- Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy:
Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 "Italian" (with Score)
Composed: 1831 - 1833
Conductor: Georg Solti
Orchestra: Chicago Symphony Orchestra
00:00 1. Allegro vivace (A major)
10:10 2. Andante con moto (D minor)
16:58 3. Con moto moderato (A major)
24:30 4. Saltarello: Presto (A minor)
The Italian Symphony was finished in Berlin on 13 March 1833, in response to an invitation for a symphony from the London (now Royal) Philharmonic Society; he conducted the first performance himself in London on 13 May 1833 at a London Philharmonic Society concert. The symphony's success, and Mendelssohn's popularity, influenced the course of British music for the rest of the century. The Germania Musical Society of Boston gave the first performance in the United States, on 1 November 1851, with Carl Bergmann conducting.
Mendelssohn himself, however, remained dissatisfied with the composition, which cost him, he said, some of the bitterest moments of his career; he revised it in 1834 and even planned to write alternative versions of the second, third, and fourth movements. He never published the symphony, and it appeared in print only in 1851; thus it is numbered as his "Symphony No. 4", even though it was in fact the third he composed. - Hudba
Memories of my last concert in college. Viola section, with my high school orchestra teacher in the audience.
Not much effort needed, right? FIrst position suffitient :D
lovely to listen to, hell to play for clarinetists.
As someone who knows nothing about playing the clarinet, what makes it difficult?
@@Xelvonar Really fast articulation. Some pretty awkward passages too if i remember correctly
@@francissadleir9805 in the 4th movement I guess
@@francissadleir9805 Between this and A Midsummer Night's Dream, I'm thinking Mendelssohn must have dated a clarinetist
I love the section at 7:44 where the cellos and violas take over the melody.
clapping between movements cant even compare to ads in the MIDDLE of a movement
I'm sorry. I have no control over the ads.
Some adds are for CZcams themselves. This symphony recording isn’t owned by the channel so they couldn’t make money even if they wanted to
@@symphony-7526 no i know it was just a joke hahah
The fact that I first heard this in a TwoSet Violin video. . . .
Lmao same
Same but for Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto
no wayyy lmao 🤣 that happened to me with all paganini caprices 😅
I heard it first on a barbie movie but I never knew the name of the piece until it appeared on a Twosetviolin video. So Barbie and Twosetviolin brought me here.
Modta Bird beuti nothing
This symphony, along with the Nutcracker Suite by Tschaikovsky was the only classical music Mom and Dad had-- which I discovered at the age of five. I played the grooves off that album. Next year, after he was transfered to the Air Force Academy, I felt emboldened to actually break the number one rule: Go straight home from school. I, instead, went to Ms. Ballentine's home (well-known piano teacher) and asked her to teach me. She said that she had NEVER had a child come to her before the parents. Although very young (not quite six) she took me on!
The counterpoint between the two flutes and octave violins at 10:54 is beautiful.
Thanks for putting in all the extra markings, key, speed, and everything. It was easy to find the section of my excerpt.
1st movement: 0:05 (0:23)
2nd movement: 10:11
3rd movement: 16:59 18:07 19:16 20:42 21:37
4th movement: 24:31
thank you for uploading!!!
The 1st Symphony I ever played as a kid. 27:04 was my favorite part. My teacher just thrust me into it and I had a ball
The 3rd movement phrasing is incredibly beautiful, unlike any other version ive heard.
Thanks for uploading!
All the movements of this symphony would make an incredible opera. Am I right? The first movement would be such a good overture.
I don’t think so. Btw, Felix never composed any operas (as far as I know but I’m pretty sure).
@@Dylonely42 Op. 10?
@@amerrylittlemonarch Surprise....Mendelssohn DID write an opera! Those early Mendelssohn works are so easily forgotten unfortunately.
My favorite story behind this is he threw this absolute masterpiece away when he finished it. Mendelssohn said it was the worst piece he has ever written.
Well if he threw it away how did it get out?
@@markpalavosvrahotes5575 It was published posthumously. He didn't throw it out - and was intending to revise it from what I understand, but he wasn't satisfied with it.
@@neiltheblaze He actually did revise it, and there is a recording of that version by sir Eliott Gardiner
The first time I heard this was in Classical Music Mashup IV.
Same.
Me in the Classical Music Mashup II
@@Dylonely42 Sry. I didn't notice until right now that the first movement was there.

The best part of the whole 1st movement: 5:14-6:50. Basically the development section

Simplemente jamás en mi vida me cansaré de repetirla y repetirla.
La primera que encontré solo cuando joven y sigue mi favorito!
Why is that first theme _SO_ catchy?
Ikr, it's also easy to memorise how it sounds in your head, and for myself i think I've been obsessed with this 1st theme lately. 💖👄💖
That's Mendelssohn, he's MISTER catchy theme!
@@RubykonCubes3668 its so hard to play tho XD and super long
This song triggers a nostalgic feeling…and yes you’e right about the catchy part. Its been stuck in my head for ten years
What a beauty 🎼😍
Everyone’s talking about the development in the 1st mvt but it’s 7:45-8:27 that really gives me a huge dopamine release. Such a rich, lyrical, romantic, sunny, mediterranean sound
A great piece of music!
My favourite Symphony of all! Before the 9 of Beethoven, the Symphonie Fantastique of Berlioz and the 9th of Dvorak!
Better'n New World? (you're kidding, right?)
It really sounds like italian

3rd Movement was the opening theme to New York's iconic WQXR radio "Breakfast Symphony" in the late 50's. Takes me right back.

That movement is such a satisfying work. I's so thrilling.
Though this composition begins in a major key but ends in the tonic minor, it's still a pretty interesting composition.

Is it just me, or does the fact that this Symphony begins in a major key and ends in the tonic minor foreshadow Mendelssohn's next symphony? That's because the first movement of the Reformation Symphony begins in D Major and ends in the tonic minor.
Perhaps
Man this song brings me extreme nostalgia…I remember when i was like 4? I watched a DVD known as Brainy Baby and this song played as the credits rolled. I know this song now because of the google song search thingy
Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses final battle scene lol
Barbie
I came to find a comment mentioning Barbie. I am not disappointed.
Excellent recording and performance! Only here woodwinds sound weak 29:26 . Maybe Mendelssohn forgot a second horn doubling the melody? Or to use more octaves for the melody? The score also misses to mark a F for the woodwinds. The Sf was not played, or not enough. This one of the climaxes of the piece, and the coda of the whole symphony.
私が高校時代、登校のために使っていた神戸電鉄という日本の神戸市にある鉄道の発車メロディがメンデルスゾーンが作曲した「イタリア」だと知ってから電車の中で「イタリア」を聴くようになりました。

8:57 Schumann's Piano Concerto Harmonies? Anyone?
Yeah I hear it, think it's a little shorter though.
It’s called a ‘circle of fifths’ progression, and is extremely popular. Probably the most important type of sequential treatment. You can find it everywhere in the 18th century especially.
The profoundness of Beethoven and the youthfulness of Mozart xD

Horrendous. This interrupts with ads every 3 minutes.
I swear to god I’m gonna go burn my music now
I much prefer the Reformation #5, which M was also critical of. The first movement of this sounds repetitive and the second bland and uninspired. The Reformation is so original and uncompromising! But hey, its just my opinion! 😅

Too rough and tumble.
Not the greatest version to say the least.
