  • Thank you guys for tuning in and watching this short install video of how to possibly achieve a louder turbo sound haha whether it works or not is your judgment, personally I think it made the exhaust not a little bit more raspy. Who knows, more videos coming soon thanks again for watching and make sure to subscribe if you haven't already I'd really appreciate it! Have a good one!

    I have tested this with and without the resonator box on the intake several times over 12 years of owning my lbz. If you think about how a turbo works, there is no way removing this can effect the exhaust sound(not enough to notice anyway). The intake side (compressor wheel) is on the intake side and it gets its power to spin from the exhaust side of the turbo via the turbo shaft, other than that, they are totally separate. My conclusion after trying this multiple times over the years is that the resonator was designed to either reduce audible turbo intake sound or increase it. I'm almost convinced that when you remove the resonator box the perceived turbo whine (in the cab) is reduced. You would be surprised at how much money and engineers manufactures will throw at what the driver hears when driving. I believe the original ford mustang gt 5.0 liter spent some kind of record amount on acoustical engineers to perfect the exhaust note on that car...which even today, is still one of the most talked about and copied exhaust notes. Thanks for your video. Try listening to what you hear in the cab while driving (with and without the resonator) and let me know your thoughts on this. You're younger and probably have better hearing than me lol

    Think of this! The sound comes from the turbo so the only way that sound can get outside is through the inlet which is your air box or the outlet which is your exhaust. You can cut out the muffler to make it louder because a Duramax is known for being quiet anyway but this will not give turbo whistle. This turbo is not make to do that. You would have to install a turbo from Ryan’s Diesel Service with a 9 or 10 blade wheel to get that sound. Both of them sound great and the do sound just slightly different than each other. On a stock motor you would go with a 64mm turbo

    • @zachmerrittmusic
      @zachmerrittmusic  Před rokem +1

      That 9 blade sounds sooooo dirty I might accidentally buy it

    • @bransonred1
      @bransonred1 Před rokem

      I don't mean to be argumentative but the information you are providing is not accurate. The compressor and turbine both create the high pitch , jet engine sound that comes from pitched metal blades spinning really fast. Removing a muffler or straight piping the exhaust will absolutely increase the turbine sound out of the exhaust...and I mean, really increase it, even on a stock turbo. To test this, after you get rid of the kitty (LBZ) and or muffler, drive by a building or any hard structure on the passenger side, roll down your window and slightly accelerate and let off, your exhaust whistle will be very pronounced bouncing off that hard surface and it exactly what is heard if you were standing there and your truck drove by. You do NOT have to install any aftermarket turbo and it definitely does not have to be a Ryans turbo (though they are some of the best). A friend of mine straight piped his wifes VW turbo diesel that is bone stock and turned it out just past the drivers door. That little turbo whistles very loud, even at idle. Other than freeing up the exhaust, the next best thing you can do is change out the compressor wheel. There are many options to choose from and almost all of them will increase the turbo whine on the inlet side, some are designed specifically for that.
      Side note; we all love to hear those turbos whistle but if it is really loud and you drive your truck on long trips, it can get overbearing after a few hours of cruising. Don't ask me how I know this... After straight piping my LBZ, after about a year I installed a muffler. She still whistles and still has the stock turbo but it not annoying on long trips, especially when loaded.

    • @zackk695
      @zackk695 Před rokem

      @@bransonred1 ok I see that you actually agree. Read my post again. Cutting the muffler out will make it louder however the turbo whistle such as the one from Ryan’s diesel comes from the type of blades used. We agree that the sound comes from the inlet and outlet of the turbo and not through the steel but normal turbos only put out a very faint whistle. Look into turbos such as Ryan’s and others and even some performance diesels do not have a whistle sound to them. Ryan’s found that with a 9 or 10 blade uniquely shaped blade they were able to get a strong jet sound from the turbo without it affecting performance

    • @bransonred1
      @bransonred1 Před rokem +1

      @@zackk695 I agree and see where the confusion lies. We're talking about whistling from opposite ends. No harm-no foul. I'm very familiar with Ryan's turbos and you are correct, several of their impellers will really crank up the whistle on the intake side. But if you open, just the exhaust on a LBZ duramax by deleting the kitty especially and straight piping or at least a high flo muffler, it will whistle pretty loud. Granted, that is the whistle from the turbine side, but you will get much less turbo lag by removing all that resistance in the exhaust so that will increase out the exhaust even more. Adding even just a compressor wheel swap will add huge whistle on the intake side depending on which one you choose, so she'll be whistling out both ends much better. But for you young whipper snappers, trust me when I tell you to keep drivability in mind. If you drive your rig on long trips that whistling will make you regret your decision lol. Kind of like clapped out squatted trucks with straight pipes and blue tooth front axles, it may seem cool riding around town but that is where the fun ends. I have an open exhaust and I went back to my stock intake after my friend that tuned it gave me a lesson in why to never run those hi-flow air filters. I used to run one and he pulled my intake off and wiped his fingers on the inside on the tube and it was just black/gray crud. Those massive stock filters are probably one of the best filters on the market for a balance of flow and filtration, in my opinion.

      Whoever is telling you that has no idea what they're talking about. That is not even remotely accurate information. Now, that being said, a good custom tune can be a huge benefit and the VGT's can be controlled with the tune. I have EFILive with a 5 position switch hidden where the ash tray use to be. 1 is stock, 2 is economy which has the turbine vanes lay down flat at idle producing no boost and instead of turbine whistle coming out of the exhaust it more like blub, blub, blub...which I hate. The exhaust also smells a little rich when in this mode. 3 is performance mode which is right at +100hp and when driven correctly I get 19 mpg back and forth to work and 21 on the highway with one time hitting 22.2, hand calculated. 13 mpg towing 7k 8x21 enclosed toy hauler. 4 is heavy tow mode and 5 is extreme heavy (with turbo brake). A friend of mine that lives a few hours from me (who happens to be a certified Cummins tech, that owns several duramax's and no Cummins) is an authorized, licensed EFILive installer. I just haven't made my way back down to see him but when I do, he's going to change the tubine vane position on economy mode for me.

    Not a mod people
    If anything better before you removed it.
    those that think it’s louder it’s called “placebo effect “- your mind is telling your ears something that’s not true, blocking it blocks the acoustics that the resonator was producing - if any-
    Plus engine bay looks incomplete without it
    Just my 2cents
    Hope everyone has a great! 2022!

      She runs just fine now man, I reckon if any extra air was getting in would cause that but that resonator was apparently not even connected😂 so I’d say it’s running better now that it’s air tight haha thanks for watching!

    You wouldn’t have lost any power because the resonator wasn’t sitting on right, but it was probably sucking unfiltered air into your motor.

      It would cause a loss in power on a factory tune. If the intake air bypasses the MAF sensor then the ECM will only meter an appropriate amount of fuel for the volume of air that the sensor detects. This causes the engine to run lean. Most aftermarket tunes just command max fuel pressure and max injection duration so your airflow sensor won't matter too much.
