My sister and her husband used to farm elk. The males had their antlers harvested while still in their velvet stage, for sale to asian countries, this meant that the males that weren't used for breeding had to have vasectomies, so the would continue to produce antlers. They also had to do regular T.B. tests, and other things, in addition to building special fences, corrals, etc.

My husband and I visited Banff and Jasper the year after he retired . The video doesn’t even do it justice ,it is just breathtaking ! We had our RV and stayed in the park campgrounds where we saw grizzle bears ,elk ,mountain goats ,mountain sheep . A pack of wolves chased some sort of wildlife through the campground in Jasper after dark ,we were warned not to go to far from our campsite after dark ! No worries we stayed inside !!! Living in Edmonton, Jasper is just a 3 hour drive for us. It is so great to see Tyler's reaction to this. My daughter got married in Jasper last year during the wildfires. She was married on an island at Patricia Lake. Jasper was suffering a series of blackouts during this time so when we went to the reception at one of the restaurants we were lucky that is still had power while the other side of the street was out. And then it happened, the power went out, right in the middle of the chef cooking our meals. He was using a gas stove so he completed cooking our meals in the dark with flashlights and we ate by candlelight. It was an experience we will never forget. Needless to say, we gave them then a handsome tip for all their efforts.

I just got back yesterday from working there doing railroad repairs. Saw a group of Big Horned Sheep grazing only a handful of feet away, lots of Elk, bears, Mountain Goats... even saw two wolves only a couple hundred feet down track trying to hunt a Big Horn. Lots of wildlife on top of the scenery. It's rare to go a day without seeing any animals at least grazing on the side of the road while driving. They quite often stand on the road and stop traffic.

They sure left off a lot. White water rafting is an experience that can be had whether you are experienced or not. My daughter and her family call Jasper home. She lives and works there and has taken me to such beautiful sites. The elk roam throughout the town. She said the the only time she fears them is when they are in rut. She took my sister and I on that gondola and to say the views took my breath away is an understatement. Just a note, if you take this tour, bring a jacket. The temperature is colder up there and that walk up the trail is not for the faint of heart. The elevation makes the air thinner and breathing a tad more difficult. There is a small cafe there too and that's where I sat and enjoyed the views.
I am from Northern Ontario and am very familiar with it's woodlands, lakes and wildlife but I was not prepared for the sheer majesty of the Rockies. The Athabaska River is a marvel. It is a pale grey-ish blue and has an almost mystical air about it. My daughter told me the colour comes from the silt from the glaciers. That place is magical! Oh, one more thing, that sweet little island they showed in the video is where my son-in-law proposed to my daughter.

This is really timely for me as I am currently planning a trip to Jasper in September. A couple of things if you are planning to go there. 1. Via Rail goes directly into the town of Jasper, so you don't have to worry about flying into Edmonton or Calgary and driving. 2. My cousin who has been to both Banff and Jasper said to definitely go to Jasper and avoid Banff. She said it is smaller, friendlier and more unique. 3. There is a tour where passengers (tourists) can ride in a sidecar of a motorcycle. The tours are 1 or 2 hours in length and goes to different places - depending on if one takes the 1 or 2 hour tour. Definitely a different type of tour. The animal you saw in the beginning of the video is an elk.

Great video as always. Lamb is not very common in Canada. It’s not unheard of, but most Canadians do not eat lamb. I believe it’s more common among Greek and Middle Eastern Canadians. Elk is also not very common to eat, and usually just eaten in high end restaurants in the parks, or from those who do their own hunting. Finally, Jasper is a great place to see the Northern Lights because it doesn’t have a ton of light pollution. That means you can see the Aurora dancing in all her splendour. You really should come. Seeing the mountains with their jagged rock in person is breath taking and Jasper even has glaciers that you can ride up the mountain on a massive vehicle and then walk out onto the glacier itself. Very cool experience.

Edmonton is about a 3 hour drive directly north of Calgary. It's approximately a 3.5 hour drive from Edmonton to Jasper.
Of the two parks, I prefer Banff.
I also say dinner, not supper. In my life as a Canadian, I've ecountered very few people that say "supper". To my ears it just sounds strange. Supper is very British, and I'm quite certain at one time the majority of Canadians used that term. It's also a regional thing. I remember living in Ontario many years ago, and recall people there saying supper more frequently.

