    Living With is a series where "pet owners" share their experience caring for a breed of dog. In this episode, Marilyn Braverman shares her life and times living with Stevie her Doberman Pinscher. In addtion to Stevie she has a French Bulldog named Oliver. Her two dogs live an amazing life together. Like any good big brother Stevie looks after Oliver and the two of them get along greatly.
    Doberman Pinschers are well known as intelligent, alert, and tenaciously loyal companions and guard dogs. Personality varies a great deal between each individual, but if taken care of and trained properly they tend to be loving and devoted companions. The Doberman is driven, strong, and sometimes stubborn. Owning one requires commitment and care, but if trained well, they can be wonderful family dogs. With a consistent approach they can be easy to train and will learn very quickly. As with all dogs, if properly trained, they can be excellent with children.

    When I was about 17 years old I went overnight hiking/camping with a few high school buddies of mine into the local mountain trails. I brought along my 3 year old female Dobe. That night when we settled in for the night into our sleeping bags my Dobe circled and fussed over each of us until we were settled securely into our sleeping bags. She did not come crawl into my sleeping bag until the rest of the guys had been "tucked in" by her. The next morning when hiking down and out of the mountain side one of the group decided he wanted to take an obscure kinda "off trail" path down to the base of the mountain he assured us that we would all end up at the same meeting point in about an hour time. My Dobe all of a sudden got kinda stressed as she saw me and the other two guys go one way and the single guy go off on his own. I had no idea what was going through her mind at the moment it was happening; she seemed torn as to which way she should go looking back and forth; she stuck with my single friend and followed him all the way down to the meeting point. She followed him because she knew that I was with two others and she followed the single guy because he need a partner for safety. Absolute true story !! I have had a special place for Dobermans in my heart and in my home ever since. They are the most intelligent breed!!

This is a phenomenal example of discipline, boundaries, exercise, love, research, training, being a responsible dog owners, and mostly communication. You don't end up with a gorgeous and beautifully well mannered dog like this by accident lol She's proof that being the leader of the pack and treating a dog like a dog and not spoiling it completely rotten to a fault will produce one hell of a dog and an even better loyal best friend 👏👏👏👏

      @byReZio Před 6 lety +204

      Such bullshit excuse. Cropped ears are for looks and only from the human point of view. People don't give a shit about their dogs and they crop their ears. It takes time to heal and then months of taping to make them stand upright. It's unnecessary. If it was really for ear infection we would do the same to cavalier king charles, beagle and all the other breads that have floppy ears. But no we only do that to dobermans, boxers and pitbulls because it makes them scarier to humans.
      There was maybe a good reason to do it before for improved communication or as guard dogs. But today most people only crop their dog's ears because they're used to it and follow everyone else.
      Also tails are very important for dogs, as communication with other dogs and balance, if it's their it's for a good reason.

    • @rodentraiser3995
      @rodentraiser3995 Před 6 lety +88

      What, ReZio, you think a dog with a short tail can't wag it? And as for caring about him, my dog's ears were cropped and his tail was docked and I loved the daylights out of him. He also had excellent balance, even with a docked tail. I ought to know - I worked with him in agility training and SAR. What cropped and docked dog have you ever worked with?
      I've been around hundreds of Dobie puppies whose ears have been cropped and they were happy, healthy, well adjusted puppies whose only concern was getting their own way all the time, like most puppies. They don't mind the taping a bit IF you do it correctly. Thanks to people like you with all your emotional garbage about ear cropping, fewer and fewer people know how to correctly tape a cropped ear these days. THAT'S what's causing ear infections and pain for the puppies. Thanks for nothing.
      So if you don't want to crop your dog's ears, fine. But you don't have any right to tell me or anyone else what to do. Why don't you start a campaign about people not spaying their and neutering their dogs instead, which is far more painful for the dogs?

