Many artists (if not all) always use playback and is rare to find a live vocal performance of them, but a playback from Queen and Freddie was a very rare thing to watch and hear, the full opposite of modern artists. This is kinda a jewel if you looked this way.
Probably by petition or requirement of the festival. He used to performed alive always he had no need for miming like most artist.

Forse i giovani (beati loro) non sanno di cosa sto parlando ma chi ha un po' di annetti come me va ben oltre lo stare male, ogni volta mi vien la nausea.
Condivido il parere su Mamhood anche se è comunque meglio degli altri tre sunnominati: lo hanno fatto vincere per dimostrare che gli italiani non sono razzisti (?!) ma c'era di molto meglio, per esempio la Berté aveva un pezzo stupendo e l'ha cantato col cuore.
Vivo a 20 km da Sanremo e ci sono andata solo per vedere I Queen: Freddie era pazzesco, riuscì a smuovere persino l'ingessato pubblico dell'Ariston (salvo le prime file, quelle dei VIP su invito: probabilmente erano troppo occupate a scandalizzarsi per via del suo look e dello stile).
Yes, it is weird but let me explain you some things: this was the "Sanremo festival", a popular Italian song contest, and Queen were there as international guests. The Sanremo festival exists from 1951 and Rai (italian national broadcast) still organizes it today every year. Unfortunately, during all 80's every artist (both competitors and guests) had to mime. At most competitors could sing live the main vocal line with a pre recorded backing track. And organizers couldn't do any exception for Queen. I don't know why organizers wanted this, since it is a musical program. Also, at that time there were other TV shows with a live orchestra and this festival was (and is still today) held at the "Ariston theater", which has a very good acoustic. The live orchestra was re introduced in 1990 and since that year, no competitor and most of the guest mimed anymore. Brian May returned to the Sanremo festival in 2012 for a duet with a competitor and he played live with the orchestra. All this explanation just to say that they mimed because these were the broadcast rules at that time. Remember that they mimed at "top of the pops" and Montreux, too. It's not because it was an Italian broadcast. Maybe they mocked because they were just listless that night, or because they had quarreled between themselves few moments before to go on stage

Rimarranno sempre quelli che si sono lasciati sfuggire l'occasione di avere Freddie Mercury cantare dal vivo, e dovranno essere ricordati sempre per questo, come un marchio indelebile.
In fondo meglio così, pena sarebbe crollato il soffitto di quelle quattro mura se Mercury avesse cantato dal vivo con la sua meravigliosa e potente voce.
Ragazzi, andiamoci piano se non sappiamo le cose. All'epoca era consuetudine esibirsi in playback in certe trasmissioni e non solo in Italia. Per capirci, 10 anni prima i Queen fecero lo stesso a Top of the Pops, a Londra.
Cantarono anche molto tempo prima in play, mi pare a top of the pops, magari hanno deciso loro così, anche perché al 99 % é l'artista che decide come cantare. Secondo voi ha deciso Baudo? Se così fosse, i Queen sarebbero delle mezze seghe, ma non credo proprio.
