    my family violin was originally made this way in 1903 . 3 generations one violin . I like the lack of weight of fine tuners on the tail piece makes a strong bright sound , I have had other violins none have the ease of tuning or stay in tune as well . fun to see it's not alone in the world .

      @RockStarOscarStern634 Před 3 lety +3

      These mechanical pegs bypass the need to have fine tuners on the Tailpiece. They actually look like flattened Pegs.

      Hi dean herbig the biggest advantage of these tuning keys is that unlike friction pegs, they're not made out of Ebony which is a rather endangered material, instead they're metal & plastic which is a material that's constantly being recycled.

    I’d added ukulele machine heads to my violin. Perfect length pegs. A little heavier than wooden, but worth the lack of frustration from slipped wooden pegs

    1:53 Machine Head Tuners are far more superior than those obsolete Friction Tuners cause they turn more smoothly plus you can eliminate fine tuners from the Tailpiece which will liven the sound up. The Headstock on this Violin is made out of Plastic & the friction Tuners don't work good in that material, but Machine Head Tuners do.

  • @RockStarOscarStern634
    @RockStarOscarStern634 Před 3 lety +1

    Wheel Nelson These machine head tuners are feather light weight which means it's not that heavy.

  • @deltafour1212

    I did this once. Worked great but made the scroll end to heavy. Switched to Wittner fine tuners. More expensive but OHHHHH so worth it.

  • @RockStarOscarStern634
    @RockStarOscarStern634 Před 3 lety +2

    The Original Geared Tuning machines for Violin (Guitar style tuners) were Open Geared so they're not as heavy as you might think (as if they were closed gear).

      It reminds me of those 18th or 19th century Guitar Style Tuning Keys on a Violin, & that idea is catching on again because they're far more superior than friction pegs.

    It kinda looks like the Violins from a Hupfeld Phonolist Violina w/ Geared Tuners.

  • @RockStarOscarStern634
    @RockStarOscarStern634 Před 3 lety +3

    If you parents buy your kids a Violin, Viola, or Cello I reccomend replacing the friction pegs w/ Geared tuners as well as removing the fine tuners from the Tailpiece because not only will tuning it be easier, it'll vibrate more freely.

    A friend of mine named Marijke Ras made a Steampunk Violin & because there's a crack near the hole of the 2nd String Tuning Peg, she went w/ Geared Tuners (Ukulele Machine Heads) which act as pegs w/ built in fine tuners that never slip. Funny thing Double Basses always come w/ these Machine heads & lots of companies call these Tuning keys "Easy Tune machine heads".

  • @RockStarOscarStern634
    @RockStarOscarStern634 Před 3 lety +1

    The Violins in the Hupfeld Phonolist Violina have Geared tuners too so that helps with tuning.

  • @RockStarOscarStern634
    @RockStarOscarStern634 Před 3 lety +1

    Weather you're a beginner or expert I recommend getting machine head tuners installed on your Violin because tuning will be alot simpler plus you won't need fine tuners anymore. The original tuning machines for Violin are Open geared (not closed gear) so they're not that heavy.

  • @RockStarOscarStern634
    @RockStarOscarStern634 Před 3 lety +1

    Wheel Nelson What brand of Violin is this in the Video? The Machine Heads are a big improvement over the Friction Pegs cause 1) they stay put, & 2) they're basically pegs & fine tuners in 1 piece meaning you can get rid of the fine tuners from the Tailpiece & allow the instrument to vibrate more freely.

  • @RockStarOscarStern634
    @RockStarOscarStern634 Před 3 lety +1

    The Machine Head tuners not only look great, but they work great too. They should phase out all the friction pegs & fine tuners, & just stick to using the fresh new Guitar style tuning machines. Compared to the Perfection pegs, these ones are more functional because you can use a string winder to crank them for easier string change.

    The other cool thing about Geared Tuners is that they're not made out of Ebony (or any common wood used for these pegs) cause it's an endangered material. These Tuners are more Eco friendly cause they're made out of Recycled Metal & plastic, plus they enhance the instrument sound by putting the strings at a little bit sharper angle.

      Mechanical tuners seem like a good update plus they look more modern. Interestingly for Baroque Violin they now make Synthetic Strings as a replacement for Gut Strings.

    • @RockStarOscarStern634
      @RockStarOscarStern634 Před 3 lety +1

      dean herbig those are Guitar Style Violin Tuning Keys which act as Pegs & Fine tuners all in one device. The idea of using Guitar Style Tuners on a Violin, Viola, or Cello is starting to catch on because of how much easier they turn.

      @OscarStern723 I recommend real gut strings, however.
      I put gut on my classical guitar... the sound is both darker, louder and has more organic overtones.
      I'm building a talharpa and I'm glad to see that ordering guitar tuners was the right call.