The one I have now,,Rocky,,was 4 months old when I got him and his ears were cropped but still in the process if being posted. It was SO MUCH WORK !! I love the look of cropped ears on dobies but would never subject my dogs to it willingly.
    It's upsetting that people judge me and my dog when they see his ears. I rescued him from a life of misery,and had nothing to do with what happened to his ears. But people can be so judgemental on this subject.

    When introducing new people in the house for the first time always put your dog outside first. Bring the person inside and then let the dog back inside. This way they will know that person belongs there and is part of the pack. Never put your dog above another human especially Dobermans or you will have problems.

    i had a Doberman, huge big softie, a lovely dog, excellent guard dog but very trustworthy, good with children and other dogs. He was 5 years and 3 months old when he collapsed and died in my kitchen, it turned out he had DCM, a heart condition very common in doberman, 60% of dobes have this condition my vet informed me, it was the most devastating thing ever. I would love to live with another Dobe, but I never will as I would always be worried that the same thing may happen again. They are the most amazing dog and I will miss my boy always. Breeders need to be more selective with breeding their dogs and breed for health and not just to make money. When my dog died I researched this and could not believe the amount of people who's dogs had suddenly died with no apparent signs of illness, it is truly devastating. I live in England but apparently this problem is with all dobes across the world.

We're from San Francisco but live in S.Amerca (Colombia). She has saved me many times in the streets here from robbers, etc just by her presents and intimidating stature. Have had many dogs in my life, but a loss of a Doberman is like no other loss I have ever experienced. They have a bond that's impossible to explain. They want you near them 24 hours a day, (Velcro dog). Wish you many more years with your babies. Give them a kiss on the head every night before bed, because they deserve it.

Guess now I'm ready to start fresh on my new Dobie journey. I am getting her from a breeder (my friend) so I'm excited to see how this goes. In Germany, they are called Rhea Pinschers, which when translated, literally means Deer Terrier. They remind me of deer in their body structure and grace of movement. They are characteristically terrier in temperment. But you couldn't ask for a better dog. They are great with kids, as long as you teach your child to respect and love them. I like the idea that people are leery of them. I'm leery of people!

    My husband and I have our 2nd rescue Doberman together
    He grew up with a show dog Doberman. Since 1994 when we bought our house, we have had (usually 2 dogs at a time). A German shepherd mix and a Chesapeake bay retriever mix (both large adult dogs when adopted). Then a Rhodesian ridgeback/lab mix and a Doberman, both rescues. Buster was 6 years old when we adopted The Grimace (a 6 year old female black and tan Doberman). We named her The Grimace be cause she made funny faces. All of our dogs have been amazing!! All of our beloved angels lived to between 14 and 17 years of age. Our new rescue Doberman is Penny Lane...a red girl with cropped tail and floppy ears. She is now 3. She was 1 when we adopted her. A stray from Oklahoma city (we live in Minnesota), Penny was shy/fearful and somewhat aggressive...and only 48 pounds. She is now a well trained, confident, wonderful dog. Smartest dog I have ever trained. We will NEVER not have a Doberman. When we get old, we will adopt senior Dobermans. Gawd Dobermans are amazing!!! I love all breeds, but am definitely partial to Dobes.
    Oh, I'm not sure if this is with all breeds, BUT our female dogs are WAY more protective. 2 female Dobermans and our Chesapeake was a female as well. Gotta love a mama bear! Lol!

    Socialization is soo sooo important when they are young. We got our first one bc i grew up with them when i was younger and this was our biggest mistake. We have a really small family and didnt socialize him like we should of now at 6 1/2 months we are back peddling with training and trying to build his confidence bc he is skiddish and growls at strangers. Hes making progress though just wish we would have started as soon as we got him. Other than that he is the sweetest dog to us and is extremely smart and is picking up training quick. I love the breed just make sure you socialize, definitely learned my lesson.

    Coyotes can be a real threat to a dog. And coyotes often travel in a pack. No dog is a match for several coyotes. I hope your dogs stay safe.
