, and they have more research dollars invested into refining their formula than pretty much any other brand. In face in the FDA investigation reports, the vets dealing with DCM in their patients moved a lot of dogs over to Purina Pro Plan and began seeing improvements. Also they have certain things which are VERY important for Dobies like the addition of the Omega fatty acids, etc.
I definitely believe they are a solid choice for Dobermans specifically, but I'm always reading and new studies come out all the time. So I'm more than willing to change my recommendation if I see new information that leads me in a different direction.

Baddie Vee is there a list of grain free brands I should avoid? I’ve been feeding my 4 month old Doberman Nutro puppy blend and she loves it but could it cause health issues?

@@katelynncochrane8968 I have a list on my website of the foods that were linked to DCM in the FDA's investigation that might be helpful! DCM is the heart issue she's referring to. It's becoming a bit of an issue in Dobermans. Here's the link: www.dobermanplanet.com/doberman-dilated-cardiomyopathy/

      @Sakorathecreature Před 4 lety +6

Baddie Vee you’re totally right that those brands can cause issues but it’s actually not because of being grain free! Grain free is the best way to go because it’s the most biologically appropriate diet for dogs. Unfortunately it’s because blue buffalo, Rachel ray, and so many other brands (actually purina as well) use very low quality ingredients and don’t balance them to fit the dogs needs! DCM is a genetic issue and grain free diets have not been proven to cause anything :)

I feel much better after seeing the out takes at the end! I have a 16 week Doberboy, to go along with my 2 yo Dobergirl. I watch Arlo and think what an angel. My True more closely resembles the Arlo in the out takes, although at feedings he is doing his best Arlo impression. I teach them to ‘go to your spot’, any type of throw rugs I have placed down, and they wait there. Love your videos, thank you so much!

Though I would advise against pedigree and Alpo. I found it leaves my dogs coats (even past dogs of different breeds) greasy and their poo very runny. I’ve had good luck with royal canin, until I moved to a different climate (from Hawaii to upstate ny) then went to Rachel ray after trying a couple different brands. So if their environment changes could cause their food needs to change as well.

Purina is a brand that has been in a lot of pet food recalls over the years. They also almost always contain a lot of corn and wheat and by products in their ingredients which is not great and all the corn actually ends up making the food higher in carbohydrates instead of protein even when a meat might be listed first. Corn is a cheap filler that’s why it’s used a lot in the cheaper dog foods.

    • @Adriftingleaf
      @Adriftingleaf Před 4 lety +1

Thousands of Doberman Owners can attest to Purina Pro Plan, so I wouldn't say Purina is bad at all. Grain Free foods have been listed as potential problem foods for DCM Prone Pets. The foods of concern are those containing legumes such as peas or lentils, other legume seeds, or potatoes listed as primary ingredients. I say they'd rather not take a risk and why change something that has a proven track record for Owners. They might not advertise/promote that much but it's affordable too. Ultimately in the end I think it's what your dog likes, and if he is doing healthy and fine on the food you provide for him IMO. If you got the money go buy Acana but your gonna take a hit on your wallet, finding the right balance is the key. 25-30 lb bag would probaby last you around a Month or so at around 4 cups a day.

Hello John, first of all, I can't tell how gratefull I am for all these videos you are doing with Arlo.
It helped me showing my wife how intelligent, family friendly and interesting the Dobermann breed is.
Now our puppy (female european) will reach us in march and we are getting ready watching every single video in order to be - as much as possible - offering the most relaxing "landing to home 1st week" to this new family member.
We live in France, and our puppy is coming from a highly reputated breeder in Spain - (the only way for us to get an ears cropped dog as its not allowed in France).
As you know now, we are french so I had to translate your videos for my wife to undersand. Believe me your dynamism, your very enthusiastic attitude was language crossing barrier breaker.
So just in case it helps, here is below the translation for this video with the corresponding timeline. So maybe you can make it a subtitle file.

What to Feed a Doberman Puppy-and How to Do It RIGHT

I came back and rewatched this video to figure out an important dilemma for me in terms of feeding doberman (puppy and adult). I still cannot understand after sooo much research.
Doberman Planet, I need your help.
So on one hand we say that dobermans should not be fed full stomach before and after exercising and any physical activity.
And on the other hand we say that it is always worth feeding your puppy through mental training and training in general so that we utilize the value of food to teach them to behave etc.
The question is... Is it not dangerous for the puppy to be fed while training and how do we know the stomach is not full if we give their daily food dosage little by little during/through training sessions.
    Thanks for support,
    Shushan

What about a raised feeding bowl

    • @D13fs
      @D13fs Před 4 lety +2

I was wondering that. I've researched and read a lot that raising the bowl is more detrimental and associated with more bloat, or GDV. But I see many people with large and giant dogs recommend it. It's a confusing and hot topic. Currently, I would not do it.

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  Před 4 lety +6

Yeah I just about killed myself with research on that topic awhile back. I couldn't find anything really concrete on that as far as research studies go.
This was my final takeaway: Wild dogs (and the Doberman's ancestors) always ate off ground level while standing up, without issues. The raised bowls are certainly a newer thing in the scheme of things. So is bloat (although that doesn't mean they're necessarily linked). I do think it can be more comfortable for the dog to eat off a raised platform... but it's not natural for the dog. I've always fed my dogs from ground level and never had an issue with bloat. I didn't find any concrete evidence one way or the other but looking back at how Dobermans (and wild dog ancestors of the domestic dog in general) would eat, I felt most comfortable avoiding raised dog bowls personally.

On your website, you specifically list peas and legumes as carbs a dobermann owner should look for in their food. However, the FDA has found that peas and legumes may be linked to DCM, and that owners should be looking to feed their dogs a food that is NOT grain free (has grains) and to avoid foods with high amounts of peas, legumes, potatoes, lentils, and beans. I understand this video was uploaded in April, but the report from the FDA is from more than a year ago. It might be worth updating your website to address this

Hey John, on your website you recommend Puppy Breed Purina for Pups, but many Owners recommend you use ALS or Adult Breed Bags when they are puppies due to the extra Vitamins and Growth Issues for Large Breeds. How do you feel about this. Also don't you think its nuts how although Purina Pro Plan is recommended by most owners that all the Ads, Articles, from Media Outlets do not even have Purina on this list. In fact Dog Food Advisor has the food ranked as Mid Tier.

And this is just me personally but we are going to train European lines mostly because you don't see American lines in protection work that often since you yourself said European Dobermans are more likely to put themselves in between you and the threat. I have a German Pointer and I'm with you on the manufacturer's recommendation being far off, I feed my dog twice the amount, and he is still not fat in fact you can feel his rib bones if you press his sides. TL;DR: Try out different amounts with your puppy until you get it right, depends on exercise level, etc.

    • @DobermanPlanet

Hey John, love the channel man! Before we got our puppy dobe, Bia, I did a bunch of research and your channel was a big part of it. Thank you!
I was wondering if you've heard anything in regards to purina changing their food formulas in the last few months? The last bag of pro plan I bought had a slightly different size and shape to it, our pup seems to have more gastric "events" since the new bag also. I've heard a couple other people say purina did change it without notifying consumers and was curious if you had any insight?