I suggest Valley of the five for a great hike, and you can’t go to Jasper and not visit Jasper Park Lodge. Sit by the fire there and have a cocktail. It’s really a must. Also saw the most amazing Northern Lights while there. By far the best between Banff and Jasper.

Yes, glaciers 😅 I remember when I was much younger - about 45 years ago - my father was in a wheelchair and we had our usual 1 wk vacation and we'd go from Edmonton through Jasper, Banff and spend a week in Calgary visiting friends and family. While in Jasper, getting people to help us was never a problem. Getting that same help in Banff was impossible when they would see a person in a wheelchair. Things are much different now, thankfully. And yes, it's an elk and it's delicious. Jasper still retains that small town feel, even all these later ❤

Hi Tyler. In my 20s I worked at Jasper Park Lodge a 5 star hotel that was built over 100 years ago when the railroad was being put through. I can tell you for a fact that waking up to the beauty of this park never gets old. While we were there when there was snow on Whistler mountain we would take the tram up and go garbage bagging. That is when you pull a large garbage bag up to your armpits sit back and slid down the mountain. I don't think You are allowed to do this anymore but it sure was fun back then.

Edmontonian here, so Jasper National Park is 3.5 hours away, 4 hours to Jasper (the town). Maligne Lake is great to visit in summer, but especially fun in late winter or early spring (May), when you can walk out on the lake and look back at the shoreline, boat house, etc. The Sky Tram is great, and there's a basic café at the top where you can see Mount Robson in BC when the weather is clear.

Gosh that makes me homesick. I grew up right outside the park - so of course we were always in and around the park area. The lakes, the rivers, the campgrounds, the wildlife. All very familiar to me. It was, essentially, my playground. Unfortunately, we moved awhile back and I've never been back, but I remember still! Seeing it, even briefly like this makes me want to go back. Technically, we don't live THAT far away, we're just outside Calgary now, so it's a bit of a drive. (Banff is a good day trip now) But while we still have the wildlife, we lack the lakes and the ability to access almost any land we see.
Honestly, it's more touristy than they make out. It's got the TransCanada highway going right through town, right through the park, so there are still a LOT of tourists. I suppose it may have changed in the years since I've been there, but I can't imagine it's changed THAT much. Tourism is the whole economy of the town.

Banff is such a plastic shopping mall. It should be illegal to have a GAP store in the middle of a national park. The Cable car is scary af when leaving the lower station -- in 5 - 10 seconds think we had already ascended a good 150'-200'. The way up you can see down the bottom of clear, still mountain lakes. Couldn't believe that one could see fish a good 20-30' deep in the lakes at least. I need to visit it again. We North Americans are blessed with such spectacular natural beauty. Our two countries' national parks touch the hearts of men and inspire the creativity of writers (authors Pierre Berton "The National Dream" or Jack London and his book "Call of the Wild") and filmmakers (think the Dante's Peak). If I could be reborn onto earth a thousands times I'd probably always pick the Americas and most times out of that our beautiful, resplendent, rich, nurturing, biologically megadiverse continent. Where else does one see such a complete representation of Tundra, prairies, mediterranean climates & pretty much every other type climate on earth is seen somewhere here continent.
I'm beginning to see now why early American setlers anthropomorphized North America as the beautiful Colombia -- a virtuous and beautiful lady who nourishes all who inhabit her shores. Can't believe I'm getting teary eyed describing a continent. Jasper is such a splendid example of the immaculate beauty. ❤❤

Tourists, understand these are all HIGH altitude places, so the air is thinner, oxygen levels lower, and temperature is not going to be always warm.
For people who have lung issues, remember this.
The lakes are ICE fed, colder than you think. People have died from the shock, so don't just jump in. Boating is much safer.
Winter is quieter, skiing, heli-skiiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing are common in Jasper.
NEVER, EVER try to approach or feed the wildlife. This is NOT some version of a zoo or Disneyland. The animals will charge, attack.
Tops of the mountains are much colder, especially because of the winds. Bring a warm coat, sweaters won't keep you warm.
